The problem is in the United States at least 56 mph is essentially a useless speed to test that. It certainly allows you to compare perhaps to other countries. But nobody drives 56 mph. I would prefer to see a highway test at a normal highway speed or do both tests ideally. Out here in Central Texas you better go 85 miles per hour or you're going to get run over. That changes the situation significantly.
@fabriziom4 жыл бұрын
@@kens97sto171 Bjorn does a 120kph test too (75mph). 85mph is usual here in France for example with our speed limit 80mph. I could get up to 150miles of range in winter at these speeds with my Model 3 SR+, which is great. Have to stop charging for 20min every 1h45. 55mph is anyhow a good average for a commuter car, which that Mini is.
@kens97sto1714 жыл бұрын
@@fabriziom Yeah I know the Bjorn does a high-speed test also. Although I tend to see more of the low speed test generally. my point with the mini is that it's not the best overall car for the general public. In the United States generally speaking people want a vehicle that can do everything including a long road trip. Which at this point you could obviously do on the east and west coast north and south as Out of Spec Motoring mentioned. But if you wanted to do cross-country trips east to west you're going to run into some difficulties at least for now. Most of the center of the country the charging stations are about 120 miles apart, and at higher speeds you probably won't make it in the mini. The car is very well priced I will say they got that right, it looks great and has some great features, But right now you can also buy a Chevrolet Bolt EV for even less $25k aprox. Because they are significantly discounted. To me that's the better overall commuter car it's about the same size but has much more interior room a better range and a decent charging curve also at least in the 2020 model.
@fabriziom4 жыл бұрын
@@kens97sto171 I agree that for US it may not be the best car that can do it all. I believe this car is a perfect fun to drive commuter, but not much more. It can do road trips but charging every hour is a bit cumbersome. Not for every day . The Bolt EV is a far more capable EV but it's not as fun to drive nor as good looking. So it's actually good news there's more choice in the 25-30k$ range !

By the way, a worthwhile purchase for ANY EV owner is a Level 2 extension cable that extends the reach of a level 2 J1772 connector. This is good for three purposes: 1 - If you park your car in the driveway but your charge box is inside the garage, or otherwise you need more length 2 - If you get to an EV charging spot and it has been ICE'd but there are spaces next to it 3 - If you're doing a range test and you miscalculate by a few feet... LOL Anyway, they cost about $150-$200 on amazon but might be worth investing in at some point down the road if you run into any of those scenarios. I've seen some that are around 30 feet long, which would help tremendously in a pinch. Could mean the difference between charging and not charging.

I’ve been a Land And Range Rover owner for the last 35 years bar 2018-2020 when I decided to have a wee change to a Mini Countryman PHEV. The Countryman departed replaced by a New Defender 110 D240 First Edition in June 2020 - today I have placed an order for a U.K. spec Mini Cooper SE Level3 to replace my virtually unused in the last 2 years 1996 Defender 90 TDi300. Have really enjoyed watching ALL your reviews and tests and my choice ended up being between Mini E, Renault Zoe or a used BMW i3s. My longest trips for an ev are about 60 miles round trip so even in the coldest Scottish winter the Mini should be able to cope without needing a recharge at destination, but even if it does it won’t take too long. The New Defender is well up to handling the off-road/4wheeling and long onroad trips with 600 miles range at highway speeds before it grinds to a halt! Only problem with the Mini E in U.K. is lead in time for a factory order - dealer has two build slots available for March 2022 build………….. sold his November 21 slot yesterday!

Good video of max range in ideal conditions. At 75 mph the range will be a lot lower. Then if you're in the winter , using the heat, it will be lower again. So overall for most ppl, the mini would be a great, fun to drive daily driver, or 2nd car. It's range is too limited for the above reasons to take on long road trips.

Kyle, Very worthwhile video. I get the 90kph criteria which could be a benchmark for a urban/city EV driving. But for a road trip EV , 90kph (in the US) is not useful. Last summer we were short on range on I-85 and I slowed down to 55mph (90kph) and I actually felt it was an unsafe speed. Cars we zooming by us and/or were crawling up our bummer, etc. I exited the interstate and took back roads to the supercharger. For repeatability of US roadtrips in a EV the speed limit would be a better benchmark for range tests. I do get that Europe is different and 90kph would be typical for a road trip outside of the Autobahn.

Kyle, I'm at a cross roads on my first EV. I test drove the Bolt, didn't like the seats, but fun driving it. I can't test a mini, none on the lots near me. I have driven the S of course and fun. My thoughts; I like the Mini SE, Smart ED and 500e's. Love the id4 but those prices I'm near Tesla's so I'd go Tesla for long range driver. I love cars and have/had many. The mini se at $30+ well close to id4 which has more range. I heard the 500e's drive better than a Smart, 500e cheaper used range close to Smart's. Out of these mentioned would do you prefer for a daily drive. Round trip to work is 40mls but.... my area can be blow zero and in the 90's. It will be parked outside so I know the cold kills range. Even at work it will be outside....So a new mini SE with so little range, seems over priced to me. Perhaps wait for them to be used off of leases. If you have time I would appreciate your comments. I think you need to get to 200 miles. That way, people can drive for two hours comfortably, then recharge. In my daily use I rarely ever drop below 50-60% even though I only charge it to 90% every night. Like I said, you guys feel like you need more range but I think it’s likely that you’d realize you don’t. Batteries are expensive, in order to be cheap the range might be what people need instead of what think they want. 100 miles or so is perfect for anyone unless they’re taking cross country trips regularly. Trust me, I used to be in the same boat as you guys until I bought a PHEV. Long range EVs were expensive at the time so I figured I’d wait until their prices came down, but I almost never used the engine in my PHEV with 40 miles or range so I ended up replacing it with a BEV with 100 miles of range, I couldn’t be happier.

I agree, but for me, an EV like this with a range of only 110 miles would only be good enough as a local runabout car for me, limited to the Wasatch Front area. Once you get below 100 miles, I wouldn't even trust the car to be able to leave Salt Lake County and have a high enough state of charge to be able to get me home without running out of power. Aging Wheels did a range test on a 2013 Wheego Life (named as such because it uses a lithium iron phosphate battery) and it claimed a range of 100 miles, with him getting about 85 or so; that was likely because he drove that Wheego Life as any normal sane person would in the middle of summer (air conditioner on at full blast in sport mode). At such a low range, I would begin to have trust issues even getting me to the nearest grocery store. In these insane times with COVID-19 going around, though, that would not be nearly as much of an issue with stay-at-home orders active in many jurisdictions. However, I come away from this video thoroughly impressed at this Mini Cooper SE's performance with an absolute maximum possible range of 132 miles against an EPA estimated 110 miles.

Great test! Really appreciate the effort to be accurate, include weather and wind info! Some stats info at the end of video would be nice also. Great job! Just to add my opinion. It has ok range if you have charger at home and do shorter trips! Expect way less range if you drive it on highway! Its actually cheaper to drive on gas with current prices! But, its cheaper to maintain and it has really nice power!(instant torque and no stupid gearbox) Also, expect less depreciation...With incentives, price is the same as ICE version!!! EPA estimate is not based on ideal conditions driving 90kmh!!!( for instance model 3 Sr+ does easily 250mi estimated Epa range at those speeds!!!). Its somewhat of a mix driving. This car is pretty bad(efficiency) at high speeds but its really decent in city driving...

Spark EV is fantastic for what it is. I’ve owned a 2015 for just over a year and put about 9000 miles on it in the Denver area. Below 45F, expect around 50 mi of range if using HVAC. With warmer weather 70+ miles is easily achievable. Even crazier, because the gear ratio is low at 3.87:1, it still gets over 5 mi/kWh at 60-70 mph. The torque is amazing and you can get wheel spin at 45 mph...but, GM’s traction control steps in hard when it does detect spin. I still need to instrument it, but I’m pretty sure it’s quicker to 60 than the 7.2s GM claims now that it’s on something better than the hockey pucks they called tires. The interior is pretty spartan...a big reason I have a MINI SE on order. I use the Spark as my daily driver and have other cars for long distance cruising. I’d originally bought it as a test to see if I enjoyed driving EV as it was so inexpensive...I paid around $8k out the door.

The crazy part is the cost of DC fast charging. $8.27 for 31kWh? That would cost me $3.41 at home. Really crazy comparing it to gasoline. I can fill up my Honda Clarity PHEV (7 gal tank) for a little over $7.50 with current prices and that would get me 300 miles in range.

Best Value for a EV is a Used Chevy Bolt with 15k miles on it for 20K, over twice the range and twice the charging speed and a lot more use able. Resale on a EV with under 200 miles let alone under 150 miles will be nothing after 2 years.

Don’t the older bolts only charge at 55kW? Plus it’s not a premium car. I agree the bolt is great and has way more range and space - but I would rather live with the MINI everyday than the bolt, a much nicer place to be.

Need more range driving range is too short. My be its ok if you live 5 or 10 mins from work. But most people drive 30 to 60 mins to work I know a guy who drive a hour and a half to and from work. When you get off work. You would have to go straight home to recharge. Better not make any stops. Any ev need at least a 400mi range in the US. No one wants to stop every few miles and have to wait 30min to a hour for gas, so why do think people want to wait to change a whole car up. 450mi should be for all ev vehicles. Everyone can not afford a 50 to 100,000 dollar vehicle. A mini is a neat little car, problem is your can not fit a family or more then two adults in it.

Let's be real, 56 mph (90 kph) is definitely NOT representative in real world usage in Europe or any country on this earth. No one drive this slow on highway. Teslabjorn intentionally chose 90 kph just to give EV the chance to meet the EPA and European WLTP exaggerated range rating. He also do 75 mph (120 kph) test on EV, which is much more representative on how people drive. Please do 75 mph on your next test.

I wish they’d go back to how the old R5x MINIs drove. The F54/55/56 never excited me and the styling is not very appealing, especially the oversized grille with its “fish mouth” and the rear taillights. I also hated the new instrument binnacle. The old center speedo was such a hallmark design trait for MINIs and they could still fit a larger infotainment screen inside of the speedo. If MINI offered a larger capacity battery pack based on newer chemistry it may have been something to consider. If MINI lives on to make 4th generation products maybe we will see bigger packs offered. I’m just not sure BMW is planning to invest more money into MINI’s survival.
@OutofSpecMotoring4 жыл бұрын
Totally disagree on going back - I’ve owned many R5x MINIs and the F chassis cars are a massive improvement. If they put a big battery and really good tech in this it would have been at least $50k and went only ~200-230 miles probably. Not worth it at that point. I love the price tag on this thing.

This is a BS range review. Who drives at 58mph? Stick with your opening assessment that this is a great CITY car. You also need to come clean and tell viewers that the battery and motor tech is based on he now ancient BMW i3. BMW have been suffering from some weird EV leadership crisis and so new EVs have not appeared after the ground-breaking i3. Nice lights do not make a great EV. My brother in law has a Mini-e and is constantly thwarted by the limited range as soon as he drives at 70mph on a motorway. Plenty of cheaper city EVs with better range than this. More honesty, please. Thanks.
