@Rork310 Жыл бұрын
I tend to agree. Might be close with Nidoqueen. But time losses aside, While it makes sense to give a pokemon the benefit of the doubt if they struggled against Brock compared to something that struggled late game when it has all the options. The fact is the Nidos did struggle with Brock whereas Poliwhirl really didn't struggle at all. Even against the Elite 4 while the Nidos first tried other than the unfortunate Loreli luck I think Poliwhirl might have been more consistent. Outspeeds the Gengars. Champion battle went smoothly despite Sky Attack interupting setup and Gyrados taking 3 turns because of crits. Even the Gyrados misclick against Lance might actually have been the better strategy. Hyperbeam did less than half so unless it was a bad range tanking 2 hyperbeams should be fine to get the extra Amnesia as it outsped and one shot everything after the Gyrados.

The reason for the 1/256 glitch is because of the way the game checks accuracy. When you use an attack, it’ll roll a random number generator from 0-255, and if the number it lands on is less than the specific number (whatever the closest number to the percentage of the move accuracy, so the number would be 229/230 for a 90% accurate move), the move will hit. For 100% accurate moves, the number the RNG roll needs to be less than is 255, since it’s impossible to roll anything higher than that. However, since the RNG only counts a move as a hit if the number is less than 255, and not less than or equal to 255, if the RNG lands on 255, it’ll count as a miss. Hope this made sense lol

To be fair, Poliwhirl feels like one of the few middle stages that would actually have a plausible difference compared to its final and first stages. Most middle stages seem like they'll perform in a middle ground between their base and evolved forms. But like Jrose mentioned, Poliwhirl might actually perform better than Poliwrath. All of which means it's generally more entertaining to play and watch either fully evolved Pokemon, or unevolved ones.

Surprised too see Poliwhirl ranking below Nidoking, there's definitely an argument to be made for Nidoqueen being better but watching the run it really felt like Poliwhirl breezed through the run despite the mistakes that cost time like no Psychic for the ghosts, not going to Blayne before rival 5val and going back for Strength. Amnesia is just that good and he outsped the Gengars too! Earthquake was definitely the right call but I'm thinking maybe holding on to Psychic until after you defeat Lorelei so you can use it on her water types, and then teach EQ for Agatha, might have saved a little bit of time (and would have one shot Sabrina's Venomoth too)? Regardless, great run for Poliwhirl and I'm looking forward to see how it compares to Poliwrath when you release it Jrose! @JonathanChute Жыл бұрын
The accuracy bug is really simple. In binary you use powers of 2, so like 2, 4, 8, 16, etc. and 256 is 2 to the power of 8. So one of two things happens (I'd have to read to make sure). The first is a common mistake where it rolls a number between 1 and 256 and then runs a comparison "Rolled Number is less than 256" but in programming 256 is equal to 256 NOT less than. So the programmer would need to use "Rolled Number is less than or equal to 256". That is my first guess as to why the moves miss every now and then. The second possibility (and probably more likely) is that the range to hit is set from 0-255 instead of 1-256, but the generator rolls from 1-256 meaning that 246 is outside of the range and you'd never roll the 0 inside the range. Basically because accuracy and evasion can effect a 100% effective move, the pokemon always rolls to hit on the attack, but when the result of the roll is 256 (max roll) the check on whether it hits is wrong. Either because 256 is not less than 256 OR because 256 is greater than the range 0-255.

1/256 glitch is very easy to explain. For most attacks (not all of them), the game rolls a number between 0 and 2^8-1, or 255. Then the programming for 100% accuracy just says if the number is between 1 and 256, it's a hit, rather than 0-255 as it should have been.
@IndominousLink Жыл бұрын
The simple explanation For Gen 1 Miss is: because accuracy was calculated by a value being generated from 0 to 255, where if the number was less than 255, the move hit, and if it were equal to or greater than 255, it would miss. The only unaffected move was Swift, which skips the accuracy check completely. it was literally a programing oversight, they put an if

Poliwhirl should be on a list of pokemon if you ever redo runs, there were some suboptimal plays that cost Poliwhirl a good chunk of time, I could see it being competitive with the top mons if the run is played "Optimally" not to knock you for the mistakes you yourself pointed out.

You always say "you could argue this" in regards to the ranking/leader board, but I honestly think that the position you put it is almost always the correct one. Like you said, 5 minutes was taken due to the mistake, but then some get unfairly walled due to Brock and bad initial moves, so totally fair ranking again.
