@@TheModernMartialArtist Yeah, a lot of the effectiveness of his long guard stuff came down to his strength, not all of it, but when Ali tried to do some of it to Frazier, it was a lot less effective because Joe could just push right past the feather duster, whereas foreman could just shove him back and keep his distance.

Hell yes!! I'm a former sparing partner of George before the Adilson Rodriguez bout. No one hit even close to as hard as he did. I was in (×5)David Tua, Samuel Peter, and a number of other HWs camps. No one was close. And his physical strength was inhuman. He crushed my jaw towards the end if camp and he took care of me for 3 years as I recovered. He payed me at max rate the whole time and gave me the greatest gift imaginable at the end. We talk every Christmas morning. Amazing human. He's still trying to theologically save my "big white butt." I will always love him.

Lennox Lewis said that Shannon Briggs was the hardest puncher he ever fought. The same version of Briggs was getting outmuscled and pushed around by 48 year old Foreman years after the Moorer win. I think two other things that aren't often mentioned are the change from 15 rounds to 12 rounds and from 8oz to 10oz gloves. This allowed a lot of older boxers to stay around for longer and compete at the top level as they needed less stamina (and in fact embarrassingly they had better stamina than some of the younger fighters) and the 10oz gloves meant that punches were slightly easier to take which is helpful for guys who's ability to take a punch is on the decline.

Because of all his past experience and how active he was with tune-up fights, the older Foreman still had great timing and judgement of distance despite being slower. Old Foreman also trained seriously to improve his stamina, on top of learning how to pace himself better, which the younger Foreman didn't think was necessary. Older Foreman was also much more emotionally stable.

one thing i've picked out about great fighters is they favor styles where each attack does 2 jobs. the punch loads up the next one, or turns into a screen or frame, or turns into the guard. there's no wasted movement. if it completely whiffs it can be converted into something else you can work with.

I actually think Mike Tyson would get cooked against either version of Foreman. Foreman was stronger and in style he could easily set up Tyson with fight ending shots. See what Fireman did to Joe Frazier who was Tyson’s prototype. Tyson’s best hope is knock out Foreman early and Foreman had a god level chin. Foreman has only been knocked out once in his career but other wise he’s always ended fights on his feet. There is an andectote from where Tyson straight up told Don King his promoter that he refused to fight against Foreman. His old trainer Cus told Tyson to avoid fighters like Foreman

I think a pre prison Tyson beats George. I know people make the Frazier comparison but Mike was a fast starter and Joe was a notoriously slow starter. Mike also didn’t bend over at the waist like Joe. Mike would have given George too many angles and Forman would pay big for every miss. Now an older Mike who didn’t use angles and jump shifts as he use to may have had a hard time getting through that jab and I don’t know how it would have turned out if George ether clipped him with that right or dug into Mike with body shots that would slow Mike in later rounds. Great video. Thank you!

I feel like the cross guard must have been implemented after he saw Ken Norton use it so effectively against Ali and he never wanted to lose like he did to Ali again and I guess he didn't. A cross arm guard is quite underrated, Rocky Marciano is the only undefeated heavyweight world title holder (retired) and he used the cross arm guard.

And Moore vs Marciano is my favorite fight of all time. If Moore were younger would have been even better but he kept dominating afterwards so he was by no means shot.

@@TheModernMartialArtist you should do a video on it, it's a really under-appreciated fight, often written off for as you say people claim Moore to be too old, although it was in his first try at becoming heavyweight world champion and went onto fight a decade longer. Also Archie Moore was asked did he think he could win when he knocked down Marciano did he think he was going to win and Moore said "no, that was the hardest punch I'd ever thrown in my life and all did was make him angry".

@@jayedwards4787 this is just utter nonsense it is very effective. Norton completely neutralised Ali's jab. I don't remember Frazier using it at all, he used bob-and-weave. Your last point is just total nonsense Holyfield landed because he was young quick and highly skilled. Against a Foreman that was old, yet his cross guard stopped him from being KO-d even though he was in his 40s!

I remember running down the street cheering when he won his title in his 40's. One of the men that taught me to box was a former sparring partner of Foreman's. He had nothing but good things to say about him. He was also one of the hardest punchers I ever met, and said that he paled in comparison to George.

So much of young Foremans style was based off trapping. I see it all the time in your videos. You should do one on how under recognized it is as an effective fighting skill. People just think Wing Chun and don't realize how useful it really is.
