Puyol was Barça embodied in a person. As a Catalan and Barça fan since literally always (I was born right next to the Camp Nou, in fact) you just can't imagine how much I miss Puyol, as much as getting chills all over my body just listening to this and watching his footage. He was THE CAPTAIN. Strong, a leader but always, always respectful towards everyone. The kind of man who always shakes hands at the end of the match. He was like a rugby player, on the pitch he was wild, aggressive (always towards the ball, never the players) and put his heart on there, but when the match was over he was the first to shake hand with the rivals wether he won or lost. In fact, he was so special that decided to retire when he was still "young". He could have been some more years at Barça as a sub or go to China, Qatar, USA... But he always had a thing clear: he wanted to play to win something that matters and there were only two clubs he wanted to play: Barça or AC Milan. Many people don't know this, but Puyol was a big, big fan of Maldini since he was young, and fell in love with Arrigo Sacchi's Milan. When Joan Laporta entered the club in 2003, the Barça economy was in shambles after years of terrible management by Nuñez and Gaspart, and the club was in red numbers. Puyol wanted to keep here, he was the captain, but knew about the situation. By then, AC Milan which was much greater than that Barça (with Maldini, Nesta, Shevchenko, Inzaghi, Dida, Cafu and so on) had interest in Puyol and even talked to Laporta to know if he was on sale. Puyol talked to Laporta and told him: "I want to triumph in Barça, I want to stay. But if the club needs that I leave to get money and recover, I'll do it, just please let it be to Milan, nowhere else." Laporta didn't want to sell him so he stayed, but he was loyal to the end even if that meant leaving his life club.

The best defender barca ever had is probably ronald koeman though he stayed only 4 seasons in barca. That guy was simply unreal on both sides of the field. 300 g/a for a defender is nothing short of a miracle, and he also had all the qualities necessary for being a great defender.

The greatest captain to ever step on the field. The only ones to come really close are probably Paolo Maldini and Javier Zanetti. Those are the real captains, no nonsense, no diving, no dirty tricks, no excuses, but just pure commitment and focus. Train hard, play hard, respect everyone and become a legend. Sad to say, but they don't make the gentleman pitch generals anymore.

Carles Puyol might be the single most underrated defender of all time, just due to the attacking players around him. Legit top 5 argument for all 3 of greatest defender, greatest captain and greatest Barca legend. Everyone talks about Messi, Iniesta, Xavi in the Pep Barca team, and rightfully so, but Puyol was the glue. Also listened to Napalm Death before every match. Man was intense as fuck.

Great video mate. Barca really does need someone like Puyol, that intelligent beast that plays for the badge, is a charismatic leader, an athletic wonder blessed with technical gifts and a peerless reading of the game. Hopefully one of our young defenders grows into that character or we sign someone. Cheers and thanks for the great work.

When he was a teenager, he tried out for Barcelona's youth team. He didn't have the technique of the other applicants, but his determination got him called to go the next day and continue with the tests, and the next, and the next, until he was hired. His father told him before starting the first day, "If they don't catch you because the other kids are better than you, there's no problem, but if they don't catch you because you haven't tried your best, don't come back home."
