The game I’m active in is a bit of an odd case for glitches, Gunman Clive. As far as we know there is only only one known “Glitch” in the game, a Wrong Warp to go straight to the final boss, cutting out 90% of the run. In terms of categories, we had a Seperate no wrong warp and wrong warp categories, but no one plays the wrong warp category since it is just so boring and no one played it and the leaderboard was left empty. So the current state of the leaderboard is officially all glitches allowed but we use the honour system of “Don’t wrong warp and force us to split it into a new category with 2 runs total in it”

You could do a similar video on any% vs 100%. Some games, 100% is more popular because any% is barely any different, some it's 1hr vs 20 hr to run. Really cool stuff!

The ending was really the most important takeaway from this video for me: *There are no authorities that can tell you how to run a game. Just do whatever you want.* The developers and random commenters don't like that you're not playing the "intended" way? Screw them. The community and SRC leaderboards don't like that you're not quite following the standard rules? Screw them. Create your own bullshit arbitrary category. Create your own independent google spreadshet leaderboard with just your name on it. Call yourself a "world record holder" by uncontested deafult and be technically correct. Maybe nobody follows you, maybe nobody sees you, maybe nobody respects you. Why should you care? All you wanna do is go fast. Great video, friend. I missed your style of content and way of approaching the idiosyncrasies of this community. Keep up the great work. Here's to seeing more of you in the future.

This is AMAZING. Both of your videos have been two of the most thoughtful I've watched on speedrunning. Thank you! Keep it up!

Very nice video! The question of legitimacy of glitches, or what accounts for a "real" speedrun, often brings pretty messy discussions and lots of uninformed opinions, and having a nuanced video trying to bring in many different perspectives was really cool. As an addition to Sonic Adventure, the reason there's no glitchless category is not just cause we just like it that way, similarly to Mirror's Edge it's also an issue of fuzzy definitions and not knowing where to draw the line of what counts as a glitch or intended gameplay. There have been ocassionally new runners asking for these categories, but due to the nature of the game, you can't really make a clear case of what glitchless would mean. All the glitchy looking level skips are basically just based on the standard movement tech, and many of the levels are pretty open, which makes it arbitrary to decide where the intended boundaries are. Because the game doesnt naturally lend itself to making a split we just never did, rather than forcing ourselves into endless discussions about things you cant find a clear answer for.

Any% No SQWWOOB is my new favorite category name. Reminds me of Skyward Sword's "reverse back in time magic" glitch

ALttP now has the "Restricted Major Glitches" section of their leaderboard, but they used to list those banned glitches individually, so "Any% RMG" used to be called "Any% No EG/DG/WW".

Really quality video! The scrip was really well developed. If i had one recommendation the background music could toned down slightly.

I like how at the end he was said there is no limit to how far you can take it, while showing smb1 in the background which is nearing the human limits, still not there but probably the most optimized speed game. neat video tho

>How Glitched is Too Glitched? I feel like the conclusion while interesting (and in my opinion correct) misses one viewpoint, if a speedrun is reduced to its purest expression, aka beat a game as fast as possible, then there really isn't such a thing as too glitched.

Is there really no category for SA that doesn't involve no glitches? I mean the game has series issues but, I just assumed, there would be a run out there where deliberate clipping isn't tolerated.
@Skyehoppers4 жыл бұрын
Nope it doesn't and I checked with the game's speedrun community to make sure. What someone said is that when you really try to figure out what is and isn't an intended route through the levels it gets really fuzzy and hard to define, so I think that's the main reason. And Sonic is already meant to be played really fast so speedrunning it without glitches may not offer as much of a new experience as in other games.
@AFriendRemembers4 жыл бұрын
@@Skyehoppers oh I completely agree its such a grey area. I mean they put a life box on top of one of the skyscrapers at speed highway that can only be reached by spindashing off the route and flying directly up the side of the building. But I would argue that there is a difference between shooting yourself off an edge and finding hidden platforms (something that exists in the 2d sonic games, particularly the game gear ones which are obtuse as hell) to clipping through walls. But as I said, if I accept the first but not the second it's incredibly vague exactly where the line should be drawn.
