What is the Dybbuk ? Spirit Possession and Exorcism in the Kabbalah

ESOTERICA

3 жыл бұрын

The Kabbalah changed a great deal in Judaism including the conception of possession and exorcism. This episode of Esoterica explores the development of these concepts in rabbinical Judaism and the rise of Kabbalah, especially Lurianic Kabbalah in the 16th century. Here we discuss the idea of the Dybbuk - the evil dead returned to possess the living - but also the idea of Ibbur or beneficent spiritual pregnancy in which the soul of the righteous dead actually comes to dwell in the body of the kabbalist!

Dr. Justin Sledge I am your biggest fan, "They're getting mystically pregnant. The more you know!" made me laugh so hard. I am having the absolute time of my life watching your videos, I have ADHD so its so rare that anything can capture my attention for even 5 seconds let alone for 2 hours over the course of two videos! I'm hooked! Thank you so much for doing what you do!!

I'll never be righteous enough to perform a ritual to ask the Prince of the Torah to explain the deeper mysteries of Judaism to me instantly, but I can fall asleep with your playlists on and wake up able to follow your livestreamed discussions with other theologians. I'm putting that in the close enough column.

The Maya Cenote Sacred wells ..Cenotes had a symbolic use, as the ancient Maya regarded cenotes as one of the three symbolic entryways to Xibalba (shi-bal-bah), the Maya underworld. The other two entryways are caves and the ballcourt where the Maya ballgame was played. Because cenotes were viewed in this sacred way, the ancient Maya would throw offerings into these pools to communicate with gods and ancestors. interesting how common certain ideas transcend over distant cultures through would history..

Would it be possible to do something on the historical, spiritual and magickal beliefs and uses of stones, gems and especially crystals, across cultures, please? I’m always a bit suspicious about New Age beliefs on the properties of crystals as I have never been able to identify their sources. I know lapidary books go back to the 1600s and there are ancient Indian practices of wearing certain gems to mitigate karma. Aside from that, I can’t find anything. Also, my understanding is that Western Occult traditions view crystals more as containers for certain specific energies or even spirits while New Agers see them as something good just to have around. I wonder if by simply having them around they could result in unwanted effects. Lastly, in occultic terms, is salt considered a crystal? Is that why it can be blessed or ‘programmed’? Thank you

I got tripped out when I considered the cosmic political implications of these two concepts in tandem. There seems to be this situation where there are lower, shittier worlds one could be living in as well as higher, better worlds to aspire toward. Jewish history seems to span a whole range of attitudes toward denizens of these higher and lower worlds, but these attitudes do seem to fluctuate in sync with the political fortunes and misfortunes of various Jewish communities. At times of great persecution, there seems to be a focus on the denizens of lower worlds regarding their classification and pacification. At times of great opportunity, there seems to be more of a focus on attaining higher states beyond this cycle of reincarnation (I didn't quite get the spelling of that word in the video: gilgul?). It occurs to me that maybe denizens of higher worlds, in their own cosmic conflicts, may have varying attitudes toward us lower beings who are scrambling to attain status in their world just as dybbuks scrape and scramble to get up to our world. It would certainly be in keeping with the whole "as above so below" maxim if this were the case.

Yeah, I really wanted to mention some parallels but these two episodes just got a lot longer than I anticipated. If only these sources were a little more fleshed out we might have some idea where they are picking up these ideas, influences, etc. They seem to mention a lot of this stuff as if everyone would just know what they were talking about. Perhaps, they did. Further, this literature is often like over-hearing a conversation from the other room a thousand years too late.

"OK Boomer" = "Don't trust anyone over 30" Both statements are true, and both statements are false. Trouble is, you need experience to tell the difference. You also need wisdom.

I have a lot to say (basically my opinion as well as what I think rambam would have said on all this. Regarding the practice of dvekut (דבקות) in Safed: I dont know how common it is, and the opinions on the matter may varry, but I personally have seen people still do it. And not only in Safed. It seems like the only graves who dont get that "treatment" are people (rightous and not) who's explicitly asked not to do it in their graves (like rambam and rabbi ovadya yossef)

I have an ibbur that came into my life and she is a real joy to have around and she is not evil in any way. She (I guess a she) if you have never had a supernatural one you would certainly find her presense very amazing. I call her my poltergeist wife lol. And trust me despite not having visible form she has physical capabilities. And she even interacts with people in my life letting them know of her presense. And yeah while quite a shocking experience it's been pleasant and very real. So after looking up benevolent poltergeist I found the definition of ibbur. She is like the description. So now I am here trying to find out more about her what is or possibly is.

@@MrDalisclock The Coen brothers wanted to depict a brief vignette from Jewish folklore to set the tone of the rest of the film, but they couldn't find an appropriate one, so they made up their own.

@@Mark-zk7uj that really threw me for a loop when I first saw it and I wondered how it connected to the rest of the film. Learning more about Judaism helped me understand the reasoning for it being there l, but also the general theme of uncertainty that Larry faces.

wonder if the correlation to the "sexual sins" and the dybbuk is the madness that can be brought on by syphillis

Usually the dybbuk 'knows' the sexual sins of others though, honestly, in small communities like that, so does everyone else - the dybbuk just drops the dimes

I’m wondering if this is the same kind of practice now called “Grave Sucking”? I heard of it first when I was watching a former student speak of it being practiced by staff and students from Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry in Redding Calif. Are they just mixing Kabbalah with Christianity? They lay on the graves of well known Christians like C.S. Lewis, to receive their “mantle” or power to continue the dead persons ministry.
