Today is about Skindred and how a TikTok "trend" supposedly revitalised their career and brought them into the "mainstream" this year. Achieving a number 2 in the charts is no easy feat though, so maybe I shouldn't be so cynical. What do you think?

I'm convinced part of the contract for bbc breakfast reporters is they must live in some kind of entirely beige bourgeois compound, where there's no risk of them coming into contact with any vaguely interesting cultural content. They react like this to anything and everything, apart from bland stuff that's self manufactured by the BBC. 😂

@@ZuzuTheLemonNo, no hope for BBC at all. As Naom Chomsky pointed out famously in '96, BBC tell folk what to think and are very limiting on what they consider facts or/& information. Mainstream, neoclassical voodoo economics is the stuff BBC is tasked to perpetuate - even when Bank of England was forced (back in '14) to tell some truth, that BBC et al refused to report! Notice how BBC has former Bankers as Chair!!!!

I was at my uncle's wedding in July. He's 53, a black British, long-dreaded DJ who loves Reggae and Metal and has DJ'd for 35 years. I said we should go see Skindred the next time they play cos they've been one of my most fave bands since I first saw them in 2003. He didn't have a clue who I was talking about. How abyssmally sad is that, when someone who plays reggae and metal for a living, and is British, doesn't know them? So I'm glad they're getting a little more exposure - though I'm not sure Morning TV is the best place for them... They need to soundtrack a Christmas ad :D

I came across Skindred for the first time at Beautiful Days this year. They had stepped in at very short notice when the Proclaimers had to cancel. They were nothing short of amazing! Really entertaining, great showmanship, great musicianship and a great sense of humour! They're one of mine and my son's favourite bands (that list topped by the Darkness, obviously!). He was 11 when we went to Maid of Stone over the summer and they did a signing. They couldn't have been nicer to him! I could barely speak I was so star-struck! Just great. Then we got to the barrier and he did his first Newport Helicopter! He couldn't have been happier that day. Smile has been on repeat ever since. Over the years, I've introduced loads of my friends to them (since a friend introduced me to them back in 2010?) and I haven't had anyone that's seen them live not come away loving them (ok, there was somebody at Download this year, but she was just upset that 5FDP had cancelled). I've always felt they should be higher up the bill than they usually are (mid to late afternoon) so a 2nd stage headline was well deserved in my eyes.

Saw them about 5 years ago at a small rock festival in Wales. It was late, wet and for some reason most of the crowd had gone to bed, leaving Skindred with around 200 people max to perform for - yet they absolutely kicked ass. If you can go from performing in front of tens of thousands at Download and bring that same energy wherever you go, you're a great band imo.

Seen them at DL numerous times with an audience of thousands, and then saw them at the local rock pub too, in a packed little room, with about 300 people. Both iterations are always amazing and they put 100% into it. That's one of the reasons they're so loved in the UK metal scene. The music is great, the performance is always amazing, the guys are normal and so down to earth you'll usually find them wandering around after a show.

Benji has a voice and-a-half! I've not heard of Skindred before today, but I will be checking them out. Their name is a nice portmanteau. So thanks, Justin. I think it's great that they're having a resurgence, and the way they attract a multi-generational crowd is cool. It's an interesting mix of two or three genres. Really solid musicianship, too. Aftershock is terrible. It's viscous. It's a powerful gastro-intestinal and hangover producing emetic. I may have some experience here. When I think of Aftershock, I think of prison, resisting arrest charges and getting tased. When I think of resisting arrest charges and getting tased, I'm pretty sure I know that Aftershock's flavor profile is most likely based on the taste of the floors there.

I don't know how success is measured these days, but I think things have changed so much that there's no relevance to "charts" and radio. You can be a massive success online and make a hell of a lot of money from a great audience, while never having a label and never being played on the radio. You can tour and fill venues in the same way. I'm not sure democratization is the right word, maybe we're just evolving past the gatekeepers and slowly switching to a new model that's more organic and dare I say more wholesome.

I hadn't heard of Skindred until a year or two ago when their song with Jacoby Shaddix (of Papa Roach) was played on a music reaction stream. It's not for me but their blend of styles is very interesting. I guess I must have missed when they trended on TikTok earlier this year but I have been hearing of them quite a lot lately; Benji was also on Never Mind the Buzzcocks recently.

I hadn't listened them but as you've said i haven't been in any metal festival in UK in the last 20 years 😂 It sounds very cool!

I have no *cough* skin in this game. But these fellas are on it and if younger people are enjoying their music on TikTok then great. Thanks Justin for The Wildhearts mention 👍🏼

There's another band from that era who are very similar with extremely crunching riffs and very well-produced called hed pe. Really slick thick wide sound. Drummer slaps hard.

I had an Earache comp CD with Dub War's song Strike it. and was like wtf is this!!? Upright Jazz bass, reggae, and hardcore/punk. Benji's full on jazz scat section was epic. And when my friend Played me Skindred's first album, i was in.

It's quite an odd feeling seeing young people discovering the music of my youth, and even more odd seeing the music being appreciated in the form of Tik Toks. I'm torn between being flattered and feeling like a grumpy old man that feels like the youth of today are "doing it wrong" lol. I mean, in my day metal wasn't something you danced to, it was something you moshed to

A couple of years back my daughter came to me, raving about a 'new band' she and her friends had discovered. It was My Chemical Romance. A 'new band' I out my MCR CDs and said they aren't new 🫣

The offspring in my family had the audacity to try to educate us older ones about some music; simply put I wasn't having any of it, lol. I felt old then, dude; you can't educate me on music from my youth :) haha. I love it though how they're invested in music we grew up listening to :) It keeps me hopeful for our next generations :)

Probably because it's cringey. It's not appreciation, it's a clip that they'll dance to until the next clip comes along. I hate TikTok, I can't help it, it just grates.

My take is that TikTok reflects the latest generation's rediscovery of the past in the same way the internet of the 00s enabled milennials to rediscover the past. And you had the same stuff back then with people downloading albums but the older generation reacted by fetishising vinyl as if to say "what you're downloading isn't the **real** music". TikTok dances are cringe, but so was Guitar Hero and shit like that. The thing that makes it sad and disorienting is that in each generation something is lost and new things are added that distort the meaning of the original. Everything just moves on and on.

am totally with you there, I think a lot of the TikTok fans are gonna be in shock when they come to a Skindred show given how rough their pits are. I can't help but feel like it's a bit insulting to the band and fans who have supported them since the beginning when BBC and other websites are almost implying their success is now because of or owed to suddenly blowing up on TikTok and not the hard work they've put in over the years or their dedicated fans

Loved this, and I actually liked the song, so thanks for that. 😊 plus the joke made me smile, maybe more of a gender based thing, or was it a time when 'we' didn't mention stuff like that?! ❤

SKINDRED along with The Darkness are just the perfect festival bands. Seen both close to 20 times each now and never put on a bad show.

For real, haven’t seen either THAT many times but they have been on the bill of some festivals I’ve attended. BOTH bands are at their best when they play live. The crowds fucking LOVED them. People who never heard of them were going wild. Some band don’t just wail live but in the party/festival/ wild crowd environment, they murder!!! Cool you’ve witnessed them both! 🎉🎉🎉 4
