Crossover SUVs: they’re not the most exciting cars out there. Despite their sales success, automakers rarely release crossovers that make a splash, especially with enthusiasts, and that’s where Ford comes in. With the release of the Bronco Sport and Maverick light truck, both based on the Escape CUV, Ford has made crossovers exciting. But how did Ford develop the relatively sleepy Escape into two separate vehicles that has even the most stalwart car nerds turning their heads?

The Chrysler Airflow did that in 1934. They actually showed ads in movie theaters where a stunt driver drives an Airflow off a cliff, does a full somersault, lands on its wheels, and drives away. And around 1984, Volvo ads show a stunt driver driving a Volvo wagon off a 5 story parking garage, landing nose first on the pavement. The driver stepped out and walked away!

I drive a 2022 Ford Maverick XLT and it’s honestly spectacular. I was a mechanic for years and my only concern is engine reliability. Otherwise it’s a great vehicle, I’m at 180 miles right now and have yet to hit half a tank. With that, I’ve driven with all seats filled, a load in the bed, and on the highway multiple times. It works amazing in every way. Only thing I haven’t done is towed yet but I’m planning on it. With its track record so far I’m betting it’ll be great. Ford really is starting to put its name back in the game as one of the dominant manufacturers and I’ve been enjoying it thoroughly.

Reliability shouldn't be an issue, especially with the hybrid that we're getting. The 2.5 hybrid system Ford uses has proven itself to be insanely robust, and that e-cvt is about as durable as a transmission can be. The 2.0 might have a few more issues, but even that is a very durable and proven powertrain.
@commodorebud
@commodorebud 2 жыл бұрын
the 2.0 has been in use since 2008. the transmission is definitely newer but used in the higher end escape, bronco sport, the edge, the discontinued focus, and the transit connect. it's been around for 2 (almost 3 years) now and I don't think there's been any big recalls regarding it.
@KB-bh9hp
@KB-bh9hp 2 жыл бұрын
@@commodorebud Yeah, not to mention many of the components used on the hybrid have been out for over a decade as well, and also have a very solid dependability track record. As an American, people here love being able to sit high and look over the road. They like "off-road" capability/high clearance. If people need more space than what a crossover or SUV offers, people usually get a pickup-truck. Which is also a very popular family vehicle here. Americans love big and rugged, overall. I also wish wagons and hatches were more popular here.

I was surprised when he said people had to pick between good gas mileage or practicality. Wagons or as we call them in Germany "Kombi" (as in Kombination) were both practical and had better gas mileage than a SUV. So while apparently in the USA people had to pick between SUV or Sedan, everyone in Germany drove a Wagon/Kombi. And this is still what people mostly pick. For example: In Germany you will see more Audi A4 Avant & Audi A6 Avant as well as Mercedes-Benz C-Class and E-Class Wagons than you will see the Sedan Versions of all of these Models. I always wondered why a Kombi/Wagon is less popular in the USA than a Sedan. No wonder it took so long for Audi to bring the RS6 Avant to the USA, but i hope all the other Kombi/Wagons the USA doesn't get from us Germans because they think the Americans don't buy them will now come considering the Success of the Audi RS6 & insane Sales Numbers. Also there is the cheaper Audi S4 and S6 Avant (a Version between RS Models and Standard Audi A4 and A6 Avant) Mercedes-Benz, VW, BMW, Audi etc all have Kombi/Wagon Versions of almost all their Models that i think arent offered in the USA but should be. Kombi/Wagons are always better than a Sedan if it's an Option Prost & Cheers from the Bavarian Alps

@@steve_the_vehicon632 exactly my thoughts. My wife wants one just for this reason. Her nearly only use of her current Trax is back and forth to work, and it does that well, but I'd be very handy to have a bit more capability than the Trax without having to take my Yukon and trailer for those middle-sized things that a small bed would work great for. CUVs are superior. If you are tall it’s difficult to get in and out of a low wagon. In addition they are safer in collisions with trucks, not to mention better visibility. There is no penalty in mpg or handling. They are cheaper to insure and hold their value better.
@Bartonovich52

Define “better”. A wagon has less usable interior space. Is more difficult to enter and exit (which is why older people buy crossovers by the score). Lower ground clearance. And at the end, is really just a “shorter” crossover (because most crossovers are just “taller” wagons).

Actually it should have been called the Model E to pay homage to Fords other major cutting edge vehicle that changed the automotive landscape over a century ago, the Model T. I hate the fact that Ford attached to their Mustang moniker. And on top of that they go and also use the Mach name, also a Mustang staple to further blemished Mustang history. Although I would have been more ok if they just called it the Ford Mach E. Sidenote: I suspect one the reasons Ford chose not to go the route of Model E was because Tesla was using Model for all their car models. Ford does own the trademark Model E however.

I think the problem with wagons is that they are classified as sedans by the EPA, but get worse gas mileage than normal sedans. Crossovers are classified as SUVs, and get better gas mileage than typical SUVs. Thus crossovers, though getting worse gas mileage than a wagon, do better relative to EPA targets. A situation where outdated laws and guidelines (not updated to how manufacturers are skirting them) end up rewarding making less efficient vehicles. Europe does it different ways, and wagons are a lot more popular there.

Well, it's good that they're finally mixing up the truck sizes again. Especially if there's a range of work-oriented trucks and such rather than the off-road *playing* orientation. I think there's a real gap in smaller working/delivery trucks/trades vans that especially EVs would be a natural combination with. Being kind of a handyperson/semi-shadetree mechanic, I could easily see myself in a circumstance where like a Maverick-sized thing with maybe just an extended cab and some racks for long things like lumber or ladders would fit. Or maybe a bit more of a little van thing going on behind. I don't really need crazy offroad suspension travel and such, and I can't remember the last time I had more than one passenger ...being able to carry a reasonably heavy load for what it is and just not get stuck would be fine, and I could see similar vehicles, maybe even more basic, rolling around the cities for light deliveries and other stuff you used to see mini-trucks doing. Some times in my life I've needed a full-sized truck, but I doubt the local florists etc really need like F150s. (Though actually a few around here use those quaint antique ones, which is cool, I guess. :) With these skateboard platforms it'd probably be pretty easy to make a retro styled version without changing much technically but crash tests. :) Right now with everything kind of designed around a lot of passengers, it's easy to miss just how much room you can have in a pretty small vehicle with electrics.

Look at a maverick size vs an obs chevy single cab short bed pickup. Theyre like the same size except the 4.5 foot bed on the maverick is basically useless

@@alexanderdrago7166 Yeah, those four door pickups seem to be way too much a compromise to be good at either thing, especially the smaller they get. I guess some people must like em but maybe that goes to them being more recreational than working vehicles.

I just converted the price to my local currency. Damn! America has some good cars that are well priced. I mean the Maveric was priced way lower than I thought; Here the honda City is more expensive than the Maveric. And our wages here are lower than there. No wonder almost all working American can afford one.

The average new vehicle in the US costs north of $42,000. Automakers don’t even want to sell “entry level” products anymore, and low interest loans means anyone can get cheap financing. Cars/trucks are a LOT more reliable nowadays (keeping a vehicle for 10+ years isn’t unusual anymore) and buyers want features. They’d rather have one truck or SUV that does it all (hauls lumber while still seating 5) over a separate truck and sedan.

Yeah, seems to mostly be low because they saved so much on development. Personally I can't wait for the release of the Maverick - I hope it will make some Ranger drivers considering upgrading and drive down the price of used Rangers (pre 2011) so I can pick one up for less.

My favorite lineup is still with regards to crossovers is Subaru. All they are missing is just bring back the Baja and we got the whole band back together.

I would love to see an ascent sized baja

@@TommyArianoutsos Either Ascent or like how it was before based on the Legacy Outback platform. Now just use same chassis as outback. I would be fine with that, still have my Baja 15 years later and haven't found anything to be a better weekend warrior outside of maybe the explorer sportrac.

I totally would have bought a Baja if it weren't for that tiny little engine.
@silverharvest753
@silverharvest753 2 жыл бұрын
@@speedingoffence Are you refering to the 2700LB rated towing capacity? If so that is a 90% Use Case Scenario. Or are you talking about the turbo'd stock 230HP, 270FTLB of Torque. That can easily be tuned and upgraded with rather cheap after market parts to push into the 300-400s. Since it is the EJ25 engine, same one that is in an STI, Spec B and XT Variants up until 2013. Stock it pulls more than most cars out there now.

@@silverharvest753 Perhaps it was a regional thing, but here the Baja was only available with the 165HP 2.5. 230 HP wouldn't have gotten me into the seat, either. Beyond that, I'm not a fan of turbo engines- I don't really care how much power an engine produces at 5000 RPM, I care how power it produces at 1000 RPM, because that's where I need it, especially in an AWD vehicle. I don't race my cars, I drive them, and when I go for power, I want it immediately. I don't want to have to keep my engine revved at 3000 RPM while I'm driving in traffic in case I need to pass. Also, like 99% of car owners, I don't know how to troubleshoot my own engine beyond the basics of what sounds or smells usually mean, and even then, I don't know how to fix it. I don't want to have to pay someone $120 an hour to figure out what's going on when something goes wrong. If you're not a mechanic, aftermarket tweaks are just a ticket to an empty wallet Sure, on paper you could get decent numbers out of it, but at the end of the day there's a reason that people weren't buying them, and the most cited reason is that little engine.
