📍 The Woman Who Flew Us Beyond the Rainbow: The Story of Judy Garland and her relationship with Mickey Rooney
One of Hollywood’s brightest stars loved dogs and the yellow rose. Even though he was literally born on stage, he was terribly afraid of acting.
Like many celebrities, she studied at Hollywood High School in Los Angeles, Judy went to high school with her future colleague and good friend, Mickey Rooney, among others. John F. Kennedy Jr. also liked him very much and often called him to sing something to him: of course, he most often asked for the song “Somewhere over the rainbow”.
Mickey Rooney, the best-known American children's actor. An important milestone in his career in 1937 was the shaping of the sympathetic teenager, Andy Hardy, in Family Business, bringing the character to life in twenty sequels until 1956, following an unexpected success for the film studio. In one of the first pieces in the series, he appeared for the first time in 1938 with another big child film star of the age, Judy Garland, with whom he became friends in real life and shot several highly successful music and dance films.

Sadly, it still happens. We hear horror stories of these kids as they grow into adulthood from every generation following Mickey and Judy. The themes of parents exploiting them by robbing them of a childhood to robbing them financially continues to this day. Child sexual abuse is rampant in Hollywood and drug dependence becomes a way to cope with the trauma they suffer.

In those days, it was rare for a male and female who had any professional equality to become husband and wife. A male movie star of the era like Mickey wanted a trophy wife who was beautiful eye and arm-candy, and inferior to him in status and experience, not another headliner musical comedy performer who was his match at the box office. In any event, just because people work together, and may even be friendly, it doesn't mean they should be married, whether or not they are performers.

Crazy background. A bisexual father who alledgedly had sex with kids, but that she loved anyway and left her early in her life. An exploiting, jealous, greedy, nasty mother who had not her best interests at heart. And then a career with sob mayer and the whirlwind life style who goes with it. It was hard to break Wayne from what her body was used to for years...the drugs. Several failed relationships. All that took a toll on her mental health. But what a talent, what a career, a sweet sensitive resilient heart.

She even asked her friends if her dad was gay & they wouldn't give her a straight up answer one friend told her no he wasn't gay "Ok I guess the word bisexual was taboo to say back then." They didn't tell her the truth because they felt it would've sent her spiraling downward or the truth would've killed her sooner. The truth that her father preferred boys over girls would've shattered Judy's image of who her father was & lets not forget her parents were trying to abort her. Oh man that would've really done her in good thing she never learned about that.

Today Louie B Mayer would be put in jail for what he did to those kids. I know this was before the big "drugs are bad" realization but he had to know he was ruining those kids lives. Judy suffered with the results all her life. It was all selfish and for money. But he could have done things differently and the results would have been the same. He would have continued to make great popular movies with these two despite feeding them drugs and controlling their lives. That studio system was a mixed bag because studios could pigeonhole careers but as long as they kept making money making films, they were riding high, otherwise they were blackballed and washed up. Today actors control their own careers.

The entire industry was toxic. Toxic doesn't even begin to cover the depth of dehumanization that early Hollywood produced. Poor kids never had a chance. There never was huge amounts of money but the whole town knew how to fake/bedazzle it and sell the glow in the aftermarket. Movies today have lost the shine. I doubt it'll ever polish up like the 40s and 50s. The poor 'stars' went through the meat grinder and there's not even a stain left. There's no rewrite either, once that genie is out of the bottle no amount of magic can ever funnel the rizz back to the first screen test. All we can do is watch the old Nitrate rust and dream of 'the good ol' days'.

Thats sad because she was so pretty when she was young, But somewhere along the line he l seem to be drawn to the glamorous girls. Judy had that girl next door allure that I guess was not his thing, It's like" who do u like... Ginger or Mary Ann".... guess MIckey would pick Ginger.

@@lilacsunshine3044 Rita Hayworth was suppose to have the all American Girl Next Door appeal too but she because of her Spanish heritage she had that more exotic look. Despite her hairline was more heightened, hair dyed red from its original dark color she was still very beautiful & glamorous Mickey would've made a play for her too.

@@catspaw3092 I see pictures of JG as she played Dorthy and she to me was a beauty, Those big eyes and pretty hair,I just don't get it why she was supposed to be so ugly or fat...There are two other stars that suffered from trying in my opinion to live up to the glamour culture, Karen Carpenter and Britney Murphy, ...Bith lovely and adorable in their own right, But it seems the need to be ' seen as glamour girls " and every man's fantasy may have prayed into how they died eventually, Sometimes a square has its own appeal and it can destroy itself trying to get into that round hole.

First off Mickey hated being so short. He needed to bolster his ego by dating all the most exotic and beautiful women in Hollywood. Judy was a girl that he met when they were kids and basically grew up with. They were each other's support through the hell of movie making and Meyer's interference in their lives. It wasn't just that their fathers had been alcoholics and abusive to their wives and families but their mothers loved the attention and money. They would never have allowed either one of them to quit show business or say no to what Meyer wanted them to do. Both were incredibly talented in a variety of ways and loved to perform. They were wonderful with their fans in a way that today's present celebrities hardly understand. Sometimes people no matter what sex just 'click' like they had been friends in another life. I worked with a man (who was happily married with kids) and he and I were really good friends. No sex, no romance just like having another brother. Lots of laughs and support in a very stressful work environment. People say that men and women can't just be friends. It is not true. Sadly for me my friend had a nervous breakdown, ended up in the hospital and he and his family moved back East. I have heard from other people who have seen him that he is not well even now. We don't communicate and even though it has been years since I have seen him I still miss him and wish him well. I am sure that is what it was like for Mickey and Judy. May they both RIP.

His height kept him from becoming a leading man had he been taller he would've had no problem being considered in league with Cary Grant, Montgomery Clift or Humphrey Bogart. Even if he was taller I go for Grant or Clift hands down just my preference.

I heard she had feelings for him but he didn't feel the same about her he preferred more beautiful women like Ava Gardner whom he ended up marrying then I hear she wasn't interested in him romantically. Even if they had married each other both Judy & Mickey were under the influence of drugs & alcohol those dangerous substances would've destroyed their marriage & relationship. I think Judy had it worse than Mickey because she was hooked on drugs from the time she was little thanks to her mum & the studio made it worse when she got older.
