white is insanely hard to get right because when you sand or "scuff" nitro cellulose lacquer it turns to white dust, so if youre not extremly careful, youre very likely to sand through the lacquer, throught the paint, down to the wood which potentially would call for the guitar to be scrapped

there is a window between a maximum of .15 of an inch. any variation higher than that and the guitar will get kicked out for repair, and if its unrepairable it never leaves the factory. trust me. im the kid in the jean vest hoodie, when you see that short timelapse im in the top left. ive personally memorized most of the acceptable pitch window that we pay extremely close attention to, its kind of our entire job as a neck fitter. the angle from the face of the body near the bridge to the nut on a les paul standard will always be between .625-.700" , usually about .66"
@roughcutguitars4 жыл бұрын
Noah Dulin Lucky man! Like anything, everyone's got their own view - for some .15 (a touch over 1/8") is a lot. For others, no big. My new 2019 ES339 in black satin has some gaps around the neck joint and the paint settled in...not finish cracks, but an actual gap that shows it wasn't a tight fit. There is also evidence of a sloppy paint job where the fretboard/binding meets the body...it looks like the same situation as the neck joint, but has a rough texture that doesn't match the smoothness of the rest of the finish...like paint pooled in that corner and dried that way. There's also specs of black paint all over the cream binding. The f-holes are rough and look unfinished. It came that way new from a reputable national dealer. A bit disappointing. On the other hand, my 2018 SG special (that costs half what the ES339 did) is flawless.
@alexnelson84 жыл бұрын
Jon Reaves that’s a shame. Notice how Gibson didn’t like your comment. That’s why you never buy a guitar new sight unseen. Check out the Fender factory tour video that was uploaded to Anderton’s a few days ago. It’s pretty incredible. I love Gibson guitars, but I also love Fender guitars. I have been looking for a used 335 for a few years now.
@reavesjl4 жыл бұрын
Dexter Rutecki This was the first guitar I’ve ever bought “sight unseen”. The store model was beat up from people demoing it...When you spend a few grand on a Gibson guitar you expect perfection. Unfortunately, the store would only exchange it for credit because it was on clearance and the other Gibsons they had also had cosmetic issues. I live in Canada and haven’t been able to get an answer from Gibson about repair or shipping costs. I have 5 fenders (some Mexican some US) and they were all flawless when I bought them. I’ve owned flawless epiphones too. I have seen the fender factory video. It’s great. I want to see Gibson succeed like everyone else, but I don’t think they’re quite there yet.
@yestoES3554 жыл бұрын
Dexter Rutecki yup Gibson USA is still pretty bad and a hit or miss for a 2k + guitar. I’d buy no Gibson’s no later than 2010. Especially when compared to fender, PRS, Gretsch, and more boutique level guitars. Gibson custom is great but the USA mass production line is really not worth the price. Not until they fix the QC issues which I thought they would and got rid of the Chinese cases for 2020

The long neck tenon is only on the custom shop Les Pauls such as r7, r8, r9... and so on. The new 50's and 60's standards are short neck tenon.
@ParaBellum2024 Жыл бұрын
Given the accuracy and repeatability possible with decent CNC equipment, I'm amazed that Gibson have people manually adjusting the fit of necks (with the subsequent need to rout for pickups etc. _after_ the neck's been fitted, to make sure these line up with the imperfect neck). No wonder they're a) so expensive and b) so inconsistent. Any production engineer worth his salt should be able to set up the CNC to make consistent neck pockets and matching tenons, possibly with some self-locating features to help the components align properly.
@These_go_to_eleven_1959 Жыл бұрын
I have no experience in wood working but know enough to understand what you are saying and i agree. I am not real pleased that Gibson is doing this way and do not understand why the tenon has a trapezoid shape while the mortis is not that shape at all? I would think for the best fit the necks tenon would fit the mortis like a puzzle piece? can you tell me if this is wrong? and lastly i actually prefer the Long tenon Gibson used in the 50's to this modern method.
@mikeriesco61744 жыл бұрын
Inspiring, and props to these guys who obviously take pride in what they do. But in today’s digital world, there’s no way a computer-controlled, laser-guided neck-setting machine wouldn’t be absolutely perfect. Look at PRS or Taylor build processes...absolutely dead-on. Whereas Gibson is known for their hit-or-miss quality results. There’s a reason why cars are built by ultra-precision robotic assembly machines...they all need to come out identically perfect.

I bought a Gibson 335 in 2017, à 2016 I believe. never use it a lot, not happy with pickups etc. so I bought some new pickups two-month ago, and a LESTREM by Duesenberg. when I decide with my luthier to instal everything we discovered that the truss-rod was fully blocked inside and probably from the factory because we never open it from the first day I bought it. it's like this guitar is new played 10 times at home. So I was one more time disappointed by Gibson, but my luthier show me something worst. My 335 is a normal one, nothing custom. But I was in front of a guitar made only at 100 units. the 3 made for my country weren't in good condition. but they where new !!! limited edition. vibrola wasn't working on pickup wasn't connected, the varitone wasn't working well. and this was, they said, a limited run. so in one day a discovered that my Gibsons are worst than any of my Epiphone. DO YOU THINK this normal. we are talking about guitars that cost 5K !!!!!!!! you can make all the videos you want, you are not telling the truth. you sell guitars they don't work. if every time we buy a Gibson we need to go to the luthier to be sure that this guitar is working, this not good. So I can't sold my guitar, and really can't enjoy it because we can't fix it right. Want to say thank you to Gibson for that. I lost so much money.
