Hi Alison - 5:42 Those eight notes remind me of the eight iconic notes that comedian, actor and violinist Jack Benny popularized and immortalized on his radio and TV programs. They’re as follows in the first position: G, B, D, C, B, C, A, B and then he would repeat them again from the beginning, and end on the A. And as all fans of Jack Benny know, his signature tune was “Love in Bloom” from 1934 words and music by Leo Robin and Ralph Rainger. BTW: It was Jack Benny who inspired me to learn to play the violin. 😉 🎻 ♫

Hi Allison! I have a quick question regarding bows and violins in general. How exactly am I supposed to pack a violin for air travel and is it safe to ship a violin overseas or do I run the risk of damaging it? Thank you! Love the channel!
@firerycobra61644 жыл бұрын
Um... I don't really know for I have never actually brought my violin overseas as it's really too expensive, but I think it would be safe as long as you be careful when handling it, and try not to take it out of the case unnecessarily, as there us the risk of someone bumping into you and breaking it. Just pack your violin, be careful with it and enjoy ur holiday.

thanks for the wonderful exercise. When I bow slowly, it makes a horrible scratching sound on the string. What could be the reason for that?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor4 жыл бұрын
Practise. You have to try and keep the bow consistent and moving. Keep at it. It wont happen on the first go.
@firerycobra61644 жыл бұрын
So basically u cannot press too hard. There are various preesure levels, like let's say on the g string, you find that if you press when you play, it sound grand and majestic and does not have scratchy sounds. However, if you do this on the E string it has the opposite reaction. The reason? The amount of pressure used. You have to experiment with the amount of pressure used in order not to have scratchy sounds. Sometimes you use no pressure, sometimes you use a lot. It depends. Hope this helped

Hello, Ms. Allison! I have a question about the bow. I have a Giuliani bow. When I am bowing, the middle of the bow is pressing on the the bow hairs and then bouncing/vibrating. Is that normal? Or does the tension of the bow need to be adjusted? I have a good bow hold (thanks to your videos 🙂). Any help will be appreciated. Thank you so much! I am really enjoying taking your violin course! 🙂 Have a wonderful day!
@TheOnlineViolinTutor Жыл бұрын
Might be the tension - there should be some curve in the bow - not too much, but not too little/straight. If it is bouncing then it sounds like a tension issue, or your pressure is not correct/consistent, or the bow does not suit you or your style.

Hi! I have a quick question about vibrato: so the tips of my left hand are now hard from playing so much but when I’m practicing vibrato my finger will slide on the string. I’m not sure if that makes sense. It’s mostly my first finger, it slides on the string when ever I’m trying to do vibrato. Do I have to press down harder or what should I do? Thanks!

Have long have you been playing the violin for?
@maya-mercury4 жыл бұрын
Since April of this year
@TheOnlineViolinTutor4 жыл бұрын
Too soon to be doing vibrato, way too soon - you are getting these issues, because you are attempting it too soon. There is nothing you will be learning right now that needs vibrato, and you will not have mastered the basics fully and let them sink in - everything should literally be second nature. It will take a good year before you should even think about vibrato, or you will come across more issues like the violin shaking.

I dont im afraid as it is not a good way to learn. It was fine for a video like that as a taster, but not when learning properly. Im assuming you have bought my '1-30 Violin Course' from my shop, so you will be learning how to read music and learning to play properly in no time.
@annhoney36284 жыл бұрын
Yes! actually, I do realize it is not a good way to learn. I still need to order your lesson books. I've been trying to learn notes. The issues I find myself with is figuring out which line they sit on or between. I know them but I have to stop with every note and say the letter of each line to figure out what it is. I am sure with practice and with those lesson books it should help. It's still hard to adjust your eyes to figure out what letter the note is on at such a quick pace.

I'm new at the violin and am trying to learn it. I've heard that you have to give your bow hairs a "bath" to help prevent rosin buildup on the hairs. Is this true and if so, how would you recommend doing it. Also, I'm fixing to be switching to a new rosin. The old that was given to me is very hard and I seem to have to apply it often in order to keep a better sound. Do I need to do anything special before applying the new rosin to my bow?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor4 жыл бұрын
I wouldnt 'bath' your your bow (whatever that is?) just play off the old rosin and apply the new. If your bow hairs are that bad, then you are not looking after it properly and you need to take it to a professional to clean or replace it.
@sharondavis83484 жыл бұрын
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor Just curious, what do you mean by my bow hairs being "that bad" and what I've been doing so far besides applying the rosin, is tightening the hairs when I practice and loosening them when I'm done. I've heard that helps preserve the life of the hairs. Is there anything else I need to do. I've gotten a book on care/maintenance of a violin and your videos have been very helpful. I've just gotten into this maybe 2 months or so ago so I'm very new at a stringed instrument. I played a saxophone when I was in n band in school, but that only helps when reading music. Your videos seem to be the most helpful on youtube.

Hi Alison, I am currently working on Swan Lake from your Lesson 19. I am allways struggling with the slurred bow in bar three. I just dont get how I make this one smooth because of the two second-finger notes (the F on the D-string and the C one the A-string). I really hope you can help me because I just cant figure this one out..
@TheOnlineViolinTutor4 жыл бұрын
Roll the finger - so when you know its coming up, sort of half place your finger over the next string so you can roll over. Lifting up will cause an open string sound.

It is hard for me to go up and down on one bowing let alone, It is very hard for me to do this???? Am I ready to be able to do this??? Also slurring notes on one string as in your lesson is very hard and sometimes scratchy. I can do it about 3 times out of ten at the most. I have just been able to slur notes on different open strings; that took me weeks to be able to do & sometimes it still sounds like a note inbetween. Would there be any music where you need to move the bow at a variety of speeds or is it a standard speed that you use for all songs?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor4 жыл бұрын
All pieces need and require this as all notes are played at different lengths. If you have a 4 beat note to play in a ver slow piece, then you need to slow down the bow to get that note to sound for the full length of time. Not only that, its more in depth than that as this actually gives you real control and manipulation over the bow - not just what you see on the surface with playing notes for longer. This si why I said it was 2-fold in the video.
@phoenix_doodler39044 жыл бұрын
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor so it's like singing with different tempos and notes that get drawn out, but with the violin?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor4 жыл бұрын
Yeah - its only to create a longer note that might last say 16 beats long, but also, you might want to phrase lots of notes in the same bow and you cant do that if you are drawing the bow to quick. So you might want to take a breath, then sing a whole verse in that same breath, but wont be able too if you take a short breath or release too quickly - you need control in the diaphragm - just like you need bow control.
