Cooling down a Ryzen 7000 chip is no easy topic. Cooling down a Ryzen 9 7900x is about as complicated as cooling down a nuclear reactor. But let's try to boil it down.

Hey, thanks for the video, it's exactly what I was looking for in making a decision for my 7900x. One question thought, why is there a difference between the top 2 coolers? Aren't they the same model + extra RGB lights on one of them? I'm looking to buy one of them, but the RGB part is throwing me off haha. I'm not really interested in the lights, but if it runs cooler, why not. :)

Or, A D15, a Peerless Assassin 120, etc. You really really do not have to spend a ton of money on an AIO. A 35 dollar PA120 will be fine for the vast majority of users. If you work in a naturally hot environment, and while in that environment regularly pump your CPU to its max for long durations, yes, get an AIO, but if the answer to one or all of those is "no", stop wasting money.

Great video as always. It's interesting, how difficult it will be for aircoolers to handle 13.gen. It's a bit harder to cool AMD 7xxx series, because of this chiplet design, maybe those aircooler will have better luck with Intel. I meah, Xilence can handle 220W of TDP, it should be enough to cool 13600K, at least on paper.
@TheDjarEl
@TheDjarEl 3 ай бұрын
This test makes absolutely no sense. See hardware Canucks vidéo. 95 degrees is a target (frequency is adjusted to match this target, even with the best cooler you can get 95 deg, but with a larger frequency). Fixing the voltage makes no sense with these CPU as they can automatically adjust it to what they need. Only changing the values of the curve optimizer, and the throttle temperature makes sense. You can change the throttle target to 70 deg if you want, with any cooler, and you will just have a lower frequency than with a target at 95 deg. For most applications having 5.2 instead of 5.5 GHz will not be a big deal.

Still waiting for the next gen NH-D15. [sigh]. I do plan a 9ooo series, 16 cores, Zen 5 on AM5, and the plan is to set it to self regulate and clock when & where and how it can, and if it gets to 95 ~ well throttle down already! I don't plan to manually clock the thing up & over-volt it just to see what happens. It's designed to run at 95 and self-regulate to stay about there, when loaded. That sounds fine, but when you manually set clocks and voltages and stuff to show how hot it gets, you're breaking that self management and regulation it is designed to do. It's a little bit like jamming the thermostat in your car and then complaining that it boils. That's the sort of thing Top Gear did, not a real car show ~

I have 7900x with Dark Rock Pro 4 air cooler, H7 Flow case with 2x PWM fans, 140mm front and 120mm rear. Cinebench R23, 10 min 100% CPU workload, temp got up to 94 C. My test show that it is about the case and the CPU cooler. The fans can reduce a few degrees but not much. AMD says clearly that 95 C is tjmax but not the limit for power. So it is a safe working 24/7 temp. without reducing efficiency or risking damaging the cpu.

Just run new test with everything closed. Max temp of cores, 92.9 C, one CCD got to 95 for a fraction of a second. Most of the cores never passed 80 C. So, Dark Rock can cool it just fine, if you have a mesh case with solid airflow.

Because the cooling performance of different coolers in relation to one another can change depending on the amount of heat. This is also not exclusive to Water coolers. Take Noctua's NH-D15 & U12A. Depending on the load, the U12A (can) outperform a D15. But turn the heat up and the D15 will be far in front of a U12. The list you are referring too was created using a 3900x that pushes 135W. And the order of cooler on that list is exclusive for that very specific use case. Change the CPU, change the load, and the order can switch. Keep in mind that the list will not "change" but coolers that perform quite similarly might switch places. We used that list to have an "indication" of what to expect. And because that list would not apply directly to the 7900x, we removed the actual numbers. I pulled up the excel sheet where I have all the cooling numbers for all Ryzen 7000 chips. The 360 vs 280 problem comes up with those chips too. Temp normalized to 23°: LF 360 7600x -> 76,4°C ( .4°C better) LF 280 7600x -> 77°C LF 360 7900x -> 82,9°C (.5°C worse) LF 280 7900x -> 82,4°C So if I would have created "real" benchmark lists for every cooler in combination with every Ryzen chip, depending on the chip, the coolers would have switched places. For any benchmark charts that you see out there, you should take them only as sort of an indication how a cooler will perform compared to other ones. But it's never an exact value if you do not happen to have the exact same system. Most of the times such a list will be somewhat accurate. But keep in mind that things might be open to minimal changes. I've seen a dozen Reddit posts of people asking about a LF 280 vs LF 360 comparison. Then someone posts my video under it, accompanied by an army of people referring to Gamers Nexus video and calling me out for not having 1-1 the same results. What everybody forgets there is that GM pushed almost 200W through their coolers, we are doing (only) 130. And what can happen here is that the results at the top end will start to get squished together and sometimes a bit blurry. I did my very best to find an example for this other than myself as a source. Surprisingly, I did not find a single person that did a complete Arctic Lineup comparison using different loads. The closest thing I could find is Anandtech and their LF 420 Review. They did a bunch of graphs at different loads using various coolers. images.anandtech.com/graphs/graph16427/120490.png -> 200W images.anandtech.com/graphs/graph16427/120491.png -> 250W images.anandtech.com/graphs/graph16427/120492.png -> 340W Ignore the LF 240 and keep an eye on the LF 420 vs Alphacool 360. For 200W, the LF 420 had the first spot. Not by a lot though. For 250W, the Alphacool took over. Again by a tiny amount. At 340W, the difference became quite big. And this is the exact same thing. They switched places because the load changed. But, the trend of the graph is still applicable regardless of the load. At any point, both coolers were at the top, and a lot better compared to the last few ones. Just don't take these numbers 1-1. Look where they stand +- compared to everything else. Sorry for the enormous answer. I'm shocked myself. Just got this question way to often over the last few months and wanted to answer it once and for all. Hope this helped :)

Strange BIOS setups for these chips. I'm wondering already if they'll be like the 5800X. It was discovered that the 5800X is overvolted by most Mobo makers. If you do a negative voltage offset on a 5800X and manually set the PBO to +200, they will boost to about 5.1ghz and still run about 8 to 10c cooler on my NH-U14S.... I'm wondering if the same will apply to these new Zen 4 and they are simply set up crazy. I predict a wave of undervolting videos for new GPUs and CPUs.
