It wouldn´t be the largest birdge in the world. There are far far longer bridges across the world. Distance between Sicily and the rest of Italy is 3 to 4 km depending on where they would build it. The longest bridge in the world located in China is 165 kms long. 50 times longer than this comparatively tiny bridge would be. You can say that this bridge goes over land. Fair point. But there are still several 30km long bridges across the sea in China

This video has its merits, but it does state an obvious falsehood when it claims that Southern Italy and Sicily were "way richer" than the North up until modern times. It is completely false. Since the 11th century Northern Italy and Tuscany saw an exponetial economical growth when compared to the South. Cities like Milan, Venice, Genua, Florence, Pisa and Bologna become way richer and more populated than any other city in the south. Even smaller Lombard towns such as Brescia and Cremona had around 40.000 inhabitants in the 14th century, while Rome and Naples had no more than 30.000.

Great video. The only point I'd have like to be clarified is that while most Italian immigrants to North America were from South Italy, most Italians who moved to South America were from the North of Italy. There are even linguistic pockets in South America with versions of some Northern languages (eg Piedmontese). It is also important to note that dialects differ greatly not just between each other but also in their own area, as someone from my town and someone from Naples would sound quite different, despite using a similar registry and the same grammar (as we also speak a version of the Neapolitan language). Also, fun fact, there are super small linguistic pockets of foreign languages in several parts of Italy, like Catalan in Alghero, Francoprovencal in the North East of Italy and in two towns in Apulia, old versions of Greek and Albanian scattered throughout some Southern regions, and more.

A very informative and well reseched video. One thing that I wanted to add is that modern italian was actually "invented" by one our greatest minds Alessando Manzoni. He recived the offical job to make the new italian from the government, and it's thanks to it's masterpice "I promessi sposi" (Bride and Groom to be) that the language started to spread. This book tells the tail of Renzo and Lucia, 2 young lovers that want to get married. But at just hours from the wedding they discover that the local lord, Don Rodrigo, wants Lucia for himself. This forces the two of them apart and it's only after two long years, in which they survived many missadventures, than they are finaly able to get married. It's considered the "The peopole's novel" since it was writen to appeal to every layer of society.

Kinda correct. In 1861 a Piedmontese politician, Massimo d'Azeglio, said "Fatta l'Italia, dobbiamo fare gli italiani", which can be translated into something like "We've achieved Italy, but we got to achieve now Italians". After 160 years we're kinda melted quite well, but dialects are fading very slowly, and an Italian speaker (like me) can easily distinguish dozens of different accents. Also Medieval and Modern era's rivalries between cities are enduring still today😂😂

It was not really about geography, but about foreing powers meddling between themselves and trying to size the richness of Italy. After the Ostrogoths were defeated, the last true kingdom of Italy until 1861, and the ephemeral Byzantine occupation, the Lombards took over, but the endless fight with the Byzantines all across Italy and the Franks (often paid by the formers) made impossible to size the Gothic territory with secure borders. The Papacy played the Franks, and was able to retain power over it's territory until 1856, with Rome only falling in 1870. All across the middle age, the history of Italy was meddled by the HRE and France, with sudden raids and disruptions of the local authority in the north. In the south, with the Papacy acting as a Barrier between the two Italies, the Spanish and the French were fighting up and down the 2 Siciliies kingdon, after the Pope was able to wrestle it out of control of the Norman Heirs. As Manfred died, there was no more rulers coming from an Italian dynasty. Even in the XIX Napoleon III was still playing his game with Franz Joseph, gouging good chunks of Savoy in exchange for promises of help he was never willing to fully fulfil. After the battle of Custoza, Napoleon signed a peace treaty with Austria without even consulting the Savoy ally Despite keeping for France Nice and the Savoy. He also proceeded to block the Unification of Italy up to 1970 when he was kicked out by Bismark, showing how he never cared for Italy at all. In the end geography was not a real factor, as it was not during the Gothic rulership. the inability to Get Rome under the Kingdom proved to be the real Political problem, both in 756 AD as in 1870.

Southern Italy was NOT richer than Northern Italy in the Middle Ages. That is completely false. Only for a brief period, Sicily under Arabian rule (8th century) was richer than the rest of the states of the peninsula, but since the 11th century Northern Italy and Tuscany started to get much richer than the south. It is a fact that cities like Milan, Venice, Genua, Florence, Pisa and Bologna were all way richer and more populated than any other city in the south, including Naples, Palermo and Rome.

Important to recall the regional divides you mention make Italian-American descendants praising Italian nationalism very ironic. My Grandma's parents were said to have REFUSED to call themselves Italian. They were American first and Marshe second. Sounds like their parents may have hated Geribaldi too.

yeah bro but don't speak of southern Italy like it's the bronx. It's a reality only in certain quarters in the major cities, and they usually don't touch tourists. Rome and Milan are probably more dangerous than most southern cities.
