IMO, the greatest part of Jim Brown's career is that he smart enough to quit while he was still on top. Rocky Marciano was a boxing parallel of an athlete who was smart enough to quit while was on top. They called Muhammed Ali "The Greatest" but that only possibly applies to the early part of his career, because it was sad and pathetic the way he ended his badly overextended career. Jim Brown never became the Narcissistic Egomaniac that other pro athletes became after him. He was a humble "working stiff" who saw Football as just a job. He had a "pride in workmanship" that is very rare today in any kind of job. Jim Brown was a Great Football Player, but he was even a Greater Human Being.

I'am not taking anything away from Marciano, but 49-0 means less than you think; there were a number of his fights, where he was behind but wore 10 year older opponets down, I give more credit to his management. He was to small to stand in front of Liston-Frazier-Foreman....If fighters fought toe to toe, in a small ring, no dancing & running NO ONE WOULD HAVE BEAT SONNY LISTON (when I say that I mean he wins 9 of 10, if not all 10 fights) with the exception of Foreman. Ali never really beat Liston (the Musliums would have killed him) Same thing with Forman, he was drugged the day of the fight; nobody in the Ali camp thought he could win. So they took it to Africa; then stalled the fight, physicing Foreman up; then spiked this drinking water at ringside. He was sacrificing his life, by trying his drugged up best, but is lucky he lost; or he would have never got out of there alive. Up through 1975 or so if they fought, not run, the best heavyweights were 1. Sonny Liston (5-6 years older than listed) 2. George Forman 3. Joe Frazier All three would have owned Tyson If you want to see what Liston's 84 inch reach would have done to Tyson...look at the Tyson Lennox Lewis fight on You Tube

@@dme1016 Using your argument, Payton's competition WAS considerably better than Brown's, but the league improved more still in training, conditioning, and the overall power and speed in the 90s when Barry Sanders played. Throw in that Sanders got 5.0 to Payton's 4.4 ypc, which is huge. Now consider that Sanders is the all-time most in negative yardage, yet still got much more per carry than Payton, arguably the 2nd best of all time. I mention the negative yardage also to demonstrate that Sanders had mediocre at best, but mostly bad, 5-man lines to run behind, no tight ends, no pro bowl fullback to help. Since the Lions never had a decent QB, defenses keyed on him, and OFTEN had men in the backfield before Sanders could get going. Also Sanders fumbled way less. Loved Payton, really admired his durability and ability, but Sanders was simply better. The eye test bears(🐻) this out also.

The top 2 RBs of all time IMO are Jim Brown and Barry Sanders. Jim Brown dominated in his 8-year career like no other RB ever has. So, he told Modell to stick it and went off to Hollywood to be an actor, and was good at it to.😃 I enjoyed watching his movies, westerns like "100 Rifles" with the beautiful Raquel Welch. Smh😃 But Mr. Brown was without a doubt the best RB I saw and they have been many great RBs in the NFL. Mr. Brown had that great combination of size and speed that the experts look for in a great RB, he was exceptional for that time period back then. You just didn't see many big RBs in that era that could run like that, that fast and everything. He would stand out in today's game and his size would too because he was 6'1 or 6'2 with 240 pounds of all muscle from head to feet, he had a really low body fat percentage meaning his body was all muscle like a Superman.😃 QBs just handed the ball off to him and just got out of his way as he burst through the OLine and run over whoever was in his way and off and running towards the endzone for TDs.😁 The man was truly 1 of a kind! God bless him and may he rest in eternal peace! Thank you Mr. Brown for all you then done for humanity! Amen! ❤🙏

Grew up in Ohio and saw Jim Brown play. He was and is the single greatest football player of all time. It blatant racism from sports writers that denied him the Heisman Trophy. For those of you whose football memories of pro football go back a couple of decades or less here are some facts that might help you understand how great this man was on the football field; no artificial turf back then. Many games were played in stadiums with baseball fields. When it rained the fields turned into mud quagmires, footing was impossible and uniforms became caked with mud. And he still averaged over 100 yards per game. Defenses were geared to stop the run back then. Passing games were very difficult because defenders could bump and push receivers until the QB released the ball. Today you can’t lay hands on the receivers hence higher scoring games. There were far fewer teams back so quality of the defenders was high. Today with 32 teams their is a dilution of top level talent. I read some of the comments regarding he was running against 180 white guys. Moronic statement. The league was more integrated than you think. Offensive and defensive lines averaged out at about 250 pounds with many players well over 260 pounds. Most linebackers were were 220 pounds for outside backers middle linebackers weighing 230 pounds or more. The greatest and most ridiculous argument I always hear is : if he we playing today he wouldn’t be able to compete against the modern players. I say bullshit. If he was in his prime today and he would even bigger and faster than he was 60 years ago. He would had the advantages of better diet, year round training by professionals at an early age. Back in Brown’s day there was no year round training schedule. Because salaries were generally low the vast majority of players had second jobs to make ends meet for their families. The Hall of Fame linebacker Sam Huff for the NY Giants football team worked at his friends father grocery store in the off season. Another Hall of Fame player, tackle Bob St. Clair worked for a trucking company in off season. Finally the fabulous QB Johnny Unitas worked as a Tile setter early in his career. There is also very little film of Jim Brown. Video tape didn’t exist back then. Today you see players taped every game from 15 angles and idiot network announcers proclaiming every player is great. Just remember these facts: led the league in rushing 8 out 9 years. No other runner has accomplished that. Averaged 5.2 per carry over his career, no one has done that since. Many times league MVP. Never missed a game in 9 years as a running back. Never will even happen today. Not only the greatest football player of all time, but the greatest american athlete of all time. Considered greatest collegiate lacrosse player ever. Finished 5th in the decathlon in the Olympic Trials. Star basket ball and track star at Syracuse. A star in any sport he played.

I wouldn't say he couldn't compete in today's NFL, he'd still be great, just not a dominant. Like you said, guys today have access to the best in healthy lifestyle and training, so I think the defenses he would face today would be better despite there being more teams now. Because if the crap pay in his day, many people who were great athletes may have stopped playing football after high school or college simply because they had a chance at making more $ in a different occupation. Today almost no one is gonna decide against a career in the NFL if they could because they have a better financial opportunity getting a degree in whatever. There's plenty of other differences in the NFL of today versus that of decades ago. I think if he played today he'd be very similar to Derrick Henry, still fantastic but just not as much like playing a video game with cheat codes turned on.
