00:00 Hello Everyone!
Norway Chess is a 10-player round-robin featuring Top 5 stars Magnus Carlsen, Alireza Firouzja and Hikaru Nakamura taking place in Stavanger, Norway from 30 May to 9 June. Each of the 9 rounds consists of a classical game where a win is worth 2 points and a loss 0. If the players draw they play an Armageddon game, where the winner earns 1.5 points and the loser 1 point. No draw offers are allowed before move 30.
The 3+2 blitz opener takes place on Monday 29th and will give the winners the chance to pick their pairing numbers for the main event. The classical time control is 2 hours for all moves, with a 10-second increment per move only after move 40. For Armageddon White (the same player who had White in the classical game) has 10 minutes to Black's 7, with a 1-second increment from move 41. Black wins if the game ends in a draw. A tie for 1st place will be decided by two 3+2 blitz games followed, if necessary, by a 5 vs. 4-minute Armageddon game. Official website: norwaychess.no

Outside of that wonderful Olympiad, I hadn't seen much of Gukesh before this tournament. I'm a fan now for sure! He's now #13 in the World at the age of 17, a feat he shares with Carlsen and Firouzja. He's got fifty weeks to become the first player since Carlsen to make the Top 10 before his 18th birthday.

Rg6 The craziest part of this game is that Leela and Stockfish actually totally disagreed on the rating of the position starting from move 18; for the next 30 moves or so, Stockfish believed itself to be fine while Leela was progressively more and more assured of their win, and Leela punished Stockfish's blunder by creating the massive 6 pawn faceoff. Agadmator also didn't know of this discrepancy, and described Stockfish's blunder as if it were the most natural move in the world, which, well, it does seem very natural. Here, the faceoff occurs on ranks 4/5 and files e~g. Same ranks as in this game, but shifted towards the kingside. I'm curious what game you're thinking of if it isn't this one; this game is firmly embedded in my mind as one of my favorite engine games.

This is the Norway Chess Championship. Tari is Norway's second strongest player after the obvious. Norway is only a small country of 5 million people, so it's incredible they have a second GM who is rated around 2650. Even if there was no Magnus, Tari would still be a very strong player for such a small country.

@@pineapplesareyummy6352 Agreed, but this is getting out of hand now, isn't it? Sure there are bad tournaments for everyone, but at some point you've got to throw in the towel and acknowledge that some people are simply better than you, or maybe your preparation isn't on par with the others.

@@decreasing_entropy3003 But he can't throw in the towel, can he? There are 9 rounds. He has to play to the end no matter how badly he is playing. 🤣 One has to look at the strength of the playing field. Apart from Tari, everyone else started the tournament with a rating higher than 2730. Carlsen, Caruana, Firouzja and Nakamura are the world's top four players by live ratings, while Giri and So are #7 and #8. This means apart from the absence of Ding and Nepomniatchchi, six of the world's top 8 players making up the playing field of 10. This is an insanely strong field, practically as strong as (if not stronger than) a Candidates Tournament!

2:42 theres an important calculation with the pawn mass not mentioned here but was elaborated during live commentary. the point of c4 is cxd5 and if Qxd5 then Ne7+. if dxc4 to prevent this then d5 with the same idea. if the pawn isn't captured then the c6 knight turns into an outpost.

Prag & Nihal stuck around 2670-2680 for more than a year. Arjun is hovering between 2700 to 2730.

@@joshpinchuk7061 He's still playing, infact his FIDE ranking is only a point down from March. He's at 2690, I think Tari was the only sub 2700 player in this tournament, most likely invited as he's also Norwegian by citizenship

When you participate in a tournament where every other player is atleast 80 ELO points above you, such an outcome is bound to happen. But yeah, on a personal level, it would be quite painful to experience this.

This thing happens with the "Super-GMs" too. Remember how Kasparov struggled in that rapid and blitz tournament. You can't judge a person by a single tournament. In a game where apart from 10-20 top players, others do not get to play strong players so often, it's a good experience for him, even if he loses a bunch of games.
