In the post-Cold War world, France, Germany and Poland concocted the Weimar Triangle as a way to foster cooperation amongst the three countries. The trio has weakened over the years - due to differing national priorities - but Russia's invasion of Ukraine might necessitate getting the gang back together.

I used to live (civilian) in the Fulda Gap (3:35) just after the wall came down. This was where WWIII was supposed to start as it was the most westerly position of the Warsaw Pact forces. Although Paris was "only" a seven hour drive from Fulda, the hardest part was just to get from Fulda to Frankfurt, because in those days, there were basically no East-West Autobahns because they didn't want to facilitate the Russian advance. It would take well over an hour to get from Fulda to near by Frankfurt on twisty country roads. When we saw the U.S. army base in Fulda being shut down after the Cold War ended; within three months, four out of the five whore houses near the base entrance also closed. 🤣

West Spanish Peak in Colorado is 13,600 ft. in elevation. That video is being shot from somewhere around 13,000 ft on the ridge approach to the summit. That is a nasty place to wait out a storm. And under a tree ain't a great place to be when lightning strikes around the peak! I remember my hair standing straight up from static electricity on Mt. Yale in the Collegiate Peaks. No lightning had struck anywhere yet, but you get an "uh oh!" feeling that "this is not a good place to be right now!" It scared the pants off me and I started down immediately.

back 10 years ago on French media (TV, newspapers), almost nobody mentioned Poland on any issues / topics as the country was not considered as important in the overall EU landscape. Today in 2024 (since 2019)? There are not a day/week where some Analyst isn't talking about a Political / Economic / Military / EU Security / Immigration topic without mentioning Poland... Poland has always been the key to the security of Western Europe (and on the other side of the coin, the security of Russia). That's why Hitler and Stalin agreed to split it. Part of the Molotov/ Ribbentrop pact was an agreement that Poland would no longer exist because its independence was a threat to both sides. I suspect that the reason no in Europe has cared about Poland in 30 years is because the US has underwritten the security of Western Europe since 1946. As we here in the US begin to reinsert our heads into our rectums and begin to forget the lessons of the last century, namely the dangers of isolationism, I imagine Europe is going to become a hell of a lot more interested in Poland.

Storm Shadows, ATACMS and drones now give UA the capacity to hit targets several hundred kilometers inland. But that only allows to hit the logistical and supply nodes leading to the front line. If the objective is to hit the industrial heartland which is actually producing the weapons, then yes, they will need even longer range systems to do so. @nervechews6781 - It's true that Europe (well, France) and Russia both have nukes. However, so do India and Pakistan. They fought the Kargil War in the 1990s and neither side used nukes. That shows that just because both sides have nukes doesn't necessarily mean that they will be used. So, there is precedent for conventional war between nuclear-armed opponents.

I get very confused regarding what is, or is supposed to be, Poland. It has changed size and shape so many times, over such a long period. Do you feel the current borders are…. I’m not sure of the correct word I should use. Is the population happy with the borders as they stand? Given that some of the post-WWII agreements happened Because Western Europe and the US both knew we couldn’t fight Russia, I have mixed feelings saying the West abandoned Poland, East Germany, and Eastern Europe to Stalin. It had to have felt that way, but I suspect the alternative would’ve been Stalin continuing to march westward. There’s no way he was ever going to come help stop Hitler (a former ally) and not keep what he’d taken control of from Hitler, especially not the part of Germany his soldiers had come through. It would’ve been great if the west could’ve defeated Hitler without Russia stepping in. It was a deal with the devil against the then-currently-worse-devil of Hitler-which seems to happen a lot in politics. Poland’s position between Germany & Russia’s a dangerous place to be. I’m just glad Poland and Germany are working hard to build an alliance that could make both stronger!

The 17th-century Polish "democracy" wasn't really a democracy in contemporary terms. Yes, the kings were elected, but only by noblemen (szlachta), a relatively small percentage of the population. And this lot paid attention only to their own interests, not particularly concerned about the nation.

It's an interesting conundrum - if threatened by a country with vast strategic depth do you go all in and invade knowing that any remnant is going to exploit your stretched supply lines ... or do you settle in for a long haul defence knowing it will come down to a slugging match of fires-in-depth where the victor is the one with a sustainable supply chain and the economy to support it? Personally i couldn't think of anything more masochistic than invading Russia - the military challenges aside, the real inhibition is that you as the invader would become morally responsible for all of Russia's social problems, its unemployment, alcoholism, HIV, decrepit infrastructure, educational failures... the list goes on.

The Depression was 2008 Global Financial Crisis. We're past that phase. Feels very 1938. Small scale dress rehearsal in preparation for the big show. You should be looking for 80 to 90 year cyclical patterns, not 100. That's based on "The Fourth Turning" 1997 by Strauss and Howe. But also based on The Fourth Turning and it's 2023 sequeal "The Fourth Turning is Here" there are several outcomes that look nothing like the last 4th Turning crisis and some scenarios that completely break the Strauss-Howe Generational Historical Model. So Read 📚 Up before you start sentences with "I think". 😊

If they start talking with Sweden as well (along with anyone else who borders Russia), that's more than enough counterbalance against Russia. If the US is brought into the periphery of this agreement to a) supply arms and b) counter any support from China, we're looking at a group that can ensure lasting peace no matter how the Ukraine war turns out.
