People often do not realize how hard it is to be an artist. They all think we have talent, but what they do not realize is all the hard work behind the work they see. So many hours are spent practicing, fighting against our inner critic, and so many obstacles along the way. Fortunately, awesome artists like you are showing the world that it is not all sunshine and roses. There are thorns we need to all deal with as artists, but it is these thorns that make us stronger and grow. Thank you for showing this Jono. I know it is not easy, but you are doing fantastic work that is truly inspiring to other artists like me. Keep up the great work and know that we love you, even when your sun is not always shining the way you want it to. Hugs.

When we surrender and find the joy in things it becomes easy. Then inspiration is free to flow. What you resist persists so letting go of all self criticism and trusting the process is everything. It took me years to realize it could and should feel easy. 💖🦋✨

but the video is about a different thing. When you draw for yourself - its one thing. When you draw for someone else - and the filming of the process is also for someone else - then of course this is where the outter pressure comes from, and it dictates you what to do. But also, filming is money making, business. No matter what you do, if you are filming it and making money of it - you never 100% do what you want. It is relevant to any profession, art is not special here. I am an artist myself, and ~10 years ago was publishing art on internet a lot, getting some millions of views in total, but at some point of time I noticed that I worry about likes, comments, followers, marketing, much more, than about drawing what I really want to draw. And it was when I just stopped pleasing the audience and left art for myself. Now I have another fulltime job, where I earn a lot and have built a career, which is totally fine for me. I still draw as a hobby, and sell/gift art once in a while, but important thing is that I can draw whatever and however I want, and I have enough free time and motivation for it. Not 16 hours a day of course, but still a plenty. What I am trying to say is that filming and marketing, and pleasing the viewers overall, is not mandatory for being artist. It is a choice, that nobody forces you to make other than yourself. You can be a great artist without it

I also immediately found recording my painting changed my painting process and was very disruptive. I had to realize I had the power to choose what I compromise and trying to find a middle ground forces me to seek a process that gets better recording of footage but allows my painting process to remain the priority. I found I could tell the story in so many different ways after in editing. Thank you for sharing this, you've been a huge inspiration for me. My art dream was crushed as a child and I find it interesting to see people with a very different relationship and history with art.

Is the pay off worth it? In what way do you mean if you dont mind me asking? I have been really thinking about this as I started a small channel a couple of months ago. One of the things that I was very clear with myself is that I am not, and wont be, a KZbinr that creates content around art but an artist that creates a video every now and then. I do not enjoy the filming process at all. I havent decided yet if I will ever show my face on the channel either. Time will tell I guess :)

I started recording my process recently (music making) and posting regular videos here on KZbin, and a surprising benefit I've had is that the regularity of it has actually helped the "art". In each video, both the music and the video editing (hell, even the thumbnail) are a bit more polished. I used to do stuff in a very disorganized way, sometimes months would pass when I didn't do anything at all. Of course, I don't (yet) rely on this for money, which for sure changes how you approach it, but for now it's OK and fun...

Beautiful work and well explained. I used to love sharing my nail art and manicures on instagram and even that became way too much of a burden. Now I can just paint my nails and not have to set up the lights, take pictures, edit and compose a caption with a million hashtags, then save it to post the next morning. Makes it much more enjoyable. I can't imagine how burdensome and procrastination-inducing it'd be to film my art making process, even if I was a full time professional at it.

All of the hardships you find in 'disrupting the flow' is why I could never become a KZbin or use social media as a tool even though I'd love to be able to wield it. I'm too intimately and intuitively involved with my work that it makes it impossible for me to disrupt that connection. I respect guys/girls like you not only being so creative, but making that leap to invest time and energy in sharing the process with the world. I'll keep it to working hard and sharing results to a much smaller audience. PS: Your work is incredible :).

Same here, heck I've forgotten to even photograh some of my sculpture and a lot of the painting commissions I did many years ago ( I don't paint or draw much at all anymore, I know what I'm best at so I stick to that now) althpuogh I'm pretty good now in doing multiple shots of each piece. I thought it might be nice to video me working and making a channel but id forget it was on and it would just be too disruptive. When I work I lose time and before you know it a few hours have gone by and i'm wow., that was intense!.. I love getting into it like that.. being in the zone. I admire Jono for doing what he does though, I sure couldn't do it. Too frustrating for me too lol. I'm very jealous of his studio too !

I was one of those people who couldn't wait to get my hands on a paint brush, an airbrush, tablet ect! But this is so inspiring for kids or anyone thinking of spending large sums of money on supplies. Invest in different degrees of graphite, and charcoal pencils! Bristol and illustration board being about the most expensive . This is a great way to get started ,and like I said, sometimes just looks even better than an actual painting! Much respect man God bless!👍✌️💯

This is why I'm not aspiring to be a KZbin artist. The filming process is disruptive to the creative flow for me - having to check the camera all the time, make room for the equipment, etc. Then there's the hours of editing and uploading afterwards. This is also partly why Instagram's new favoritism towards video clips rankles me. That said, at the same time I'm grateful to the artists like you who've somehow managed to figure out a system - even if it is frustrating - because I really do enjoy the inspiration you share with your processes. I hope all the extra effort is paying off for you.

One of the things that I was very clear with myself is that I am not, and wont be, a content creator that happens to create content around art but an artist that creates a video every now and then. It does seem like you´re just playing with words but those two are NOT the same thing. I do not enjoy the filming process at all. I havent decided yet if I will ever show my face on the channel either for this same reason. I just want to focus on the studying that I am doing and what interests me. Alright, Jono you did it again as you have before, even tho you dont know about it, years ago i started drawingagain after a long timeout cause i have been inspired by your work, these days you made me pickup my 8B pencils, and draw with them, just me, paper, with the movie in background, it took me back into times when i have been drawing just cause i wanted to create and i have had deep desire to make art. Long story short i became illustrator what made my art.. technicaly nice and what companies are looking for, but it sort of dymned the way i always wanted to draw, today i have to say great thank you.. cause i realized that im not bound and any bounds i have had ive put on my self by me.. its nice to again create freely with separating the job drawings with the art i want to present with... once again thank youfor being you and have a great day i wish you only the best things, and hope youll achieve what you want, so ya thanks, PS: sorry for my lazy grammar

I know what you mean man. I have so many unfinished pieces of art I've not finished because my flow was interrupted and then I've gotta wait til I'm in that frame of mind again to complete it. Sometimes when I try to complete them it looks like someone else has done it and it throws off what I was trying to accomplish. It can be discouraging but I believe it's something that all artist deal with. Don't let it bring ya down you're an awesome artist, just know we all struggle with these issues from time to time.

It's interesting to hear other people have this issue. I started filming my drawing and I've found that a lot of the time it just creates frustration with making sure camera settings are correct, changing angles, batteries etc etc. Trying to get the hang of it, but it's great to know others find it a double edge sword and can still make great content. Thanks!

100% true ,I am also a art youtuber, it's very hard to film and draw alone and editing too It's kind off fun somethimes but you get bored very soon. And the worst part is editing and shooting 20 hours + footage and not getting much response. And sometimes it hurts even more when people just draw 1,2 lines and get thousands of views. But it is what it is. Some day we all will grow. 🙂😊

YOU just don't give up follow your passion and continue drawing. if you need to put the camera down, and focus on YOUR art and inspirations. that will allow you to grow as an artist if that is your intention. Peace

This is so true tho, I post videos on ig reels but it's exhausting, like I really need to know or validate myself based on other people's opinions however I'm hanging on. The pressure and expectations are so much. They see the beautiful outcomes but they don't how I or we as artist can see the flaws, that it's not enough, or I'm not as good as someone else. Now that I'm learning a lot about my medium, which is watercolors, it's so fascinating. I'm thinking abojt not posting too much and just keep to myself my progress and my learnings. I just want to relax and focus more on educating myself

Jono, thank you so much for making this! I’ve recently started filming my work to try to make videos and I’ve run into all the problems you stated! It’s really tough trying to film alone in the way that I’d like to while trying to give my pieces the attention I usually would when I’m more consistently in the zone. I’ve always wondered how you got through those early timelapses you did without a team and made them look so effortless lol - so thanks for sharing that it was indeed challenging. It’s very cathartic and I have a renewed sense of the worth of going through that struggle 🙂. Creating good work is one thing, but sharing the work in a way that compliments it is important as well. Thank you for sharing this and thank you for your work over the years. I’m constantly inspired :)

🎼thank you for that reflective video! For me as a singer filming processes might get me into that feeling being "watched" by the camera in first instance as later by the auditorium. I feel like I only should film for defined purposes which I mentally prepare for (which of course needs all the attention you described). I already often felt distracted. All the rest of our precious time may be in flow where we grow and expand ❤‍🔥

That your work is inspiring almost goes without saying ( even the gifted need affirmation once in a while😉) but I'd like to tell you how much your emotional honesty about this industry has helped me look at things with less naive eyes. Even after all these years I still struggle with imposter syndrome and hearing you calmly explain what you go through from day to day in all the different aspects of being a professional creative has helped me stay on track. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing your troubles and how you've adapted. People tend to see the work and maybe a little of the artist working, but they really don't get the process. Yes, inspiration happens, but you need to achieve flow on your terms to consistently produce your best. That's a skill and art of its own.

I can relate very well to your story. Doing Art, KZbin and Business at the same time can have a big impact on the art but at the same time it opens also a lot of new opportunities for the artist. :) Great Video and Great Art 👍

But, here's the rub...who says you'd have had 'that' dream without it?! A dream is just that. A fantasy and vision. If you ask anyone further along in life, the ideal rarely becomes the reality. I'm sure you do, but enjoy what you have, it's a pretty great place for an artist. Your videos are very well made and beautiful to watch. Art in themselves.

As someone struggling to start my own art channel I fully understand how filming your drawing process completely changes the feeling of drawing. I am someone who gets distracted easily and often jump back and forth from drawing, to watching youtube, to making a cup of tea, etc. When I pick up my pencils I don't always know how long I will spend drawing for that session, but if I set up my camera I feel as though I have to sit and draw without interruptions for a much longer time than I otherwise might enjoy. It can be difficult to sit and draw after a long day at work when the drawing process also feels like work. I am hoping to get myself a better drawing setup soon that will allow me to record from multiple angles at the press of a single button, but until then I just need to push through.

I totally agree with the storage problem and constantly getting up to mess with camera for a full time-lapse. Now I just get a couple minutes of video and then a final footage of the completed painting. So my KZbin video will be 5 minutes instead of 30 minutes. Most viewers drop off after 5 minutes. I've seen Emanuelle dascanio do this and he still gets same results but with less video taken.

Lol. Glad Im not the only one who went through this. This is like the video I needed to see that I didnt know I needed to see. Filming my work really humbled me as well. The entire process is definetly as complicated as you explained... after doing it for 8 months, the crazy challenges you speak of actually got me to take a step back and actually learn how to draw properly again FROM SCRATCH. I found the recording process is also extremely distracting but the final outcome of how the work looked on film was even worse. I actually thought my videos were pretty cool but the quality of the work I was not happy with at all. For the time being, I reduced my documentation to writing (blogging) & taking pictures whilst I invest in getting better filming and lighting. Also using the time to actually relearn the fundementals of drawing lighting. But this is really inspiring and hopefully in a few years I'll be ready to document work on video again

The problem is Jono, the technology is available to do what you wanted to do, show your process from conception to completion with you showing the pain of keeping focus to complete the work which is superb in a timescale. Watching you and thinking if Michael Angelo was able to video document the painting of the sistine chapel. You can bet the frustration of achieving that result wasn't all roses and whether there were times he wanted to give up. Your work is exceptional.
