I mean a gas car would have eaten at least half of the original tire life, too. Optimistically. 2-3 oil changes probably would have been free, but fuel cost would have been much higher. To me, nothing beats to comfort of re-fueling at home. Plus, no frequent service visits for oil change. EVs are mostly maintainance free. I’d like to spend my weekends with my family, don’t want to wait in dealership for service to be done. These are the biggest advantage of owning EV. I am saving of my time, that is very precious.

Hi I own an iD4, I ordered the pure version (£31000 new )with 18inch steel rims as they wanted £1800 for the alloys, it in October 2021 and Received it March 2022, I have done 5500 miles so far. My dealership said no vehicle service for 2 years and then it’s £100 ( yes I am English ) which I thought was good. I charge my car most of the time for free at our local supermarket. The only things I don’t like about the id4 is the lane assist and that there is no frunk. Cheers

I just wanted to let you know that I got 49k from my Alenza tires, 2022 Pro S RWD. It now has 53600 miles on it 17 months and loving it. I got the Perelli Scorpion Zeros AS Elec tires all 4 were 1100 dollars installed. They have been great. And actually less noise from them. Efficiency is the same.

Comparing with aftermarket tyres, the OE models are supposed to have less rolling resistance to compensate for significantly more mileage, which is the most important request by the EV car manufacturers. They can sacrifice emergency braking distance on wet surface, endurance and many other characteristics for it.

Mine had to be changed at 30k, but I hung out until 32k. I did the 30k in 12 months, so I have accepted as fact I have to change tyres each and every year. That’s a maintenance cost of about $1450/yr. My VW ID.4 Pro-S is saving me up to $6,000 a year in petrol, so all is good. I drive a lot, because I use the car for deliveries, and the company compensates me for 66 cents per mile (because it is still well over $5 a gallon here in CA), so that works out to be $20k per year. So I can figure the full maintenance is covered by my employer.

Yeah, not surprised to us either but it is something to consider for all EVs right now since most of them weigh a pretty penny. We did have a model 3 AWD that went 30k miles without having to change the tires so there is some variance here.

They've been great tires. I plan to put them on all four wheels once the front tires wear out again. It looks like they will easily last 35-45k miles or so on the back of our RWD ID4. Very happy with the purchase.

After a nail in the sidewall, I was told at the VW dealership that any replacement tire needed to be specifically rated for EVs, so replacing with a standard SUV tire was out of the question. Has anyone else heard about that?
@Blind_of_Colour2 жыл бұрын
You make a comment about not being able to rotate the tires from wheel to wheel which I think requires a little qualification. If your tires are a different size between front and back as with the ID. 4 then you cannot rotate front to back, but only side to side. If the treads on the tires are directional then tire rotation normally means rotating between front and back, but the tires themselves, even directional tread tires, are symmetrical from side to side, so if you take them off their wheels ( which are not symmetrical side to side), you can indeed move directional tread tires from one side of the car to the other, which will provide better tire life than only ever having the tire in one position on the car. If you live in a place with a snowy winter season as I do, and you have winter tires that you put on the car seasonally, and you have only one set of wheels, then you are periodically removing your tires from your wheels in any case, and there may be no extra cost for you to remove your tires from your wheels in order to rotate your tires.
@evhelphub2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this Neil! Oddly, the VW dealership wouldn't rotate the tires at all when I took it in 6 or so months ago for a checkup. With that in mind - I tried keeping the video as simple and straightforward as possible for the average person who may not have experience dealing with maintaining their tread life other than having a shop rotate the tires during an oil change visit or something of the sort. But you make great points which I think are helpful.

My 21 ID.4 had a sidewall blowout on the highway right at 5,000 lbs. No puncture or anything.. just blew a hole in the sidewall somehow. Was about 75 degrees outside doing about 70 mph... plenty of tread left. Also, most of the new vehicles I've bought in the last 6 years or so have needed new tires by 36,000 miles or less.
@evhelphub2 жыл бұрын
Yikes! Sorry to hear about the tire blowout, John. I agree, 36k miles on a tire, especially for an EV would be great. 20k miles is a bit early.

There isn't any particular reason that an EV would eat through tires much faster than an ICE. 15-20% more weight isn't enough to cause 50% faster degradation in tires. If you have accelerated tire wear it's probably due to not rotating the tires frequently enough, an alignment problem, a huge lead foot, under/overinflated tires, or the stock tires are just crap.
@evhelphub2 жыл бұрын
I think it's a combination of some of those. The stock tires aren't very good. The vehicle is heavy. The power/torque all goes through the rear axle and the tires can't be rotated front to back. There isn't a warranty on these tires, which I think explains a lot.
@0hypnotoad02 жыл бұрын
@@evhelphub after reading more I see the ID.4 also has a staggered tire setup and the tires can't be properly rotated, meaning those rear tires are doomed to get uneven wear and ultimately brick themselves really fast. I think one of the best investments you could make in the car would be getting four identical tires/rims so they can be rotated.
@joelbirch67562 жыл бұрын
@@0hypnotoad0 Might that potentially mess up MPH reporting?
@0hypnotoad02 жыл бұрын
@@joelbirch6756 it's not staggered in diameter, it's the tire width. Rear tires are wider. It's a very stupid tire layout, apparently the rims are the same size so once these stock tires get chewed through it'd be prudent to replace them with a set of tires with symmetrical widths, so that they can be rotated normally. Just being able to rotate them front to back would basically double the lifespan of the tires.
@michaelcummins59742 жыл бұрын
@@0hypnotoad0 are the rims the same width so that this is possible? If so, I would be inclined to agree that it's a good plan. If you have to replace wheels, you'll never make up that cost, and likely will screw up range to a greater cost than tire savings.

Thanks for this great series on the id4. My 2023 AWD pro S is due to come in the next month or two. A couple questions. The rear tires were worn out, and obviously with rwd in particular, rotating them front to back would have evened out wear a bit... But other than being inconvenient to do 2 services for 2 tires each instead of one for all 4, you're not really out any money... The fronts just would have worn faster to make up the difference. So the only thing that would really matter is, did they wear unevenly across the width of each tire, or one rear tire compared to the other rear? If not, the hassle of rotation is kind of a waste of time and money (if not a free service from dealer). Still worth doing while in for inspection etc anyway, but probably not as big of a deal as many make it out to be. Any further observations on the cc2's in the last month or so? Still seem like they're similar noise, range, etc? They're the tire I'm most interested in trying out next, but will be a while before I have to worry about that. Any AWD owners have any input about evenness of wear front to rear? I imagine they would be a little more even than the rwd...

Can’t rotate front to back, different sizes.
@michaelcummins59742 жыл бұрын
@@bradleyanderson4315 yes, I'm aware. There was discussion elsewhere about putting changing it so they are the same width so that you could rotate them front to back with directional tires. I was still thinking about that as I typed, but obviously what was in my head wasn't going to come through 🙂 I'm basically making the argument that unless they're wearing unevenly side to side or something, rotating makes them all wear together more evenly, but saves no money in the long run. Loses money if you're having to pay to do the rotations. So I probably wouldn't bother trying to change up the sizes to allow for rotation.

I didn't see any mention of the impact of tire pressure on tire life. In North America, the recommended pressure for the ID.4 is 44PSI. But this assumes a full load, which is 4 adults. In the forums, people have indicated that at half load, or 2 people, the pressure should be 38PSI and this can save tread. I had to get new tires on my 2021 AWD Pro S after 21,000 and am now running my tires at 40PSI. I just crossed the 30,000 mile mark and the tires still look very good. (I replaced the tires with the original equipment at the VW dealer and had to reduce the PSI from 44 to 40 because they wouldn't doing it.)

The tires are not the same for the ProS. The cost you share is very high and not what I experienced. the dealership does have a recommended tire, but they will put what you will buy on your car. That part is a bit misleading. Very few cars come out of the plant with the highest end tires, that has been a thing for decades to decrease cost,unless, like the ProS you , you opt for the wider tire. Why would you not do any maintenance on a new car that is new to the world as well. Don’t think you should promote that. Also, tire places off the warranty because that is what they do to get you to come back and hopes that you will do service their. That is just business.
@evhelphub2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this feedback. I do have a few comments. I called my two local VW dealers and they both explicitly stated they would not place a tire on the vehicle other than the OEM factory brand that they carried. They stated this was warranty related (the vehicle's warranty, not the tire). The cost for the OEM factory tires was almost identical to what I paid a third party shop for the tires I desired. The cost is available online (linked above) and pricing may slightly fluctuate but what I paid is essentially what is the cost to replace these tires if I bought OEM. Warranty comes from the tire, not the shop that installs it, unless you buy some type of warranty extension plan or a generic brand owned by a shop. If you buy the Michelin Crossclimate 2s from Pep Boys or discount tire, the warranty of 30k miles from Michelin is exactly the same. The warranty for the tires I purchased can be found here: www.michelinman.com/auto/tires/michelin-crossclimate2 I did note in the video that other tires may be provided to different trims and wheel sizes, as I have heard some getting Hankook or otherwise, so I understand where you are coming from there. Hopefully this context helps. I hope you are enjoying your ID4! Thanks for watching!

This tire issue relating to EVs is never mentioned on many of the car review channels. For me, this is a BIG omission when it comes to maintenance costs. I drive 500 miles weekly on ICE (requires 5 tanks per month @ $60-70 per tank, 300-350 gas bill). Even if I replaced tires yearly, theoretically after 5 months of free charging would cover the cost. So there may still be a cost benefit. But these channels should begin adding tire replacement schedule/costs to their reviews.

You only need oil changes every 10,000 miles in a gas VW. So no you wouldn't have 4 or 5 oil changes....you'd be on 2. So let's not exaggerate the EV savings especially when that EV cost you 10-15k more than a comparable gas SUV.
