Thing is the movie which are made to highlight issues of women are shown to wrong people aka people who are doing it won't change or they won't watch these movies so its basically talking to wall scenario and people who know these issues will watch these movies and won't do such thing with their partners. In this entire scenario story telling plays the important role NH-10, Mary Kom, English Vinglish are woman lead movies and they did well because the issues are not shoved down your throat but are presented in a good way. Most female lead movies which are trash basically tell about glorification of cheating and how all men are trash and its absolute sexism and irony in all this is that for what women in india hated men they themselves are becoming that and such movies are trying to white wash or have some sympathies. the thing is catering women is more than just showing sex or sexualizing someone. yes it is fun to watch but it is not all we want. women can have trauma and societal issues and battle their demons while falling in love and having fun and making friends or cracking jokes. women don't always have to be "strong and powerful" sometimes letting them feel and break down AND then getting back up is more powerful rather than just having a character who is strong from the beginning solely because she was hurt by a man or is just strong for no reason

Honestly we don't need female centric films, why can't we just have normal females portrayed like normal human beings. Movies like Jawan, Drishyam, Uri have shown female characters that don't feel like they are just shown for empowerment but not for male gaze too, they're also important for the plot and behave like normal human beings. Hollywood has plenty of examples like Trinity from Matrix, Black Widow from MCU, Kim from Better Call Saul... Edit: The whole point is that females also need to be treated like a normal character in a film.

26:13 i'mma say something controversial: Animal in terms of writing could have done a lot with catering to the woman side of things IF IT JUST HAD TENDERNESS. I feel the character of Geetanjali was really well written but the directing was entirely male-centric. Geetanjali's story is about having her childhood love rekindled, her realising she wants to choose her fantasy partner over the stable arranged guy, having a wild life with her lover, settling down, supporting him through tough times and finally leaving and learning to respect herself when she finds out she was cheated on. However, instead of tender moments or conversation on flights etc we really see this tale DIRECTED from a male gaze. It ruined the movie. I would maybe say Heeramandi but that is not relatable to those outside of the incrst-circle of SoBo south Delhi. I really liked Super Deluxe tho, it had some pretty good female stories.

I feel the problem with female lead films is that they don’t show a protagonist who happens to be a female. They always have to insert some sort of a social message when there is a female protagonist in Bollywood. Though OTT is changing that, but with most female centric films, either it is solely about women becoming army officers, sports persons or politicians who are well respected, highly moralistic and can do everything good or show films that make women indulge in casual sex, drinking, smoking, and abusing. Many films like Queen and English Vinglish somehow try to portray that white men or western culture is superior to Indian culture, and if women go and live in the west then they will be more ‘empowered’. We rarely get to see a protagonist with human flaws who happens to be a woman. Female lead stories are always into extremes, either indulge in pseudo feminism or become the ideal Bharatiya Nari who was ‘good’ because she became an army officer or a cricketer

Women are so much more than the issues we face. I wish filmmakers would make movies about a regular girl/woman trying to build a career, entrance exams, falling in love, journey towards motherhood, managing finances, etc., or accomplishing a huge feat, being an action star. The best films in this regard are Raazi, Mardaani & Kahaani, Jab We Met. I want the “female-centric film” label to be deleted from our lexicon. I want films with good female characters. She could be doing something super human while also being someone with an interesting personality. In “Raazi”, Sehmat is written with so many traits. She’s loving, scared but also brave, compassionate but also ruthless, a girl who falls in love but has an immense sense of duty. She felt so real even though was doing espionage which is not relatable to 99% of the population.
