Yes. I still hold up the big offensive performers of the 1990s and prior on a higher pedestal than now. In those days defenders were allowed to defend. Today? You look at a QB wrong and you're penalized. On the flip side to that same coin, because it's so hard to play defense now with the rules against them, elite defenses of today deserve a lot of praise.

Absolutely. Nowadays there are really no stand out defensive players compared to the previous Era. There were actually demons on the defensive side of the ball that people were terrified to play against. Just one of many LT wouldn't even be able to play nowadays with all the pity pat bs calls. It was definitely a tougher league and honestly more captivating. I understand all the rule changes for player safety and what not, but you can't help to not miss those great days of football.

How were seasons shorter during Rice's career, outside of the 17th game added in 2021? Now, there was no bye week until 1990, which lengthened the season with time off. The 16-game schedule started in 1978, and reduced preseason games to four (there had been as many as six in the past).

There are still some guys on defense that could and would put guys flat on their asses, but the league doesnt allow it anymore. When targeting became a penalty, with suspensions and/or fines essentially mandatory.... one of the greatest parts of football died. 💯🙁

Before him there existed an mythical Receiver named Don Hutson of the Green Bay Packers. Hutson was the Randy Moss of his era. He ran a 10.4 Second 100M dash in full uniform, 9.4 second 100 yd dash in cleats, and stood at 6-2 & 200 lbs. IN THE 1940's! His 1942 Season was one for the ages... Lead the League in pretty much everything. His 1211 Yards in 11 games and 17 TD stand out. Even Today, he's be an NFL starter. He'd be no Justin Jefferson, but he'd still be good. Mabe like Adam Thielen was. "There is a guy in San Francisco now who will retire with all the records by the time he's done. He's the best pass catcher I've ever seen since I played" Don Hutson in an interview 1987

The people who say that are wrong. Ladanian Tomlinson is the best player ever, regardless of position. Jerry Rice can't run, block or throw better than L.T. The only thing Jerry Rice was better at than L.T. was catching footballs, and not by that much tbh. L.T. caught 100 balls as an RB. That's an elite receiver at 100 balls. L.T. scored 16.9 T.D.s per Season to Rices 12.3. L.T. holds the record for the most T.D.s in a season and the most rushing T.D.s in a season. He won MVP at the RB position. He is top 10 in receiving yards from an RB, receptions from an RB, receiving T.D.s by an RB, rushing yards, rushing T.D.s, total yards and is 3rd all time in T.D.s. He is a top 5 blocker at RB, and he is one of the most elite passers in the Hall Of Fame. Jerry can't do 33% of what L.T. could. 3rd all time in TDs, only Smith and Rice ahead of him and it took them both TWO times the seasons as L.T. to do it. L.T. is in fact the best all around NFL player ever and 2nd isn't close. Most prolific scorer in NFL history.

I met Jerry at an autograph signing convention in Santa Clara. My ticket was for him to just sign my helmet but he chatted me up, mentioned my height, I'm 6'7, shook my hand and took his picture with me after he signed my helmet. Pictures are a separate fee I didn't pay for but he didn't care. Seemed like a great dude.

When I was in the Air Force, I could have met Tiger Woods, but I was like, what for. He's really good at hitting a ball in a gopher hole, BFD. Turns out he was a POS who cheated on his wife and destroyed his families lives cause he couldn't keep his dick in his pants, not to mention being a drug user and almost killing himself going over 80 MPH on a 40 MPH road risking the lives of all the people driving around him and people still think he walks on water because he's a great golfer. Younger people don't realize that WRs weren't protected and babied back then like they are today. There was no "Defenseless receiver BS" back then. When they went across the middle, they were fair game for the head hunters. I seen Rice take many shots that would have ended some of todays babies careers. Not only take the shot but bounce right up and run back to the huddle, not limp or wave himself out. He would run back to the huddle and do it again. The man is a LEGEND-by far the GOAT of Wrs

Before we completely unload on today's receivers, we need to remember that most of today's players, most importantly receivers, have sacrificed padding in the quest for speed. That's why receivers and DB's of the 80's and 90's wore heavier and bulkier pads than lineman and linebackers do today

@@jim2lane Watch some tape. Especially Jerrys. They (WRs) didn't wear "heavier" pads than todays. It looks like it a little because WRs Don't have as long a sleeves is all. Back then they would sometimes roll them up and tuck them some but faced a fine. It's mainly the jerseys that were/are different (and makes it look like heavier padding). Back in 70s, yes, heavier pads but not in Jerrys prime (90s). Safties literally called themselves "headhunters" because they were allowed to blow up WRs back then. Going over the middle was dangerous and very hard because u knew u were going to get blown up but Jerry was fearless. How he just bounced right up after getting smashed like I seen him get smashed still blows me away to this day. Todays WRs couldn't handle that.

Jerry Rice is one of the few Receivers to ever get a share of the MVP award. He is the only 3 Receivers to get Superbowl MVP award, and the only one to post so many dominant seasons. He's the only one to have a 20 year career, and to be effective at the end of that career. He's one of the few players to ever make a pro-bowl at 40 years old. He is the GOAT NFL player, and always will be. Think about this, if any are in doubt: Jerry Put up numbers that would be impressive today, in the 1980's....under old skool NFL defense happy rules. Yeah! That's right! 5-10 yard jamming zones off the line were legal, hard to get separation like that. Defensive holding and pass interference were called far less often. You had to be blatantly holding someone to get called back then, not this ticky tack stuff today. And if you put Today's top guys back in Rice's Heyday, their numbers would go way, way down!

@@Rileyed there are two instances that I can recall of somebody not named Jerry Rice taking over a game that mattered, from the receiver position. The entire 2008 playoffs was the Larry Fitzgerald show. He darn near scored the game-winning touchdown in the super bowl versus the Steelers. He took over another game in 2015 as an old guy vs Packers. For the regular-season it's either Megatron or Moss. But the playoff beast had to be Fitzgerald. What Jerry Rice has on both of those guys is doing at pro bowl level for longer. It's insane how long he kept going.

I lived in the Bay Area through all of this. He was one of my heros. I was so happy to watch the great 49er players like Jerry Rice, Joe Montana and Steve Young. I also recorded all the Super Bowl games and replayed them hundreds of times. I once even met Dwight Clark in a grocery store and he was nice enough to talk to me for about 5 min. The famous CATCH in the Dallas play-off game was most important part of the discussion and I recorded the game when it happened as well as the first super bowl which that game win, put them in. What great memories.

I grew up a niner fan in the 80's and loved watching Rice play. I never thought he would slow down, he didnt seem to be human until Sapp hurt him in the 97 opener. He definitely wasnt the same again, although he had a couple of good years for Oakland. Honestly, the only WR that couldve broken his records was Moss, but he didnt have nearly the discipline and drive that Rice had.

The Raiders lost that sb by not throwing to Rice till the fourth quarter. Nobody could guard him. His ability to grab the ball and be under control was uncanny to watch. He pretty much was the first guy I ever saw catching 5 yard slants and taking it to the house on a weekly basis. I'll never forget when he broke Jim Brown's Touchdown record by scoring on an End around run. That was so fitting you knew this guy was the GOAT. Was a great time for 49ers fans.

Watching highlights of Rice and Moss play on TV were some of the best training sessions. Rice was a little before my time but I remember watching his highlights and always being impressed by both him and his work ethic

That's what always put me in awe of Rice, the fact that RB's touch the ball 3 to 4 times more that a receiver yet Jerry has more TD's than any RB in history. Before Moss and Owens, 8 of the top 10 players with the most TD's were RB's.

Rice was better.

If you took his stats from the backups and we won't count Young when he was Montana's backup the QBs he had over 24 games were Grbac (9), Kemp (6), Bono (6), Moroski (2) and Cavanugh (1). In exactly a year and a half's worth of games, Rice caught 134 passes for 2,177 yards and 23 TDs, and ran for one score as well. That's an average season of 89 catches, 1451 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns, or roughly the career best season for nearly every WR who has ever played the game.

Peak Lyn Swann and John Jefferson were more athletic and spectacular, but Jerry was just so precise and In amazing aerobic condition. DBs would be gassed by the 3rd quarter. Rice just worked harder than anyone he competed against, and the results showed.

Jerry Rice has more catches 1,549 than Moss and Jefferson combined 1,326. What's interesting is when Rice played for the Raiders, Rich Gannon has his most completions/yards, wins MVP and they make a trip to the Super Bowl. Coincidence? Randy Moss had the Hail Mary called more than probably anybody but he still doesn't have as many 50+ yard TDs as Rice and Rice was also catching those bombs from guys like Jeff Kemp, Harry Syndey (a RB), Elvis Grbac & Jeff Garcia. Actually, JR has more 30+/60+/80+ TDs than Moss and wasn't scared to go over the middle. The initial post mentioned rushing TDs too which most people seem to forget about. Rice was a better rushing WR and one of the best all time at that.

It was an era when a QB season was spectacular with 3000 passing yards. Defenders like Lawrence Taylor and Ronnie Lott smashed you without rules favoring offenses. This man was in his 40s and still produce 1000 yards on a SuperBowl run with the Raiders. He didn't have the god given talent a Megatron or Moss had, but he had the best work ethic.
