I think Mindbender is probably the most valuable coaster in Canada, probably even more so than the big B&Ms at Wonderland, it’s a quite significant piece of coaster history

Galaxyland is my home park and Mindbender was my first "big coaster". So this ride has lots of nostalgia for me, and I feel like I can still hear the deafening roar the coaster made when it passed through its layout.

I think the problem with Mindbender is that it just got so screwed over by timing. The ride does not fit in well with the new family audience the park is now focusing on with the Hasbro rebrand as it was literally one of the most intense coasters in the world and to make matters worse it had a ridiculous 59 inch height requirement. On top of this Canada was pretty strict with covid restrictions which likely hurt Galaxyland and the West Edmonton Mall as they had to stay shut down for over 6 months. It’s very possible that paying for whatever was needed to keep Mindbender around was unfeasible or not seen as worth doing. My hope is that the park will replace the attraction with a legitimate family thrill coaster rather than just a bunch of smaller attractions but I guess we will see what happens. Sucks regardless that we had to lose such a legendary coaster.

Very well put. In all the videos I watched about mindbender, not one person spoke about the 59inch height requirement. Thanks for the info. There's a lot of teens out there that aren't even 59 inches yet, so that knocks down a lot of riders.

With Galaxyland being 20 minutes away from me this pains me so much. Since the hasbro re theme they bumped the day pass price from $45 to $65, and now that we know mindbender will never operate again I wont even consider paying that much money to go there. I was the on the first public train on mindbender when they officially reopened it from covid in 2021 and looking back I was the first of the last riders of mindbender, as they closed it two weeks later. I honestly believe the mall's initial intentions were to fix it, as when it went down, the website for galaxyland stated that it would only be down for around a month, before changing it to being closed indefinitely. The only logical conclusion I can think of is they eventually found a problem with it so major, that it wasnt worth reopening. The mindbender may be the most famous ride at galaxyland, but it really did not get that much ridership, and obviously not enough ridership to warrant fixing it. About a possible relocation, I doubt it, but its possible if a park is willing to put in the money to fix it. I'm going to miss the crap out of it for sure as it was so awesome living this close to such a rare and legendary ride. RIP

I have rode the Mindbender from 1987 to 2019, essentially every year. Amazing experience, including riding backwards in the rear car of the blue train. This rollercoaster was iconic for the amount of G forces riders would experience. Removing this premier attraction is a monumental bad move. Everything requires maintenance and repair. We don't see Magic Mountain demolish the 1976 (Schwartzkopf) Revolution because it needs major maintenance, or Cedar Point demolish the 1964 Blue Streak, or King's Island demolish the 1979 Beast for the same. And even though these coasters are far from their respective amusement park's premier attractions today, they are on ACE's Landmark list. Also keep in mind there are dozens of rollercoasters operating which were built in the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s and are *_outdoors, in the elements_* and still maintained and operating just fine to provide tons of thrills at Cedar Point, Darien Lake, Canada's Wonderland, Magic Mountain, La Ronde. (including Schwartzkopf coasters). The Mindbender has never seen rain, snow, high winds, extremes of temperature or freeze-thaw cycles. It is almost preserved in a museum environment. I call BS on it being "beyond repair" or "too costly to repair". Mindbender was the premier attraction at Galaxyland. It was recognized by ACE for its extreme G forces, and being the only indoor rollercoaster of its kind, and appreciated by WEM visitors from all over the world. What could 555 replace the Mindbender with to be an even more thrilling and extreme experience to get the visitors and revenue?

On its own its upsetting. But what upsets me EVEN MORE is the fact that it doesn't even look like they are replacing it with anything on a remotely similar caliber, the site used the word "FAMILY thrills" when describing the potential replacement which doesn't bode well when anticipating a new big thrill coaster to go in its place. What concerns me the most is that they are headed in the direction of becoming yet another dinky family park which with this being the only really viable option to me as a wannabe enthusiast rn (and even then it's too expensive) it just sucks

Mindbender was monumental to my coaster journey. Only the second coaster to feature inversions I ever rode (and the first I rode willingly), and one of the coasters to get me interested in coasters. I do hope it gets relocated so I can ride it again, which is certainly doable considering it's a near clone of the well traveled Triple Loop at Indiana Beach. I suspect the closure is most related to Triple Five Group's financial situation (I mean, look at the American Dream Mall saga if you want to know their finances) and family rides being more profitable rather than service life.

I left a 1 star review on galaxyland after they announced this, then cried for the day. I've ridden it several times and it was my inspiration for loving coasters. I would always see it as a little kid when I went up to west Ed and would always run up to the board to check my height until I was finally tall enough to ride it lol. I think my parents may have bought one of the pics of me riding the coaster at some point, but maybe I'm misremembering there. I hope Gene can save it, at least in part. It's such an iconic ride and it would be a shame to relegate it to the history books forever.

I live in Edmonton Alberta and I grew up riding this coaster and boy can I tell you I’ve never been on anything close to as extremely as the mind bender I personally think it’s the best roller coaster in Canada. I know they have official announce that its closing but you never know what the future holds. Hopefully they can find a solution to get it fixed before actually fully going through with removing it because once they start doing that there’s no going back and personally and I guarantee a lot of other people think the same but there’s nothing that you could put in that space that could be better than the mind Bender west Edmonton mall is making a very bad decision.

Wow this is the best video about this situation. I'm a soo mad and agree soo much as well as they people who loved and rode this coaster here in Edmonton. We all had our childhood memories taken away and it soo depressing. It was an absolutely amazing coaster to ride, the G forces you experience during the second loop were insane. From the first drop to the dayum mirrors at the end, everything about the ride was amazing and it breaks my heart that they did this especially going to galaxyland in the past months with my neices and just waiting to take them on it so they can experience the thrill we all did the first time riding. 😭😡😭😡😭 My first time riding story was I was probably around 13-14, and was soo scared so that I planned that I would sit in the seat buckle up and lower the lap bar, only to then release it and run away. Yeah that didn't work as planned. 🤣 That's when I learned those lap bars lock into place and if you dont say anything your pretty much stuck. I was to shy and embarrassed to say anything so all I could do is accept my fate and pray, I thought I was dead. However it was the best decision I made and I couldn't stop riding it from there. 😂

I live about 12 minutes drive to the mall...Complete and utter disappointment! You are exactly right, it's quite possibly the dumbest move to transform the park to a knock off version of Disneyland that's only targeted at families. Especially with so much wasted space. Anyway this was my post I made after watching Coaster Studio's video announcing Mindbenders closure: "Born and raised here in Edmonton, age 39. The Mindbender has been my home park roller coaster for almost my entire life. This news wasn't surprising but still devastating. A few weeks ago I did talk to someone who works for the mall, he said they were having a hard time finding the parts they needed to get it back up and running. Many times over the years Mindbender has closed for long periods but they always managed to eventually get what they needed. As a huge coaster enthusiast and having been to parks all across North America I too can attest the Mindbender was a beast! When you rode it, it woke you up, it was tough but always such a thrill. The g-forces were crazy enough I couldn't ride it twice in a row without the risk of blacking out, lol. It's not just the ride but also the iconic roar that would echo throughout the park that I'll miss. I'll miss having an extreme coaster that isn't less than a 1000 miles from home. I'll miss the countless hours of watching it run over and over again from the bridge that went through the loops. I'll miss convincing my friends to ride it with me when they insisted they were too scared. I'll miss making new memories with the coaster that's always been there for me... Sure roller coasters are inanimate objects but The Mindbender gave me so many emotions over the years. For me saying goodbye means letting go of something I Love. Saying goodbye hurts. Thank you my friend for so many memories, fun times, and thrills we shared together, you will be missed. 💔"

Mind bender brings a scariness and intensity (it's rough for sure) that is unrivaled with anything else in Canada (I've yet to visit major parks in USA). Because it's soo enclosed, the sound is very intense, and the fact that it isn't smooth, it feels far more alive. Definitily memorable compared to the smooth butter experience of B&M.

But I promised to myself one day I will the get chance and build up the courage to ride this. Butttttt that will never happen now. And it genuinely sucks too since a lot of my friends think this is the focal point of the park. Without it, there are just all these side attractions left over. they're all still fun, but they don't hit the same notes the mindbender could. Even on looking at it when it was around going through those triple loops must've felt amazing. Now its slowly turning into Hasbro world. Mannn :/

I'm not going to ignore the issues it had to deal with tho. This coaster had a lot of maintenace issues, it suffered during the pandemic. attraction parts were getting old losing paint and rusty. Nothing lasts forever, it had to be demolished someday. But I never thought it'd be this early. It might've been risky. But Disney World held final rides for Splash Mountain before its closing. Imagine something like that for this coaster.

I really hope they put something in similar to the American dream mall. Like a tmnt shellraiser type of coaster, or even better a coaster just like Sandy's Blasting Bronco. They have the space. I think it would be very dumb not to replace it with another thrilling coaster. They already have the orbiter for families. A coaster like Sandy's Blasting Bronco would be perfect as it would leave room for even more rides. But I'm guessing it will be something lame. Havoc ran for 3 years and has been shut down the past 8 months for "maintenance". Wouldn't be surprised if they announce the removal of havoc. I hope not, it's a fairly new ride, and was sponsored by Hasbro.

We see that the whole amusement park industry is now focused on families and children. Disney's exorbitant profits are just too tempting. More profit with lower costs and investments at the same time, since kiddyrides are usually much cheaper, are very tempting. It is therefore not surprising that Galaxyland, Six Flags and now also Universal with their new Kiddypark are realigning themselves in this direction. Of course, for older guests than children or enthusiasts, this is bad news and a great loss. But it seems that you can no longer make as much money with these target groups or that you can make significantly higher profits with families.

37 year old coaster in a northern Canadian mall. Not shocked they are taking it out. If they relocate great, but for them to not be able to keep up with refurb/maintenance costs is completely understandable. These parks need to turn a profit… they don’t exist for enthusiasts to have a good ride
