I’m 70 years old. Dr. J is my all time favorite Basketball Player period. There’s a VHS tape on Julius Erving a must see showing him one on one it’s unbelievable how good he was in his prime. He also had a midrange and long range shooting ability. 🙏

53 here and Doc will always be my favorite athlete of all time. He was a beast on the court and a gentleman off. His impact was incredible for the NBA and is loved by all. Only time I got emotional to see any player retire in 86 at Milwaukee.

Julius "Dr. J" Erving was my idol as a kid in 1976. This man literally impacted my life as a human being. The way he carried himself on and off the court, he had style, grace, humility, and he was dominate on the court..... DOMINATE! He is, and always will be respected throughout the NBA community. And for the record....Bird and Magic didn't save the NBA..... The Doctor did when the ABA merged with the NBA.... facts. There was just alot of hype around Bird and Magic coming into the NBA.....Julius was already waiting on them.....

What makes THE LAYUP so special is that Doc picked the ball up off the dribble while never using his off hand! He did the same thing with the Rock the Baby dunk over Coop.He stole the ball, cuffed it off the dribble & never used his off hand to brace the ball and slammed it through!

Dr. J is my favorite player of all time. I saw him play in the old ABA with the NY Nets at the Nassau Coliseum back when I was a teenager way back when. He was possibly the most dominant player I saw in that league which had great players and Hall Of Famers who later came into the NBA once the league folded. Great upload dude...

Can we discuss the false narrative that todays defense is better than back then because it’s not. Today in the NBA nobody plays defense and just lets everybody go free in the paint, especially with the all star game sucking horribly now.

Guys, remember this. Everything DR. J did on the court at that time was NEW! His pure athletic ability CHANGED the game and NBA forever!! Nobody had ever seen someone jump from the foul line and slam dunk a ball like Julius did, no one! He annihilated everyone who guarded him and his viscios one arm dunks demoralized his opponents!!! He reinvented basketball!!!!

Dr J! So athletic! And a classy person. I have tons of respect for this man. In his day, he was a superstar. To me he was MJ b4 MJ was MJ if that makes sense. As a Larry Bird fan, I felt Dr J & his 76ers gave the Celtics a tougher workout than the Lakers, (tho I do like how Magic brought out Larry’s competitive nature). By the time the Celtics faced the West Coast, they were plenty bruised.

Dr. J was the MJ before MJ and if you watch how smooth and athletic Dr. J was you will see that mirrored later in MJ's style of play. Jordan's sick layup package and strong moves to the hoop are just a natural extension of Dr. J's game. What I'm saying is, Dr. J was the prototype, he was the blueprint, so that someone like MJ could come along later.

Rate Dr. J? You can’t rate Dr. J. At basketball. Dr. J was above us mere mortals to judge. Are there other players who were better than Dr.J by objective metrics. Probably but it’s not about him dominating, which he could and did. It was what Dr. J brought to the league. You have to keep some things in context. Of the basketball players I’ve seen in over 50 years of watching the NBA the only player I can say matches Dr. J the most in talent, skill and ability is Jordan. But the problem with comparing them is they played different positions. I guess what I’m saying is Dr. J played as at high a level as Jordan but the Doc had a unique style and ease of effort and he was a master of deception. Doc wasn’t just a high flying show off, though man could he show and do inhuman things. As did Jordan. I mean when you watch these old highlight reels you get none of the ebb and flow of the game and how the plays are set up. It’s like comparing high art. What’s the point. Sit back and be prepared to be amazed cause both would do. Just in different ways. What Dr. J’s real accomplishment was he brought style and artistry and playfulness and street cred into the league. What y’all had in the NBA at that time were great athletes and owners who wanted to play unimaginative but well disciplined professional sport. In other words it was BaF. Doc changed all that and they way the game was played changed forever. He also put azzes into seats and in front of the TV when the NBA was going broke, Doc carried the league for about five years (not to mention he carried the ABA for five years) and he made the game far more fun for fans then it ever had been before. So yea…Dr J was just one of those players you can’t judge. Others may have greater accomplishments but no one was cooler than Doc.
