Was pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to road trip a Cooper SE when we did a 700 mile trip. Just wish the SE had a charge limit for home charging since we don’t put many miles on it and almost never need to charge to 100%.

Great video the charts make things easy to see and makes sense to charge 10-80% on public charging stations. We have just picked up a Mini Cooper SE in the United Kingdom. We love it it’s so much fun to drive. Keep up the great work. Chris

I’m so happy you get to charge her for the vehicle. I know a lot of people really want smaller vehicle for the price. One thing you didn’t mention is if you can do multiple easy fast charging after another just to point out if there are or are not issues in case someone wants to try to take a road trip. I know this isn’t typically a road trip car and God love the person who tries to do it in this vehicle someone should have that information before hand. This sounds like a really great commuter car if you like the driving dynamics the user interface entry price and all the other specifics. I know you were just doing charging her butt in case someone is reading this and lives in a less temperate climate, they should know a large portion of that range may be lost to warming the battery in cold weather. I would probably make sure that my commute was around 30% of the total battery capacity. Also just a reminder to those people who want to buy this vehicle, for better battery health you don’t wanna charge up fully every night. He will probably only charge 80 or 90% so that should be factored in as well but on extra cold days I’m sure it would be all right to charge us extra if you are about to drive. Just don’t want to let the battery sit close to 100% for an extended period of time.

It’s ok to charge up to 100% if you don’t leave that battery at 100% for long.

We love our Mini. It’s a laugh riot to drive with excellent driving manners. Interior and build quality have no peer at the price-point. DC charging is brisk and linear. We have road tripped it - no big deal. Excellent warranty, maintenance is included for the first four years, and heck, even connectivity and SiriusXM are included. Bangin deal with the $7500 tax credit.

I really like seeing the new charts. The comparison between 0-100 and 10-80 charges is really interesting since it shows there's no benefit to pulling in at a lower state of charge. Nice work on the time-to-charge analysis! That's great information for prospective owners and to compare to other cars today and in the future.

I wish my Bolt had had that curve. I would still like to consider the Mini SE and the range is good for an errand running second car but I'm still suspicious of it's reliability and then the high BMW repair costs. Maybe once it has several years of history.

Hi I own a mini se 2023 and had different results depend on how it was drove and the temperature. I made a 2000 km trip (1242 miles) and I can say in temperature near 70f it was charging near 48kw/h until 80% but if it was hardly drove in high hills and hi temperatures it seem protecting the battery and slowing as slow as 35kh/h. Right after I drove in a better environment due to the sunset and less hills and 120 miles later on the same trip(2 hours later) it was back to the more normal charging speeds. My opinion is: depends on the conditions, it can show variable results. Best regards

At the price of DC fast charging, it would be better to to do the last 10% at Level 2 (max capacity car will take)

Well as far as price goes, I pay by the kWh here in NJ on the Electrify America network, so the charging speed doesn't affect the price.

A nice but normal 125A class charging curve. Even for that small capacity 125A can’t thermally stress the battery. BTW, it would have been nice to se a comparison to its cousin, the i3, as they allegedly share the same electric components.

Do you have a video on a 110v EV charger? When you were live on E For Electric earlier this week, I asked what EV would work for my situation. (I live in Manitowoc (Man-ih-tow-wahk) Wisconsin, and I have a 40 mile commute to work, somewhere between one and five times a week. I also have a 10 minute drive to church once or twice a week. A few times a year, I also drive from Manitowoc to Prairie Du Chien to visit family, about 225 miles each way. Madison is about halfway between, and I'm confident there are chargers somewhere in that city.) While you were in the livestream, I forgot to mention that I also rent a garage space in addition to my apartment. The garage space does have a 110v outlet; I'm not sure whether it's capable of 20 amps or only 10. So, if there's a reasonable EV out there that can slow charge from a 110v outlet, that would probably work for me just fine as my daily getting around vehicle.
@barryw94732 жыл бұрын
All EVs can charge at 120 V. Depending on how you drive and the efficiency of the car, you can expect from 3 to 5 miles of range gained per hour of charging at 120 V (assuming 12 amp EVSE). Other than your road trip, 120 V should suit your needs.

Hi Tom, like always another great video, one question in your experience you think the mini in the future will have a bigger battery? For me Is simply a no deal with that range. Thanks
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney2 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. Although I don't think it will be a huge improvement. The size of the car is a limiting factor. Maybe 150-170 miles is an attainable target. But with better fast charging, you could make that work in most cases, even for long distance driving.
@e-redj2 жыл бұрын
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney Hi, if we take the Ora Cat as a similar sized EV for comparison, you can see that 200mi is also possible for a car that size. The current Mini is a bit of a Frankenstein, old petrol Mini with some electric guts of the i3 placed as good as it gets.

The power creeping up is because the charge rate is capped by amps, not power. As the battery voltage increases with charge level, it will creep up until it hits the limit of 50kW.

Awesome stuff Tom. Can’t wait to see the battery degradation review on the old Model S. FWIW, I pay .1 cent per kWh home charging between 12 AM and 6 AM with demand pricing. During the day it can be .7-.10 cents per kWh. Still a lot less $$ than DC fast charging.
@randocrypto16782 жыл бұрын
Did you mean to type $.01 cents? Otherwise you’re saying the same thing as the $.10 figure bellow. 1 cent per kilowatt hour is simply ridiculous you’re lucky if that’s the case!

@alexnutcasio9362 жыл бұрын
@@randocrypto1678 yes, one cent, not .10. Off peak on demand meter, 12 AM - 6 AM . Average .07-.08 ( cents) during day, even on peak pricing. 90% of power from nuclear. Of course there’s delivery charges, but that’s the cost per kWh for just the electricity.

Fun fact, Level 2 charging is limited to 30 amps and 240V (7.4kW) meaning it would still take over 5 hours to charge at home. Who in their right mind would spend $34k for a 110 mile range EV when you can get over 2x the range and a lot more car for less than $10k more? If this cae was $20k sure, but $34k is ridiculous.

What were they thinking putting such a small battery with such a short range in the car?

The car is tiny, to begin with, they can't fit a huge battery in there. That said, it's not a dedicated platform that can accommodate a larger battery, that will come next.
