Alan Shearer is the top goal scorer in Premier League history. He broke so many individual records over his career and the majority of them still stand today, almost 2 decades since he retired.
Despite this, his trophy cabinet isn't as full as you would think. With that being said, how good was Alan Shearer, really?

Hmmm. I disagree. At the time United wanted to sign Shearer, the United squad were on £5,000 a week. Blackburn, financed by Jack Walker made Shearer the highest paid player by some margin on £12,000 a week. Back then that was immense. The average person's wages was £12,000. Then his £15 million move to Newcastle was a record amount for the time. Shearer went for the money.

@@maratonlegendelenemirei3352 A heck of a lot more. For example, before his injuries he was far quicker, he scored over 30 goals without fail every season. When he lost that pace, he bulked up and became a big centre forward who played others in, but still had enough about him to put 20 or 25 away every season without fail. I believe had he been lucky with injuries it would have been more like 350 EPL goals instead of 260. Had he joined Man United and been injury free, who knows it could have been 400 or more. I don't think you can measure someone solely on their medals but they certainly should be considered. Some players, and I'm necessarily saying Shearer but some can't hack being a small piece of a big jigsaw and need to be Number 1 at a club. Think about Zlatan at Barca or Gourcuff when he got his big moves, even Hazard at Madrid more recently. So by not taking the big move Shearer in some ways took the easy option. But in others he has to be credited for scoring so many with an average Newcastle team.

@@kevinmcgee373 I agree to an extent that medals should be considered yet all we hear is "Shearer could have won more if he didnt stay at Newcastle" and while that's true there is players that have never even got the chance to lift the trophy at all (Shearer did with Blackburn) but there are players such as Gerrard, Carragher, Gascoigne, Kane, Bale etc. Also there's players who are considered amongst the greatest of all time such as Zlatan, R9, Buffon, Cannavaro, Ballack, Nedved and probably plenty more that never won the Champions League. Yes some of them won their domestic titles but they were in the best sides. Shearer turned down the chance of being in the best side and yet still became the highest scorer in the league.

@@brosephmcbrosephson2626 Not really sure what you're talking about as I said some players and not necessarily shearer couldn't hack the big time. However the only reason shearer is top scorer in the prem is because he played there for 14 seasons. i can think of 10 other players who if they had 14 seasons would have demolished his record. So in that sense he was slightly overrated. You must remember at newcastle everything was geared towards him whereas if he'd gone to united it wouldn't have been the case as ferguson played several different ways, not just down the wings and in to the box

What people tend to forget when they talk about the all time greats stats like trophies won, goals scored and assists are not what tells the entire story. Take for example formula 1, the reason why Michael Schumacher is seen as the GOAT is not strictly because of what he won or how much he won it's because he managed to turn Ferrari which was in a bad state into the most successful in Formula 1 history. The same can be said for Maradona with his time at Napoli which is really what makes him stand out as such a great. Sure Ronaldo and Messi are good, but they've only really played for top tier sides which doesn't compare to pulling entire teams to the top alongside you. With top class players like Iniesta and Xavi feeding you balls even your grandma or grandpa would net a good amount of goals.

As you touched upon, Shearer at Blackburn (and first year on Tyneside) was a different animal to the Shearer of later years. He was very similar to Harry Kane, ability wise, in that he could pass, he could read the game brilliantly, and you just knew, whenever he got the ball near the goal, it was going in. He also hit the ball harder than most players (Alex Ferguson once said Shearer hit it like he was trying to kill it). Think some of it is mindset, too. I can't think of any other Premier League player who seemed to enjoy scoring as much as Shearer did. It was great growing up, watching him wheel away, arm aloft, from the Gallowgate End after scoring yet another goal. So many times, he saved Newcastle from defeat. Sometimes see people questioning whether he was actually that good, or if he could play in the league now, but I have no doubt he could and would thrive. If he was playing at a team like City, imagine how many he'd have scored! Phenomenal player.

He also broke through the Real Madrid senior team at age 17 years. The amount of goals he scored whilst playing behind great strikers is truly remarkable, he was also highly creative too! Cheers!

I wouldn't change a thing. Everything worked out for ManUtd with keeping Cole and him partnering with Yorke and Solskjaer being top scorer in his first season 1996/97 and scoring 126 goals for the club including obviously the winner in the champions league final etc...Plus even if Shearer&Sheringham both played for ManUtd in 97/98 after Cantona retired, Shearer got that big injury at the start of that 97/98 season and ManUtd dominated the PL for years with the team they had which mostly had been together for a while because they didn't get Shearer. Shearer also won nothing in 10 years for Newcastle. ManUtd have no regrets and they shouldn't had any anyway it's not like they didn't try to get him but he chose Newcastle, fair enough. No problem.

i genuinely think that in modern day football he is underrated, largely because the internet is full of the opinions of 18 year old kids who never watched him play. You did a great job with the video but there's 2 things i think you should have played on more to highlight how good he was - 1. he didnt just snap his ACL, he had consistent issues with his knee following that and according to transfermarkt website he missed 473 days (65 games) during his career with just knee injuries - that's almost 2 seasons worth! 2. he also played for Newcastle during periods of highs and lows, in fact they were embroiled in relegation battles for a couple of seasons whilst he was there, so its not like this guy was playing for a consistently succesful club during his career like Aguero or Rooney (at Man u). The guy was a machine and would still be world class to this day, he was such a clever footballer and i don't think its an exaggeration to say he had one of the best right foots we've seen in football - his shot technique was unbelievable.

Q- How good was Alan Shearer? A- Quite simply, the best. Greatest of all time. Shearer had it all. Lethal finisher, great in the air and he also had a nasty side which all great players need. His stats speak for themselves and to do all this whilst suffering 2x ACL injuries is quite phenomenal. He actually scored 17 Premier league goals again my team Leeds United so I should hate him. (He also scored against us before PL existed) Only 1 major honour won. I’m sure there’ll be a nagging ‘what if’ with regards to any potential move to Man United. We’ll never know of course. Thanks for uploading. Very enjoyable to watch. The Messi, Ronaldo, Lewandowski joke made me laugh. 😆

Shearer was a goal machine. He could finish from range and up close. He was very competitive and tough and had great instincts in front of goal. He was lucky to have not been injured much and obviously he played many years in the PL. I think Henry, Suarez, Ronaldo and Salah are better as they can do more than finish. Shearer still deserves credit as the PL top scorer and he deserves credit for joining his local club over Man United. Before the PL era Ian Rush scored many more goals for Liverpool. Also, all time top scorer in a single season in English top flight was Dixie Dean who scored 60 goals in one season for Everton.

I support Middlesbrough and Alan Shearer was absolute quality. He scored all kinds of goals for every team he played for. The reason he only won one trophy is because he chose Newcastle over Man United. To be fair to Newcastle they were just as capable of winning the league at the time Shearer joined them. Newcastle were certainly the only team who looked like challenging United at that time. Winning something with his home town club would have meant more but unfortunately for him it never quite turned out like that

I was “unfortunate” to see Shearer score a hat trick against my team Tottenham at White Hart Lane for Blackburn when Shearer was in his prime, before he injured his knee again which lost him half a yard of pace. Even with his pace diminished, Shearer was still a prolific goal scorer.

Great video, but there's a chronological error at the 9m30s point. Just after mentioning Shearer's exploits at Euro 96, the 1996/97 league table is shown and a reference is made to Blackburn being "a sinking ship at this point" (The inference being that Shearer now wanted to move on)...However, Shearer had already signed with Newcastle well before the start of the 1996/97 season (July 30th 1996).

All I'll say about Shearer is, he could have played for England in the 1990s as a defender, midfielder, or striker - he was that talented ,and technically and physically gifted. He was usually one of the best passers, crossers and tacklers on the team - it wasn't just goals. Few strikers in history could just drift to the right wing, and cross the ball like David Beckham, which Shearer did virtually every game. People focus on the power and the goals, of course, but he was as technically gifted as Dennis Bergkemp. The only equivalent player I can think of is Ruud Gullit - who was also a physical monster, but had the talent to play any position
