#shorts This is how far you fall in Portal 2, using a method that I think is a good middle ground between "lore accurate" and physically true.

Before commenting about acceleration, please watch the video linked at the bottom of the short, entitled "How Far Do You REALLY Fall in Portal 2?" Almost certainly, whatever you have to comment has already been commented 10,000 times and is also entirely incorrect. Original response: Well this certainly exploded. I really appreciate all of the positive feedback/support this video has gotten, it really means a lot to me and makes me super motivated to make more stuff. That's probably a really bad mindset to get into long term, but for now, it really feels nice and I am super thankful for everyone who has lent to that (mostly the wild KZbin algorithm lol) That said, I've been getting a lot of comments critiquing the methods used in this video, so I wanted to clear it up further: There is no "right" answer to this question. Any different way of looking at this problem will yield a completely different answer, and the designers never intended for this level of scrutiny in relation to real life physics. That said, I think you can determine, with reasonable certainty, a rough estimate of how far you were *supposed* to fall in this section of the game, simply because of the signs located on the elevator shaft wall, which is where some seem to have missed the point. As this is a fictional game, everything bends to what we are given in game, including the laws of physics. Using air resistance/terminal velocity, acceleration, etc entirely misses the point, and instead serves to answer "how far would you fall in real life if you fell for as long as Chell does?" not how far you *actually* fall in the game. We all accept the unreality of portals in this universe, there is no reason to not accept that gravity or other physics work differently here. The little math I did in the second half of the video uses these signs as a model for the players speed, deliberately ignoring all other physics to create an answer that is truthful to the ""lore"" of the game. Also, while it is true that I ignored the small part of the fall at the end, including the "last" sign (which is hidden behind a pipe) the amount of time you fall here is ultimately negligible considering the amount of rounding I did near the end. The extra distance is 125 meters, which when added to the rest of the fall, creates a final answer of 2,093 meters (effectively the same thing). Finally, a little piece of information I discovered while making this: The sign textures go up to 5,250 meters, far above the point we see in game. Maybe the fall was supposed to be longer, but was cut down before release?

Terminal velocity isn't really a serious topic here as it only applies because of friction from the air rubbing against you; something I doubt the devs put time into simulating lol. @@SantiagoAbud "Terminal velocity" is a specific term referring to the force of friction exerted by particles in a fluid on a free falling object that opposes the direction of motion. At a certain point, the frictional force becomes equal and opposite to the force of gravity, resulting in zero net acceleration. This scenario, however, is an example of just an arbitrary in-game velocity. From a technical standpoint, none of this involves terminal velocity. It's one of those terms that is a special case, and isn't used to simply mean "a velocity that is terminal". Like "displacement" vs "position": same premise, different application.

@@Encorous also I don't think a human and a potato would fall at the same speed
@Encorous2 жыл бұрын
@@mr.battlecats5512 If you're referring to when a human and a potato reach terminal velocity, then you'd be correct. Terminal velocity is all about the surface area of the bottom face of an object during a fall, which is represented by the object's drag coefficient. More surface area = less aerodynamic = more air resistance. But in principle, if two objects are being affected by an acceleration due to gravity, they will accelerate at the same rate. As long as neither object reaches terminal velocity, both the person and the potato will fall at relatively the same speed across the board. However, this gets messy when you factor in air resistance once again, as it's still in affect before terminal velocity. But whether or not it is effective is, once again, dependent on each object's drag coefficient - something I don't have memorized off the top of my head. There are many factors at play when it comes to a free falling object accelerating within an atmosphere. There are ways in which your observation is right, and others in which it is wrong. It guess it all depends on what motivated you to make the claim. Are you making an informed observation, or just generalizing? Stating that the two objects will not fall at the same rate could stem from the fact that you actually understand the physics concepts behind wind resistance, but this statement is also made by people who have a lack of understanding of how free fall works. I'm not judging you if you haven't studied the physics behind this, don't worry. I just don't want to validate your claim if it's based upon a misunderstanding.

That's only the part before we hit the planks, who knows for much longer we fell after that.

Or you could edit the map file in Hammer and really check. Valve hammer units are directly proportional to meters. The math in this video is, eh, not agreeable.
@cinnamonkittamon2 жыл бұрын
But are they proportional to the meters that are labeled?
@wasabithumbs62942 жыл бұрын
Assuming the meters in-game are accurate, and ignoring the fact that he completely disregards acceleration. He also makes some strange judgements, and skips the part of the fall in the wheatley betrayal level

The speed you’re falling doesn’t change you’re constantly going at terminal velocity.
@dogman154 ай бұрын
Fun fact: The Pit is actually divided into 11 separate segments that all woosh past you as you stay in one place. They're tall columns that blend seamlessly into one another with "area portals", while Potatos and the elevator car are animated to look like they're falling while being completely stationary.

31m/sec is around 110kph, about 50kph slower than a humans terminal velocity

If you paid attention in high school physics you’d remember that falling involves accelerating to terminal velocity during the first 14ish seconds

First seconds of the fall is the time when speed is less consistent than later in the fall.

I just fucking noticed that the lenght of the video equals the time you fall in this. Holy shit.

For context, that's about half the height of Mount Kilimanjaro, and about the same length as the Hollywood Walk of Fame. For the Brits: that's about 2.4 miles.
