I agree with everything except when realizing when it's time to retire. He retired 3-4 years too late. Once he got a bite from the injury bug,he seemed to never be able to shake it fully. He was never really the same player once he got injured the entire 2009 season. He would make a comeback in 2010, yet was injured a ton in 2010 tearing his Achilles near seasons end making him ineffective in the postseason. Sure he would show glimpses of vintage Troy in 2011-2014, but he lost a lot of his burst and speed. 2008 Polamalu was peak Polamalu

I wish you looked a little closer at what made Troy unique. The backstory is great, and the numbers are helpful, but out of context they say little. Troy was great because of how he read plays faster than anyone else could. He read quarterbacks' minds, he timed snaps to get instant sacks. And why he thrived so well in LeBeau's D was because he was basically allowed to do whatever he wanted. He'd constantly be walking in one direction before the snap, and without even turning his back to check the snap he'd dart off in another direction. He was somehow the most impactful player and yet the hardest to find. No one played pre-snap mindgames like Troy. Just the threat of Troy in the area was enough to get QB's to avoid his entire area, so that made them predictable. Troy preyed on that. He is IMO the most cerebral and instinctive player to ever be on the field. That's why he was feared. No matter how well you executed, there's a chance that Troy was one step ahead and about to take your ball.
@UnderTheTuscanNun Жыл бұрын

Came here to not so eloquently state the same thing. Quarterbacks had to change their play because Troy was simply on the field. He studied each offense extensively before games. He learned cadences of each opponent. His mind was as dangerous as his muscle. I always thought I would see him take a handoff from Quarterback to running back one day.

Momentum really turned when Troy (an unknown freshman at the time) took a fake punt all the way for their lead. 4th quarter we were driving down to take back the lead - my fumble ended our drive and cost us the game. Believe it or not Troy's stature was normal/acceptable at 5'10" for a safety. It wasn't until the NFL started wanting to find the next Harold Carmichael, Calvin Johnson (Megatron) or "The Freak" Randy Moss, did the need for taller safeties come into play. Still today, safeties at that height are fine (for example Tyrann Mathieu 5'9") as long as your team doesn't have to defend a talented tall wideout or highly skilled TE (becoming rare). There are many players with tough background stories that gets overlooked by the league. Unfortunately, many guys do not run across that one person to guide them in the right direction. Sometimes you take chances on guys and its a gamble, but most teams are not comfortable taking risk. In addition, some NFL scouts are lazy and don't put in the work to see the TRUE potential in players. The thing about Troy was he was not good, he was ELITE! He understood the game. His athletic mindset allowed him to blend all the sports he's played. In baseball, you understand where the ball needs to go when it is hit to you when you're on defense, while at bat you also know where you want to hit the ball to advance the runner or increase your chances of getting on base. So Troy always visualized the situation prior to the snap and found himself around the ball most of the time. As a shorter player in basketball, you are always anticipating passes and playing the passing lanes, hence Troy's ability to get between the QB and the receiver. Both baseball & basketball require great hand & eye coordination. All these things played a role in Troy's NFL success. In addition, I am sure Troy also made it a point to listen to his coaches and veteran players. One of his greatest abilities was that he was analytical. He found ways to improve throughout the game because he was constantly analyzing himself and what the other team was trying to do. Troy was the BEST Strong Safety in the game. He was the G.O.A.T. at Strong Safety! Another ability Troy had that goes unmatched in the league today, is that he was UNSELFESS. He played for his team and his teammates, not for the accolades. When you play with a team focus, the individual recognitions will come.

My all time favorite player/human in any sport. Dude played like a raging psychopath but was the most gentle soul

I don't think I have ever seen Troy play deliberately dirty ever, aggressive yes but never really dirty.

Troy you'll never see this but thank you for the childhood memories. You'll be part of my life forever. And I'm not even a steelers fan.

My favorite Troy play came v Broncos in 2005/6 AFCCG. Broncos had a screen set up that would've gone for major yardage and somehow Troy's pure speed and instincts fought through two blocks and he made the play.

The single most absurd sports moment I've ever seen was Peyton as a Bronco calling audibles and Troy moved to every one, resulting in a Peyton calling a time out.

He had some of the best instinct on field of anyone who ever played the game. Had to watch him play live or his highlights to really appreciate the difference he made in the field. Feared no one on the field , was a ball hawk and would meet straight up the middle to stop the run.
