I remember NU Tangela awhile back. Nobody ever really realized that Sawsbuck not only totally walls most sets of it, but can usually get a free switch in, which gives a free Sap Sipper boost. And then Tangela is typically forced to switch out, giving Sawsbuck a free turn to Swords Dance. Bam, +3 Sawsbuck proceeds to sweep.

I'll always remember Tangela for being the only pure Grass-type in generation1, which I found pretty bizarre. I mean, I guess I get the idea of bad-smelling flowers and pitcher plants with acid, but it still felt like the Poison sub-typing was being used a bit much for Grass (especially with the Venusaur line, which aside from Poison Powder, exhibits absolutely no Poison moves in its natural level-up set and never even gained Sludge Bomb, despite existing as a TM in gen2, until gen3 onward; it did also get the Venoshock TM, albeit failed to get Sludge Wave, and HGSS added Sludge as an egg move for whatever that's worth, but it still isn't anything that screams Poison-type).

I’m happy to see that Mr Blue Vine (my lil Tangela) had some use, however little. I use it a lot in doubles with Eviolite and max HP, max Sp. Def and Calm nature. With Rage Powder it can redirect to let you set up T-Room or tank for your heavy hitter. With either Ingrain or Leech Seed it continues to regenerate bits of HP, and stay around better than Zamazenta with no defence investment. It’s always my go to re-director in doubles, since it has higher bulk than any other rage powder users. It’s even pretty good in singles. It has base 100 Sp. Atk (120 with no investment but max IVs), so can regenerate more than a decent bit with a mix of Leech Seed+ Giga Drain. If that combo isn’t enough, you can use the risky Ingrain (which I wouldn’t personally recommend) or the reliable Regenerator, after you lull your opponent to sleep with Sleep Powder or set up Leech Seed for your other team members, and pressure your opponent to switch to a better matchup for your team.
