It's basically a similiar role Thomas Müller played at Bayern, both midfielders did an array of duties which really didn't give them a specific pin-point position like CAM, or CM. In Griezmann's case, it's more remarkable because he used to be THE Target-man for Atletico, coming in from Real Sociedad, he was expected to fill in the big footprints left by Costa with Mandzukic. That role made him the face of Atletico, leading them to a ucl final and europa league title. This is, until his move to barcelona. Now at 33 years, he's no longer quick n speedy, or tall and strong for a targetman, so he has adopted an even complex role, which again, is carrying Atletico right now, his absence on the pitch can be seen as a disaster for Atletico as they continuosly drew or lost to mid-table or even low table teams when he was injured. Overall, its absolutely criminal in him not being talked about enough and him not regarded as one of the world's best. It was truly a mistake for him to shine during the era of the 2 goats.

He is a player that thrives from players moving all the time. He link so well deep and can control the flow of attacks his high press is so good for midfield and defense to spot the threat early and his counter attack is on another level. He is so dangerous you almost have to foul him because his positioning is on another level as well. Whenever he has the ball foul him because he spotted a run, a 1 2, or will initiate a counter and your defense is compromised. Also his work rate and technical abilities make him messi like around the box and final 3rd. If griezman is having a bad game the team will probably fall.

I noticed his (Griezmann) little or no want to get into the box during attacks or counter attacks and I said to myself, "look at Atletico de Madrid...they are not ready to attack and score", but as it turned out, that was their game plan and it put Inter. Milan off tactically. From the outside watching teams, one may think that they know the right thing to do, but you never know their (the team/club's) game plan really, until it works then we praise them 😅 or if it doesn't work, we criticize and say how we (observers from outside the club/team) were right and what we felt/knew should have been done/tweaked!

Just a note on formations. It’s funny how everyone describes this formation as a 3-5-2 when it’s a 5-3-2. In the old days teams were slammed for being defensive and using a back 5, now it’s viewed as attacking. I get it depends how the team play that determines how attacking they are but it doesn’t change the fact that the base is a 5-3-2, just an attacking one.

You know, I don’t think him and Messi on Barcelona would’ve ever worked. Maybe in the beginning of his career when he was a full on winger who would get onto balls and slot it past keepers. But as he aged he became more game iq orientated and wanted to dictate games. And even though it would be an amazing idea to have to play makers and two people who can strike the ball extremely well. Messi and griezman both need to get on the ball to get a feel for the game. -if they don’t touch the ball they aren’t as confident?

Usually teams with a free role player just have one player doing that as it is done so they can have a guy always linking up play and easing the attacking and passing options for their teammates, 2 playmakers like messi and griezmann can't work together as it'd be like having 2 bag of teas but with no water to pour on them. Free role players (unless they are Firmino who ran, marked and pressed like hell) tend to not waste energy as much in terms of defensive effort as you usually want them fresh to be the ones who dictate play and score goals. although in Liverpool Salah would be the guy being set up to define plays and scores not Bobby. So having 2 playmakers just makes you vulnerable defensively. a team is a team and you need players that complement each other's skills and weaknesses.
