Thank you for the informative tips, I have a little problem with my ball valve on my water tank, It wont drop water if it was all the way down, it only drop water if I pull it and hold it to the middle If I moved slightly a bit downward or upward it stop dropping water so I have to hold it in a specific position for it to work ( I currently put a rope temporarily to hold it on that exact position so the water keep dropping) (also the water stop dripping if I moved it all the way up which is what the ball valve supposed to do as you explained, so at least this is still working) Any Idea what the problem could be ? (Could it be there is some dirt/sediment stuck between the ball valve and the pipe that give water or is it a problem in the ball valve itself ?)

Thanks for this vid. Didn't know you could get different size jets, this may have fixed a problem I've been having with a slow filling cistern.

Just watched a second time as have trouble again. The last bit about connecting it via an olive or washer was very useful. I had trouble sealing it last time as have a fibre washer fitting and it was a pain. I am imaging n olive and o ring would be more reliable.

Hi James, your videos are great!!! I have a question related to the valve. My valve/pipe is doing a strong noise when filling the loft tank. It is like air coming out with the water. This is not constant during the filling process, but only between minute 2 and 1 before the tank is completely full. I know is only one minute, but when someone is taking a shower it is in the noise spot for much longer. I changed the ball valve with a similar high pressure valve, but it did not solve the problem. Any ideas how to solve the problem? Thanks a lot!

Hi. Thanks for another great vid. With the brass ball valve in the video, should it be connected to the pipe with a 3/4" tap connector?

try and do it sequential, isolate the water supply first ---- then show all the different float valves, as there are so many different types these days, and they are a puzzle if you have not done that particular one, hardly ever see a brass " Portsmouth " float valvet these days, they are so simple and reliable, I use to work in hospitals 50 years ago. 4" bore cast iron equilibrium float valves, fitted with molded leather washers, and 20 " diameter copper floats, you needed a wheel barrow to bring them down to the workshop. I like your attitude, and your teaching skills. keep up the good work.

Hello. Great vids. I will definitely be keeping up in the future, as I just discovered your channel just now. I have a question about ball valves and alternatives. I am installing mid to large tanks around my house, and want to maximize the water intake to each tank and make the filling-up process as fast as possible. I am noticing that the 3/4 ball valve that is installed in my only fully-built tank experiences some degree of inefficiency between the intake of its 3/4 ball valve compared to my new tank (which does not have a ball valve at the moment, requiring me to use the manual shut-off to not to make a mess). I am wondering if there are alternatives to ball-valves that would allow for better flow. I am currently contemplating increasing the head of the pipe from 3/4 to 1 inch, and applying a 1" ball valve instead. Any thoughts?

thanks man, work up last night though it had been raining heavy cos I could hear a heavy drip, then I realised there was no rain forecast and eventually that the dripping was in the house, water tank over flowing ( the overflow pipe does not work as the end of it is higher than the top of the tank!! thanks to the twat who installed it!!), this was helpful, will have a go at fixing it tomorrow, I have done it before a very long time ago but was low on confidence, not so much now!! Cheers!!

The modern ballcock was invented by Joseph Bramah (1 of fathers of hydraulics) and Thomas Twyford (made ceramic 1 piece toilet and the Thomas Crapper's toilet). TIP: Get a finger cut, no 1st aid kit... duct tape works for everything. :>)

So this video was of of little use, you gotta have the tools, I just about had enough, then you have the fear something will go wrong, like I found the arm was too long and the ball hit he other side of the tank so I had to adjust that, then when I rejoined the the water pipe it leaked at first so had to re-tighten, I also bought a ball valve repair kit for £1.50 for next time it goes. NIce to have running water back in the house again!!

to be fair a lot of people will teach themselves to do such jobs one way or another or no a man who can, I'm no plumber and did this job myself pre-internet, most have neither the confidence the tools or the time to have a go themselves, those who do could probably do the job themselves without the video, they can get DIY books as well etc... One difference is in the recession unemployed people have the time to do the job, and no money anyway!!

??? not sure what you mean. Anyhow I actually fixed my ball valve today and this video was of little or no use to me because I actually replaced the whole assemble with a new one (cost £10.50 in all) but could have got a cheaper one for about half the price. I mean he has a nice new system there mine was coroded to fuck so I thought replacing was better. Biggest problem I had a was disconnecting the ball valve from the water pipe, hard to see what I was doing as tank is 6 inches from the ceiling

I'm sure she will appreciate the compliment although as you come from a country that produces such specimens as Susan Boyle it obviously doesn't mean as much! I understand that's why you sweatys spend most of your time 'tossing the caber' or so your mum/wife/sister was telling me the other day; you're a lucky man she seems to have a really nice 'personality'. Still never mind, it gets dark before bedtime up there doesn't it??

I was not born a plumber but after several likewise jobs i decided to re train thinking that sticking to one trade would do me good.a mistake of sorts as after my nvQ2 ,corgi then gas safe training and registration of course anyone with you tube can now carry out brain surgery but what about someone who has become expert .through the fire of mistakes and frankly shitty and strange customers Ye to do the basics no problem with a few tricks but to find your fingers sing well thats more gladiator..

Although I love teaching people how to do plumbing ....guess what I have learned ? you only put yourself out of business ....and as to cutting plumbers income try getting paid 35 pounds to fit a ball valve (300 degrees heat in the loft ) half an hours drive there twenty to do the job then half hour back. Yes were all earning fortunes in the recession .....Bollox !
