I do agree that there is a huge mental component that needs to be tackled. I’m so used to running everyday that I don’t think I deserve extra food after working out.

Dr Roy is spot on. I’m 5’2”, older woman. Insulin resistant. An apple. In the past 5 yrs I’ve introduced weights 2-3 week & Med diet. Walking. Built muscle - lift decent weights for age. Great bone density. Reduced weight by about 3-5kg - BMI 26. Arms/legs/shoulders are defined. I look good. But I can’t loose belly fat/insulin resistance with my new muscle. There must be more to the story simply than muscle. Listening to Dr Roy I assume there is a tipping point of visceral fat or liver/pancreas fat that needs to be lost to flip the IR switch off and help my new muscle burn glucose more effectively. Loosing fat from legs and arms is simply not enough. Obviously a short apple has a lower personal fat threshold…..time to focus on waist measurement cause I’ve got the rest covered. My engine is large for my frame but still spluttering…..I’ve got 10cm to loose for my waist to be half the measurement of my height. Watch this space 🤣🤣. Thanks for the heads up !

Gonna have to just slowly reduce carbs and fat grams, whilst maintaining protein grams and fiber intake. Will have to start weighing your food if you aren’t already. I went from 110kg to 80kg at 191cm (6’3”) tall doing this.

Not just compensatory eating as a “ reward”, but in my case, my appetite is quite ramped up after exercise, even though I have been exercising for most of my life, I still find to be the case that I will eat more on the days I exercise.

They look like Jabra headphones. We use those at work. The speaker’s sound often came through crystal clear.

"Weight loss phase" is already the mistake. Should be fat loss phase, and looking at body comp vs weight. Unless obese, weight alone as a stand alone metric is why we have the problems we have. Until there's a hard focus on body comp vs weight, the metabolic issues, mobility, etc will continue. Why that continues to be ignored in the way it is, baffles me. Reduced cals, RT, adequate P = improved body comp/metabolic health. Weight loss for the sake of weight loss, is better than nothing to be sure, but is a crude way to approach it and somewhat self defeating.

I think one should still exercise during weight loss even if it causes compensatory eating, because if you exercise that prevents the damage that comes from metabolism slowing down related to weight loss. There was a study on that also, where they compared people that exercised and those that didn't and the exercise clearly mitigated the negative effects on metabolism that strarvation (weight loss) typically has.

I can't agree with guest. If optimal health is the goal, you need both a good diet to reach ideal weight and exercise rigorously.

This expert knows a ton about Diabetes but very little about obesity management and exercise. People do *not* automatically eat a compensatory pie after walking for 30 minutes.

I am actually a physician. while you will see a faster improvement in insulin sensitivity if applying rapid weight loss diet ( minimum saturated fat especially animal source, and only low glycemic load foods max 800 cal a day) with rigorous exercise the hunger will be extreme and you will get a compensatory eating unless the patient has extremely disciplined mind and behaviour. only apply exercise in a dietary approach to reverse diabetes if improvement in insulin sensitivity has to be pushed more to achieve at least below 200 mg/dl blood glucose without meds, because not all people will respond as fast as expected, and you still have to manage their cases and watch other indicators. so, this diet has to start first with minimum exercise.

Are you recommending rapid weight loss via extreme energy restriction? Not clear from your comment. It's never a long term route to permanent fat loss. @@saifalarabi4491

He didn't mean it literally. He chose pie to make a point. He is saying people increase appetite when increasing activity and then eat more.

@@keithbarbaro7590 no. When you are doing best in eliminating visceral fat by proper diet and achieve a daily amelioration on insulin resistance the hunger will be different when you exercise. The urge to eat will be strong and really hard to control.
