How Filoni FIXED Ahsoka in 4 Episodes | Star Wars Explained

Ahsoka Tano is a fan favorite. With her appearance in the Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 5 (Chapter 13 The Jedi), hype is at an all time high. But Ahsoka was not always so beloved. Once she was criticized as "annoying", "disrespectful", and for being a "teeny bopper". So what changed? I want to talk about how Dave Filloni intentionally crafted Ahsoka's flaws to transform her from a hated newbie into a staple of the franchise.

I agree. I hate it when young characters witness messed up stuff and it has zero affect on them. This is why I love moments like Ashoka racked with guilt after her actions led to the deaths of a squadron of men. Or when Miles Morales runs home, hugs his parents, and hides after being traumatized by what he just saw, like a real kid would.

Since I am the parent of a teenager, I recognized Ahsoka's journey to adulthood. Teens often think they know better than the adults around them. They are impatient, disrespectful and headstrong. This is quite normal! The brains of young humans (don't know about Tagruta) do not fully develop until their early twenties. One of the things this late development brings is a sense of conscience, or responsibility for one's actions. This is where adulthood begins, when we realize we are responsible and our actions have consequences.

I think Ahsoka in Revenge of the Sith/Siege of Mandalor was her best shown. Especially during order 66. Unlike the other Jedi, Ahsoka knew something was a miss and the clones weren’t acting like themselves. She sees 5’s investigation and Rex’s report. She was one of the Jedi that didn’t want to kill anyone because she knew what was going on. All the other Jedi just killed clones because they turned against them

I think a lot of people forget that when you are young you are arrogant and naive and reckless. Ahsoka came into the series as a young padawan child, and children think they are invincible until proven wrong. That is what’s so great about Ahsoka. She was this way because children are annoying, but as she grew older and began to learn more and more, she became mature and selfless and everything not only a Jedi should be but an adult should be. It’s basic character development but we forget about that at times and just want the now now now, which is why we were impatient with her character at the time of her reveal. Luckily we’ve grown with her and matured with her and we welcome Ahsoka Tano among the ranks of one of the greatest characters not just in Star Wars but in television/film.

I think the character of Ashoka comes full circle in her conversation with rex in Rebels. Rex: "In my book, experience outranks everything" Ashoka: "Then I definitely outrank you" It's not said in a snarky or even matter of fact blunt way, it's delivered just right and rex sees she is so much more than the padawan he once said it too. He can't refute what she's said and I think that is the culmination of everything we've seen her go through. Of course that is not the end of her journey and story but I think that completes the clone wars era Ashoka

Naturally, Luke could not give up his attachments, and could not forbid others to have them, but with the dark side he was as categorical as any normal Jedi Here's an example of his quote: *“For a Jedi, there is no place for a rainbow Force,” Luke said quietly. “There’s no room for compromise. We walk the path of the light side, or we fall to the darkness. There’s no gray area, Ben.”* Moreover, his allowing of attachments led to the fact that almost half of his Order fell to the dark side. Kip Durron because of his attachment to his parents who were killed by the Imperials in general staged a genocide with the help of a SunCrasher Which would be unthinkable for the old Jedi Order.
@maddlarkin

@@user-sg4ti3er6k Your pulling some specific examples equally for Kyle Katarn it would be his attachments which led him away from the Darkside and to the path of being a Jedi Knight, rejecting attachments sent him full sith lord (admittedly one of the best ending sequences to a game of all time but still). As I understood it the EU Jedi were more about balance, attachments could strengthen your connection to the light side and ground your humanity, 'alienanity' whatever. The problem with the OG Jedi is their mindset was extreme so they were pretty Amoral on occasion, that comic strip where Qui-gon saves some random alien even though the species is super treatrous, feeds him, carrys him around then slaughters him and all him mates when he does betray him without batting an eye because 'as the force wills' As for the Jedi being above genocide, well I can think of a few examples, the fate of the original Sith species (beaten, erased from galatic records herded unarmed onto a drone ship and fired off in a random direction, thats ethnic cleansing at best, attempted genocide by proxy at worst), Anakins observation the Jedi will kill the senate in Revenge of the Sith, makes sense, they'd all been corrupted and manipulated by a darkside user, tainted they've got to go for the good of the Republic or are least most of them and there are a good few thousand senators. The problem with both OG Sith and Jedi is they were extreme mindsets, jedi rejection of emotion/attachment meant they could rationalise a lot and left them unable to process when they did have emotions and as a result they often ended up with massive over reactions to them, the Sith are self indulgent to the point of self-destruction the balance was realising that both are wrong as extreme mindsets lead to extreme actions and finding a balance where emtionion and attachments are not rejected as a blanket rule but accepted as part of being a living sentient, I think Filioni was leaning hard into this idea in the Father, Son, Daughter clone wars episode, none of them could see a solution as they were all locked to their extreme mindset and as a result they whole thing fell apart.

I agree. Ahsoka is why i'm a fan of "The Clone Wars". She's easily my favorite character. I was surprised to hear that audiences didn't like her. Makes no sense to me. How do you expect a kid to act? If people really didn't like her for the reasons stated, it makes me wonder if they haven't had any interactions with people younger than themselves in their own lives. Whether you're a parent or a boss or a mentor... kids don't know what they don't know. And you often get one of two versions: 1) the "know it all" learn on their own type, or 2) the copy cat type. Ahsoka was definitely the second type, a virtual "mini me" of Anakin in my opinion who followed the example or her master not always the lessons or orders. And it was awesome to see Rosario Dawson play the mature Ahsoka, what a great choice!

Ahsoka was terrible to me because she was an annoying brat that had a lot of negative emotions and that disrespects her master. Imagine what kind of person you would have to be to still be like that after all that Jedi training. 9 year old Anakin was respectful and calm but was still shunned for his emotions and was only trained because he had the strongest talent anyone had ever seen and they thought he could fulfill a prophecy. It seems pretty illogical that Ahsoka wouldn't have been seen as a failure since bad behavior is worse than not being powerful for a Jedi.

He got stuck in the snow on Hoth in V and would've died had Han not saved him, he constantly disappointed Yoda, he rushed off to Bespin against his advice, and he got absolutely crushed in his duel with Vader. On multiple occasions in VI he got cocky and almost died because of it, and when he *did* succeed in the end it wasn't by skill with a lightsaber or Force power, but because he saw the good in his father and was saved by him at the last moment. In stark contrast, Rey was constantly besting vastly more experienced duellists in combat, she was as powerful as a veteran Jedi master with literally no training, and she had a seemingly unlimited range of skills and knowledge that made no sense for a borderline feral child from the middle of nowhere. Introducing a new major character into a series who will be compared with more established - and loved - characters, was never going to be perfect, and the fanbase would shout out at the least little faults of them to make them appear worse than they are (and really Ahsoka and Ezra aren't all that bad in the first seasons of their series). To write them with those faults to begin with, was a big gamble, but Dave obviously had a plan with her to iron them out and make her character grow, and hence us in the fanbase begin to like, then love that character. Had to check up on this. As far as I can see, Filoni only wrote _one_ episode of ATLA: The Serpent's Pass from seaon 2. Zuko has a b-plot with Jet in this episode, and it seems like Filoni was fairly involved with Jet. He directed Jet's debut episode, after all. Actually, Filoni did a fair bit more directing than writing including some defining Zuko episodes like episode 1-2, the Blue Spirit and the final part of the season 1 finale, but it's not like he directed The Storm and, apart from writing The Serpent's Pass, Filoni didn't do ANY ATLA work post season 1. IMO, the most defining Zuko episode from season 1 _is_ The Storm and the most definining Zuko episodes in the entire series are perhaps Zuko Alone, Lake Laogai and The Beach Maybe I'm missing something but, based on official credits, Filoni did not _write_ Zuko. He merely directed him in some early episodes.

At first my thoughts of Ashoka: madam mischief, mistakes are common on a battle field and someone has to make them so she’s kinda the battlefield mistakes scapegoat and honestly played that well with how sorry she is and tries to do better Ashoka now: annoyingly feels like a child who is old enough to know how to be mature but not old enough to actually do it so it feels pretended, then her in rebels she had too much of an air of legendaryness for a random Jedi girl, of course she wasn’t that to the fans but she should have been that to the galaxy which is why it irked me so, she hardly felt like the same character even, was hoping she’d have that mature feeling but it feel more real without so much legendary air, I mean without knowing the clone wars the air of mystery and legend would have been awesome but after knowing her so well in clone wars then pulling her aloft for rebels felt weird cause she wasn’t a legendary hero in the clone wars, she was a on verge of growing up teen starting to learn independence in season seven, so yeah I liked her better early on but I did want to see her grow from those mistakes, but the later clone wars her was no fun and if I didn’t know anything about her she’s be awesome in rebels but already knew her from clone wars as immature, as the scene where she confronts anakin would have been more heart touching if she’s had a more close and respectful mature familial feeling relationship with him before his transformation but she was still at the I can’t handle mom and dad anymore so it’s time for me to move out and find myself stage

Watching clonewars as a little girl i never disliked ahsoka, the reason i loved her so much is that she was given space to be outspoken, to be arrogant in a way most young girls in cartoons werent. I liked that she wasnt told to be more quiet, to behave more submissive as i had been told to.

I didn’t hate Ahsoka when I first saw her. I actually found her relationship with Anakin amusing because it reminds me of me and my older brother. In fact, my brother started calling me “Snips” because I reminded him of her. Then again, I was only 14 when the Clone Wars movie and first season came out. I grew and matured with Ahsoka, and she became a mainstay for me in Star Wars.

I have three younger siblings, the idea that Asoka qualifies as annoying was laughable at the time. She is young and learning and honestly I thought that her first real "failure" was more Anakin's fault than hers. If you are setting a young person up in a situation where their responsibility is likely to exceed their experience you need to plan for misjudgment. Putting a thirteen year old in charge of something where thousands could die should not be plan A without a really good backup.

You can't always expect a Teenage Character to start off great, you gotta have them start off flawed in terms of their abilities, personality and characterization. And that's one thing I love about Ahsoka, she started off being a slight annoyance, but when Filoni started to play around with those flaws and have her learn not only from the likes of Anakin, but also from Obi Wan and Plo Koon, they really started to take a direction with her. I also liked how when Anakin and the others tried to bring her back into the Order, she turned it down. Even though he will always be her dear master and her friends, she can't forget how back handed the High Ranks on the Council just painted her the complete bad guy!

Honestly I kinda like the approach they started off with because if you think about it it really shows how she evolved over the series and I think that the initial way that she was portrayed was kind of a good starting point for her instead of coming in the way that she evolves throughout the series. Honestly it makes sense because as a person grows they go through many personality changes and with Ahsoka that was done perfectly. Young teenagers often are very cocky, disrespectful, annoying, and a variety of other stuff. I think it’s actually kind of genius the way that she was written in the beginning especially when they decided to take the path with her character that we ended up with because it made her growth much more believable. Also the clone wars was really a kind of introduction to the Star Wars series for many people and in a way we got to grow up alongside Ahsoka in a way. As we in the real world evolved and had our personalities change with age this character was doing the same thing alongside us which is incredibly brilliant. I feel like that’s also one of the reasons why she became were the most popular characters because of the fact that she was so relatable to so many fans
