I have asked the distance question several times including the Nazi on this channel who would not even respond to a personal email. That said I am going across I-70 this summer and my wife and I will be in two separate cars. I-70 is straight for 2000+ miles so for the most part line of sight. I was just hoping I could talk 10-15 if we got separated. No one in the radio world has ever talked between two autos on the interstate for they can't answer the question. I have had some say 1-2 miles. If I am going to spend $1,000 on two Wouxun 50 watt 1000's and can only get 1-2 miles , guess what? Yep I will use my cell. But I bet I can get a lot farther even in crappy weather. So I am going to make the purchase and test it. I will post the results to this website!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The nazi on this channel cant answer every question emailed to him nor is he your personal question-answering resource. However, the nazi on this channel has gone out of his way to create a "ask Randy" webpage, with a link to that page on EVERY video, where anyone can ask a question, and it might get answered in a video. If you dont like that, then figure it out yourself, just like the nazi on this channel had to do.

Dude doesn't know I-70 too well. Literally, where I-70 starts, at I-15, in Utah..... you are in mountains clear to about Denver. Even then, it's roly-poly to about 60 miles into Kansas. Then, it's pretty flat until Missouri. I, personally, have made this trip in caravan with several cars. CB turned out to be best but cellphones were still hard to beat. Nothing works in the Rockies reliably, except a satellite phone. Most towns do have local cell service. Heck, even a few rest areas have a tower. IMHO, I-80 is a better drive.

Dear Don, Could it be that your wife is trying to get as far as away from you as possible and this is the real reason why you would need a radio to TX/RX 10-15 miles on your drive? Don't waste your time buying $1000 radio to TX/RX 10-15 miles.... just learn NOT to be an idiot to your wife and she might just stick closer to you on the drive.

I just got my GMRS license & ordered a couple handhelds. I plan to hook up a mobile one eventually. Honestly I'd just love to be able to talk to family that is about 15/20 miles away. Mostly highway. We unfortunately don't have a single repeater in our area & live in an apartment so not able to actually set up a repeater myself. But looking forward to trying out the distance.

I don’t know about this for a repeater, but I did attach my N9TAX J-Pole to my DJI Mini and about 50 feet of coax so it was maybe 65 feet to the top of the antenna… I was able to get pretty good propagation on VHE & UHF HAM frequencies… this was before had my GMRS Lic. I am sure with a better drone that didn’t get pushed by the wind so easily, it would have been better… the antenna was anything but straight up/down.

I finally started looking at GMRS seriously when I was regularly was able to reach a repeater located 60 miles away, and held conversations with a friend that lived 20 miles past the repeater. And you are completely correct about altitude, I live at sea level, but can see Mt Rainier from my place and have regularly intercepted conversations of climbing parties using small portable HT’s on the mountain over 70 miles away.. great video as always!! Sad Ham, no HAM, Ham and cheese, we need to wake up. I have spent the last 20 years in contingency communications on various projects and the attitudes I see and some of the feedback need to change. My radios are set up for Marine Band, GRMS, FRS, Ham and a few others. This allows me to work across all the frequencies if I need to. This is not directed at HAM’s, it is directed at EVERYONE. Wake up! In a critical situation we all need to be able to communicate on every frequency that is available. Lose the attitude and start working toward a common goal of total communications. Hams are not better neither are the GRMS operators. Why we at odds? Lose the attitudes start looking for ways to start work together, because they may be a time when we may all have to get through a crisis.

I installed my radio (Midland MX-275) in my truck about a week ago and was listening to conversation between a couple of guys in a city about 40-45 miles (straight line) away. The repeater was in the same city on a hill, (they mentioned the neighborhood it was located) one of them was on a handheld because, first he said he was and second he was walking a bike path. There was static and only a couple of bars but I could fully understand them. I was on a elevated ridge, not in the valley. I was impressed.

I paid extra so my watts are bigger than other radio's watts. ;-) Seriously though, according to an online horizon distance calculator, to extend your visible horizon out past 69 miles only takes about a 4000 ft relative elevation gain. It is very believable that the repeater would be at least that far above the surrounding landscape.

There’s a form of propagation called tropospheric ducting prevalent in the VHF/UHF spectrum that can cause signals to bend over the horizon. It’s not present all the time. It doesn’t occur frequently in California but does occur more often in the eastern half of the US. A tropospheric ducting opening could allow GMRS signals to extend beyond line of sight. Again it doesn’t happen that often but can occur. How do I know this? I’m a glad ham checking in. You can check with your friend at Ham Radio Crash Course to verify this. You two have done at least joint video together.

"Happy HAM" here. I only point that out cause we do exist and talk to each other but hate the Sad HAMs too. Being such I have used radios in the KHz range - GHz and you are spot on. This actually goes for all of them WITHOUT skip. If you can see it, you can talk to it. I will point out that your "see it" is a great rule of thumb for lower wattage and higher freqs. If you are on a mountain on say 2 meter (144ish MHz) really the only thing that stops you talking to Mars is getting out of the atmosphere and that there isn't anyone there to receive you. Between two points on Earth that aren't blocked by a land features the only real problem is what is in the air between them be it humidity or interference. Hence why with 23w of power the Voyager probe was able to talk to use from beyond our solar system! 23w of power, line of sight, with NO weather conditions is enough to make contact 12 billion miles away! So regardless of what the dingleberries pop up and say, YES it is IS possible (under good, clear conditions) to talk across an entire state if you are both high enough. What is crazy is how the Happy HAMs seem to do this all the fuckin time but the Sad HAMs seem to never do it! I guess living in your mother's basement and never getting laid you entire life makes sad hams forget it happened 2 minutes after you sign off.

Well, you went and did it again. You aroused my nerdy juices 6:33 so I got out my fisher price calculator (actually a free space path loss calculator on the interwebs). The answer I got back after several 'assumptions' said two baofengs with stock antennas will talk 300 miles with NOTHING inbetween. (that's what 'free space' means) If you put Midland MXTA26 antennas at both ends then that theoretical distance goes up to 1200 miles. So, now the intriguing question becomes: Can we find two mountain tops within line of sight of each other 300 miles apart that are both accessable by jeep? Any question with both words 'mountain' and 'jeep' in it is an awesome question.

YOu should make one for VHF 2 meter, after all VHF is only line of sight too. So GMRS handheld, VS 2 meter Handheld. they both go the same as you just said GMRS.

Late to the game... can you repeat this video please? What was the middle thing? I need to convert digital video to analog audio through decelerating my fars in inverse proportion to principality of equality. So in short, I need more fars... aka cow bell. If you can hear the cow bell, you have enough fars. In fact, cow bells may be the next sad ham. The end.

We spoke at a distance of 107km (66.5 miles) in a straight line using two identical Baofeng GT-3TP handheld radio stations. No repeaters! Station no.1 was an altitude of 2544m and station no.2 was an altitude of 417m. It certainly works from an even greater distance because the sound quality was good.

It's not GMRS but it's on a nearby UHF frequency. Using a UV-5R I've listened to hams talking through the crossband repeater (2M up, 70cm down) on the ISS. I can see it - even without a telescope (at night when it's lit by sunlight anyway). And it's way higher than a mountain. That translates to several hundred miles worth of fars! But, alas, using a couple of Midland GMRS walkie talkies in a coastal town in Florida I've only gotten about 1-1/2 mile of fars through buildings and brush, and about 2 miles of fars around the Old Faithful area in Yellowstone thanks to the hills.

I just watched this and I love the way you answered this question. I use to have a few wireless stores and I was constantly explaining to people with complaints why their phone didn't ring or why they dropped a call, particularly when in a vehicle. It's amazing how some people thought these half watt phones at 850mhz should be able to connect all the time. Great Video.

If you can see the repeater, then you can use it to talk to everyone that can also see it.. since repeaters are usually on the tops of mountains, a lot of people can usually see them = many more fars.
