They are paid relative to how much money their club brings in. Playing every 3 days over an extended period of time is physically overbearing no matter how much money you make or how fit you are. I truly hate when people say "they get paid a lot though". Everyone has it worse than someone else. If you are overworked at your dead end job in a rich country in Europe or North America, you still have it infinitely better than a sweatshop worker in Bangladesh, who has it better than a child slave in Congo. Guess nobody can complain unless they're literally starving, right? Their bodies can't physically handle it. Footballers are getting injured more than ever. THEY WANT TO PLAY but their bodies can't keep up and that's a 100% valid demand. Instead of going after footballers for their lifestyle, maybe the rest of us shouldn't have to sacrifice our bodies and minds just to put food on the table.

"Just rotate more" Do they not understand how much pressure the top clubs have to succeed? How many people could be let go because the club failed their goals? I also connected dots that may not be related, but you often hear about how much time is spent with the ball not in play nowadays (set pieces/time wasting/etc) and kind of think it's literally to catch a breath. The style of pressing clubs need to use to stand a higher chance of winning means a tonne of emphasis on running a LOT. Put that and a busy schedule together and obviously the players fall apart. If we relax the schedule a bit, who knows, maybe the knock on effect means much more exciting games with players giving 100%.
@jackdudley7258

There are many reasons the fixtures are bad, asking teams to rotate is definitely not one of them though. The pressure is internal to the team and their goals. Managers are fully aware of the risk of overplaying players and they are more than happy to poach talents to warm their bench. The fixtures are too much but with a squad size of 26, if you aren’t using that to the full, you don’t have reason to complain. God forbid £50mil Matheus Nunes has to start a game for city

Only premier league fans can change that attitude - I support a club that operates on far less money than any epl team, we qualified play in Asian continental comps this year, and this will 100% result in matches where we have to chuck out the youth team - In fact we already got knocked out of a cup we won the previous year because we mostly fielded teenagers. No, nobody was demanding our managers head because some 17 year olds lost a game.. The fans have to change with the times too imo.

As a football fan, I really want more games BUT footballer's health is also important. So how about we: 1. Introduce rolling substitution in football, similar to NBA where players can be substituted in and out. This may not be 100% similar to NBA, but allowing a player, say, to come out half an hour in the 1st half and then come back on in at some point in the 2nd half will allow players to have more rest (especially players that are key to their team). We can start by allowing a player to be brought back in only once per game. 2. Increase the number of substitutions allowed.

Thing is if you have a “bigger squad” you see it all the time managers still play the best players cause if they’re not pep at the top they’re on chopping block and could lose their job any moment. So they have to play the best team every game so they don’t have that one bad result which gets journalists asking the owner if you’re the right man for the job. Only solution I can see is for the premier league is you remove teams make it 16 teams. I know 20 is a nice round number but playing 30 games, not having as many mid week games or having 8 weeks to rest or spread games out better would be the only quick way to solve it. Think the prem clubs may agree as it would mean more revenue for the 16 clubs remaining but then of course you’re entering super league territory.

Football being controlled more and more by money is sad. As a fan of the sport since late 90's, I have tried to watch every match/tournaments there are, but it's increasingly difficult as they added more. The competitions are getting less prestigious and less exciting too. Lots of fans are blaming players for getting injured all the time. Yeah, no wonder players are getting injured ALL THE TIME with these scheduling. Fans are saying, "but it's their job! They are getting paid a lot of money to kick a ball around!". Well, there should be regulation/cap about how much a player salary can be. Also FFP should be much more strict. I don't even know what FFP regulate right now even or at least it doesn't have the impact it is desired. The clubs also need to put more non profit sponsorship/ charity on the shirt, even if it's just for some games so that the earning from that game can be donated. Having a gambling sponsorship on shirt is just baffling to me. All these enormous money shouldn't be spent on football/footballers. The beautiful game of passion is dying. Well, at least I've got the chance to enjoy it for some time. RIP.

I agree with more game, the reasons is: 1. The top teams get the 'top' problems. If the top teams want to say they're the best team so the challenges that their face must be worthy of that. 2. Discouraging Ego. Some top player are too ego to let go their place in the squad in First Eleven to another teammates. Until their got injury or not fit but still not let go their place to the available teammates then their will blame the games not their own ego. 3. 'Debuff' The Top Ranked. Top team want to dominate the league so them want to always have their best squad but the increasing numbers of games made some 'debuff' effect on them by injuries, fatigue and more hence put the other mid or below teams in the league a little advantage.

To decrease the fixture congestion, there should've been regulations that determine gap between two competitive matches (e.g. minimum 3 days, so no more "boxing day"-type matches where a club plays again the very next day) and how many non-league competitions a club can join in one season (e.g. maximum two, so PL clubs must sacrifice League Cup/FA Cup if they play UCL). I remember when Man Utd skipped FA Cup in 1999-00 season because they played in Club World Cup. Surprised that no club today has taken similar risk so far.

I don't think football will ever do this, but maybe teams should be allowed unlimited substitutions like they are in basketball for example. You can take players off at any dead ball and bring them back into the game as well. The problem is absolutely none of the players are used to that, but that allows you to make sure nobody plays a full 90 mins because there should be very few games where you need that.

The "shit got real" moment was when Pedri was overworked , not that it hadnt happened before but that was the moment it went from a joke to worrying reality of the near future . 5 -10 years ago young players playing games on a consistent basis was seen as a way to for them to mature faster and have longer careers as top players (hense why every youngster with little to no accolades or note worthy plays gets valued at over 50 mil ) , now players starting young and playing consistent also makes them an integral part of the team which makes the coach want to play them when they are available but since seasons now include so many games it almost gurrantees that they will get overworked , Football used to be the Sunday event of the city and sportsworld now its a product for money to make the rich richer and Uefa and Fifa continiously try to squeeze it dry , first it was fines and regulations then it was sponsors now it is physically pushing players past their limits (assuming they play all games at a normal level)

I feel like people dont realise or refuse to open up to another option: shorten the games. If you want players to keep playing the current number of games without compromising on their fitness and health, then shorten the length of games. Instead of 90 minutes, play it in 80mins, 40 mins for each half. Reduce or avoid extra time in cup games as well.

The answer would be then to reduce the pay by 10% or so per player and reduce the number of competitions. It is definitely the case that players are over played but also it is a two way street where the average player pay needs to be reduced.

Some ideas for English football 1. Shrink the Prem to 18 teams like Germany and France 2. Abandon the League cup or make it so that only teams not playing in Europe can enter. 3. Have a mandatory winter break maybe as long as for two weeks. 4. Probably super unpopular but I would get rid of the Boxing day fixtures too so that players can spend their winter holidays with family.

The EPL(and other big leagues) do not want to reduce the teams, UEFA do not want to reduce European games and the teams from smaller leagues also do not want reduction of the Europeans matches because this is there big revenue and exposure, UEFA and FIFA are not willing to reduce the international games(most boring part of the season) and no one wants to scrap the League cup because is going to upset the teams from the lower leagues. etc.

A lot of comments referring to how things were used to be and etc. I still see world class players with a lot of money but unable to run straight or needing medical treatments for life because of the physical consequences of 15+ years careers overclocking their bodies, drainages, accelerated recoveries, all of this is a ticking bomb where you won't be able to do your job anymore once it hits. That's when it a football calendar for top players were, at most, 55-60 matches a year, not now that it would approach 80 and for a wider range of players.

I have a pretty strong opinion about this topic. Firstly the national competitions should resemble Germany, 1 supercup match, 18 clubs league, cup competition with 1 match per round, simple as this. Secondly, players should have a limit of games they are able to play per season let's say 40, then if they go over the limit the clubs would be punished financially by other means, Thirdly big teams that usually play in all the competitions must have bigger squads with 3 players per position. If there is so much extra money in the game let's make the squads larger and embrace rotation. For my last point I want to remember y'all that when football was played in a regional level and it expanded to national competitions people complained, then again it expanded to continental level, more people complained, now it's just following its natural course of transcending into the global level of competitions like the new fifa club world cup. It will not be a smooth transition but the people involved should take the proper measurements in order to make it work.

I mean earning a lot of money doesn`t save someone from becoming physically and mentally fatigued, which is likely what happens to a lot of players, especially the best ones who play for the best teams and nations, so they usally go quite far in multiple different tournaments. while the body can adapt, at a certain point it won`t because it doesn`t get the right time to recover from the physical or mental stress. Like Rodri and Foden got rest at the start of the season, due to having played too much the season before, that is a sign that the system is broken, fans wanna see the best players play at their best, but we won`t get that due to the amount of games. the amount of games also increases their risks of injuries.

Players are “complaining” about their careers being shortened and their bodies being destroyed because of the greed of FIFA, UEFA, and the owners of these clubs. They want to squeeze as much profit out of the players as they can and fans are stupid enough to tell the players to stop complaining, as if they aren’t being exploited by the people who own the sport.
