It's not as cheap as people might think. The Camino businesses suffered during the pandemic, with several going out of business. Those that survived have also had to comply with restrictions which result in lower occupancy capacity. It's easing up a bit now, but those businesses trying to recover lost income have had no choice but to increase charges. In addition, the huge increase in energy bills and increases in inflation have taken their toll and it doesn't look like it's going to recover quickly. So, if you can afford it, splash the cash to help these people. If you can't, then you'll have to find a way to do it on the cheap, which is possible of course. I live in Madrid in Spain, so we understand how the economy is in Spain. The Camino in Spain is as much a tourist attraction as it is a pilgrimage, so naturally the people who make a living from the Camino have to cover their ever increasing costs and make a profit on top. If you want to save money, then walk longer each day and reduce overall time on the Camino. Where cooking facilities are available (they were forced to close during the pandemic), then consider getting together to make a shared meal. There is plenty of water on tap in most places, so saving can be had by not buying lots of drinks. You only need water to stay healthy. For example, treat yourself once a week, instead of every day! Having said all that, you also want to enjoy the experience too, so it's a question of balance. Personally, I would budget for 50€ a day. So if you do the Camino Francés in 34 days (which is the average), then that will require a budget of around 1,700€. This doesn't include travel costs to and from Spain or any other unforeseen costs such as having to buy new footwear or pay for the some hotel accommodation because all the albergues are full at some places. Don't walk with lots of cash on you. There are ATMs in most towns, but not villages, so plan where and when to withdraw cash. Many businesses on the Camino only accept cash, so you'll need it to have some on you - but not too much that you spend it on stuff you don't need.

50 euros per day?? :(
@markdonovan15402 жыл бұрын
@@bombastus4402 especially now, with all the price increases. Obviously, I'd try to keep it much lower, but I think that we should also spend a bit more than the minimum, if and when one can afford it, to help the many small Camino businesses that have suffered during the pandemic and reduced numbers of pilgrims and reduced capacity due to Covid measures.

To clarify some other aspects: * there are places where accommodation in on donation bases... responsible donation! *the same applies to food, there are places that offer breakfast and other meals for free... responsible donation! *if you stay on campings, that will be a much different price for sleeping 0-5e *I found some places that have pilgrims menu for 5 euros, shared with many people, but it wasn't a everyday event. How many campgrounds are available? Should I plan on bringing enough gear to camp if I need to?
@caminotellers2 жыл бұрын
@@wanderingontheway depending of the Camino you do... many albergues have camping spaces! Obviously they much more affordable then a beds as they would charge you maybe 3 euros or some even for free... if it's worth the hustle of carrying the camping gear, do it! I'm thinking of doing the Camino from France in July ! I know it's gonna be hot, but I Live in Spain so I somewhat know what to expect. Now I want to spend as little as possible, and I already have a pretty strict diet. My thought is to take a 2.5 kg bag of protein powder, and oats. I'll also take sachets of coffee, can fit loads of them in a bag. I'll simply eat oats and protein for brekky with a coffee. Then a protein shake and get something small for lunch, and just load up on water. I'll spend most on accommodation, but im good with the shared accommodation for like 10 euros. Does that sound too far out there

@caminotellers2 жыл бұрын
That’s something personal. In Spain, contrary to USA we don’t have an mandatory tips.. it’s a heathy practice to leave something that you can afford but if you don’t have any, don’t let it stop you to have your food or drinks. People know that if we are pilgrims and choose the “menu peregrino” just because of the low price, we won’t be leaving a big tip! For example, I could leave a tip for a dinner if eating out, but wouldn’t do it when having a coffee or sweet in a bar… when are you starting your Camino Jorge ?

Everything is possible. I walked my first camino portugues litoral at 2022 like a vegan. It was not easy, but we managed :). You have to plan better what and where you will eat. For exempel, check vegan restaurant (vegan eat no eggs) in bigger cityes. And if you will stay in small vilages, you have to buy something to eat in advance in supermarkets. Otherwise there will be not something to eat for you at all. Buen camino :)
