I think you’re right. I think his heart was unperturbed, both due to out of this world physical conditioning conditioning and a sort of Zen approach to his fights. It’s too bad there is so little information about him. He was definitely ahead of his time in skills, original style and attitude towards boxing. It’s not clear if he had a trainer or someone that guided him or if he was one of those rare humans that teaches himself; an autodidact for boxing. He would have had to be very bright. I think his goal after boxing was to study medicine. I have no doubt he could have achieved his goal. He was a tremendous loss at such a young age, not just for the boxing world, but what he could have contributed after his boxing career.

It’s fascinating rewatching this after so many years (and with the always interesting breakdown by DC on top of that). It’s strange how my memory of this classic was basically a one sided domination by Sanchez. And I would’ve guessed it ended by rd 4 or 5. After watching this video about 40 years later I’m surprised and impressed with Gomez’s ability to trap SS on the ropes and in the corner. WG landed quite a bit more than I remembered. That straight right/Left hook actually appeared to buckle the knees of SS. I would’ve given WG the slight edge in punching power (could be wrong as WG was moving up in weight here) so it’s surprising to see how early WG eyes began to swell from SS punches. Whereas SS seemed to barely have a mark on his face. I guess as David pointed out that’s the difference between SS ability to roll with the punches VS WG apparent inability to. I even saw a few times where WG actually walked into SS counters. That’ll definitely cause swelling 😂 against a precision striker like SS was. That lightening quick counter from SS in rd 1 that dropped an off balance WG was about as quick, slick and accurate of a punch as there can ever be. I bet at that instant Gomez knew without a doubt that he was in the ring with an opponent unlike any he’d faced before. That had to be shocking and disheartening for WG, but he remained 100% focused. Too bad for him that his eyes only stayed about 50% open 🤣 Would’ve loved to have seen a rematch a year or two later. Such a sad tragedy about Sanchez.

People forget that, in addition to taking out Gomez, he stopped and young + up and comjng Azumah Nelson too. Who then wwnt on to dominate the division for a.decade after Sanchez passed. When one considers how young he was when died ... you have to step back and wonder at just how long amd fruitful a career Sanchez might have had. There would unquestionably have been massive payday super bouts with Duran and Arguello down the road for him had he not passed prematurely. A true shame.

Hey David, I have a request... The very first combat sports event that I ever watched (as a 10 year old in 1982) was the HUGE 🥊match between HW Champion “The Easton Assassin” Larry Holmes VS “Gentleman” Gerry Cooney I remember it being on HBO, (might’ve been PPV) I remember recognizing that it was a big event because my dad invited my Grandpa (his dad), a couple of my uncles and a few of my dads friends. He’d invited several people a few months before for the SRL vs Hearns fight, but for some reason, maybe I just wasn’t quite old enough yet I didn’t pay much attention to that one. But the Holmes-Cooney really made an impression on me. The huge crowd, champ vs challenger, black vs white, red vs green, skilled Boxer (best HW jab ever) VS Big puncher (nasty left hook). Both undefeated... it was the first fight that really drew me in and from that point I began training Boxing myself. I wanted to acquire Holmes jab and Cooneys left hook 😆. My bedroom became littered with Ring magazine issues as well as Boxing Illustrated. Anything that I could get my hands on. I saved my $ and bought some 12oz Sugar Ray Leonard Franklin brand gloves (caused my dad to have to get his ear drained to avoid cauliflower at one point 😆). I continued training and had many youth matches in Tulsa as a teen. As an Okie i wanted to be the next Sean O’Grady... anyway I’m getting carried away. I’d love to see you cover the 1982 Holmes vs Cooney fight at some point. Your breakdowns and analysis are my absolute favorite on KZbin.

A couple minutes before you mentioned that Sanchez was rolling with the punches, I was thinking the same thing. Great way to mitigate damage and frustrating for the other boxer. You can feel when a punch hits clean or not. When Sanchez got hit with that second hook after rolling with the first punch, he couldn't see it. With boxers who roll well, throw combinations and make sure you throw in blind spots.

Gomez was smaller he moved up but he can tell Sanchez was bigger he probably beats him that night anyway but I can’t help but to think a great big fighter beat a great smaller fighter that night. They both was young they was in their prime fr too, 22yo and 24yo that’s crazy
