As a player top 15 ish... but was maybe the most important player in history...he carried the league to the magic-Larry era bringing the TV veiwer ship with him...he was easily the most well know , well respected, and popular of the day...and then there was the grace and uncomparable CLASS...

ABA played NBA players 155 times. ABA Led the the series 79 to 76 through 5 seasons. Dr J was told to sacrifice some of his scoring during his early years in the NBA. Up until his 1981 MVP season, he was the best player in world.

These days if it didn't happen recently we forget how great something was we've lost respect for what came before. Dr j and those ABA players brought the high flying, 3 point shooting game to the NBA when the leagues merged . Let's give these old heads their flowers while they're still alive, RESPECT 🙏 👏

Doug, the pass was by the great Moses Malone. Never forget, the front office asked him not to score because he shared a team with George Mcginnis, Doug Collins, and Lloyd World B. Free all-stars. They don't discuss Doc because the media focused on Magic VS. Bird. Doc was Magic's, Michaels', and Thomas idol. The NBA was crumbling and he was the guy who carried the league. Look at the data, he was the only player to ever sell out every arena he visited. He is ranked in my top 5 all-time.

His nick name was "Dr. J" because he was clinical in his technique. He was like a surgeon performing an operation. skilled and precise! And that says it all.

12:32. He was behind the backboard when he let go of the ball. Often considered the greatest single documented shot in basketball.

Dr. J is purposely left out of the conversation. The NBA and NBA players of his day are embarrassed because he was the only world wide basketball superstar when he played in the ABA. When he got to the NBA he became the superstar of that league. The first thing the then Sixers coach told him was that they didn't need him to score 30 points per game, so he burned his scoring. When Billy Cunningham took over as coach, Dr.J became the focal point of the #Sixers and his numbers went up considerably, even though he was past his prime. By that time the Lakers had Magic, Kareem and Worthy. Dr. J didn't hand anyone in the top 75. Between 1979-1982 he outscored Bird head to head 20 times to 10, and it wasn't closr. He went to the finals twice and lost to the Lakers. In 82/83 Moses Malone joined the team and became the focal point. The Sixers swept the Showtime Lakers for the NBA championship. Doc played 3 more seasons in which the Sixers added Charles Barkley. Doc was old and was basically the #3 option. As impressive as Doc's career numbers are,if the Sixers coach hadn't wasted his prime years, Doc's numbers would be even higher.

I rank Dr.J as the best SF of Alltime since I saw his whole ABA career plus NBA career. He was cat quick and could jump out the gym and was clutch. Average jump shot until clutch time then he came to life. Best shot blocker at SF in history!

Doc is in my top ten all time, and the second greatest small forward of all time. He dominated the ABA and won a MVP in the NBA.

Also I always account for aba stats and accolades. I hate that the nba doesn’t take them into account. Basketball reference and the hall of fame take both leagues into account but the nba ignores it. It’s makes no sense considering the nba owns the rights for both leagues, and a lot of former aba teams are now nba teams, like the spurs and nuggets. So why would the aba accolades not count? It’s weird. But I have him and kd fighting for that number 3 spot imo. So either 3 or 4 depending on how u feel about counting the ABA accolades.

the NBA hides the past, it's no good for business, at least they may think so. They doesn't like showing younger people that basketball and great players existed before Lebron and Curry, in some sort of way they probably think that fans nowadays would stop buying merchandise, tickets or pvp broadcasts just because these guys from the past were also talented and amazing to watch

Dr J is the GOAT hands down. LeBron has played four more seasons than Dr.J. Dr.J still has better stats per game and overall. He has better per game stats than Jordan and Bird.

Your generation missed a lot of great basketball. Julius was incomparable. Forget rankings, he was a complete human being and phenom on the court. He was asked NOT to score when he arrived in Philadelphia.

It’s simple. Most people consider the 70s the worst era of modern nba history because there weren’t many dysnasties during that era. The first half of the decade was split. Half of the best talent was in the aba and the other half was in the nba. So once wilts era of guys retired, basketball became less popular. Plus drugs and not having alot of marketable stars hurt both leagues. Even once the leagues fused together, the league became boring for a few years. Kareem was the best player run the game but he wasn’t marketable. He was a devout Muslim and black activist so the media hated him. But he was too good for anyone to surpass. Dr j could’ve serlassed him but the sixers couldn’t win titles. That’s like the equivalence of Tim Duncan being the best player In the league if Kobe, shaq, and lebron nem couldn’t win titles. Duncan is kind of boring to most people so you could imagine how hard it would be to sell entertainment with the best player in the game being boring to watch. A lot of elite players form the 70s don’t get talked about a lot and often get discredited because of the narrative about the 70s era. U never hear anything about Kareem, dr j, Moses Malone, George McGinnis, Dave bing, Walt Frazier, Dennis Johnson, Rick Barry, Dave cowens, artis Gilmore, bob mcadoo, bill Walton, bob Lanier, George gervin, etc.. all of these guys were monster players that just get lost to time because the media refuses to give them their flowers.

The Doctor the first to take flight have his own show made as movie and everyone wanted to be him on the court. Yes the sixers are left out the conversation to me Doc was my Jordan I have both his jersey s #32 #6 and those leather converse. Called Dr Js is what we wore they call him the Ambassadors of the league they don't count his stats in NBA which they should sixers lost 3 times in the finals before changing centers trading Dawkins and getting Moses Malone who shut down Jabbar and parish of the Celtics Doc waa jordan before Jordan Doc is number 1 small forward ra ked 8 th all time witb more than 30000 points Doc showed players like jordan how to fly
