How difficult is it to climb Ben Nevis via The Mountain Track, also known as the 'Tourist Route'? It's the UK's tallest mountain in Scotland (Grampian Mountain Range, Western Highlands). Watch the video and be the judge for yourself as I take you up the mountain on a warm Summer's day in July.

I walked this last Saturday and the party I was in started at 2:30am; the idea was to see the sun coming up. It was far too cloudy for that sadly. I enjoyed going up but coming down almost finished me off; knees hurting, groin muscles stiffening up and my legs were almost turning to jelly! But I did it and so glad because at 60 years of age I feel it was a real achievement.

As this is a video about hiking in the Scottish highlands I just wanted to mention Finn Creaney, He posted videos about outdoor lifestyle and had a channel called ‘the wildcat way’. he went missing whilst hiking around Loch Naver in March last year and hasn’t been seen or heard from since. Sorry if this comment is unrelated to the video but wanted to take the opportunity to spread awareness of his disappearance in the hope the he could be found.

Well done guys! This was on hubbys bucket list so we climbed the Ben end of June. Took us 3 and half hours probably quicker if didn’t keep stopping to take photos. Took us 4 hours to get down as I took a fall (nothing serious, lot of bruising) but it knocked my confidence and played with my head…fear of heights. Glad I’ve done it but never again, hubby wants to do it again to see if he can do it faster without me😉

I walked this route with my daughter to get the sunrise on Wednesday morning this week. It took us 4 hours to get up and three to return to the car park. We had a stunning red sky and a cloud inversion over the loch below us. Magical 360 degrees views. Stunning. And we were so lucky to have the top to ourselves for45 minutes. Well worth the effort. I did the Watkin Path up Snowdon a couple of weeks ago too and I thought that was easier.

We kind of rushed it to be honest, wish we did relax a little more as when we got down, our legs were super sore for like 3-4 days straight! My sister has just been airlifted off Ben Nevis with a broken leg and very badly injured ankle 😢 Not even got the right scanner at the nearest hospital - so both she and hubby are resting before the 6 hour journey home. She's got an appointment at the fracture clinic next Tuesday so is on really heavy painkillers to get her through and has to stay lying down due to the pain. Please be careful if you go up it as they are in their caravan at the bottom, watching the RAF helicopter flying up to rescue others every day. My sister said it's so slippy with grit on top of the big stones. 😢

@@TravelGxng not seen the Snowdon one as yet but most definitely will, I underestimated Snowdon from Llanberris pass and got caught out in the snow many years ago ,Snowdon is a lot more demanding than Nevis what I remember. If you ever consider doing the Everest base camp just make sure your sat down when your told how much it’s going to cost you, We are planning next year if we can get finances together ,I’m quite exited of getting a taste of altitude sickness for the first time this year on Elbrus as that’s far higher than anything I ever hiked.

What clothing would you recommend for this hike? Doing it in September, would you recommend training for it?
@TravelGxng
@TravelGxng Жыл бұрын
This was in Summer so shorts and t shirt was fine. Maybe September consider long bottoms, but remember it's all about 'layering'. I'd recommend a synthetic t shirt / long sleeve or merino wool...as these dry quicker if it rains and you get wet. Do not take cotton t shirts or clothing! Rain jacket is essential too... Good hiking boots...thick hiking socks!

Yes, definitely do 'not' go up there in Winter and / or if it is a rainy day. Far too slippy, and too dangerous. Tricky bits, narrow rocky parts even before you get to the zig zags. Please be careful. There is even snow up there in July, so other seasons are out the question I would say, other than Summer ❤ X ... Be safe ❤ X ... Love from Scotland, ❤X ..

Hi Noah, I felt the same! Don't worry, it's like a gradual, long and steep walk - the path is very rocky but obvious, with lots of people along the way so you don't have to worry! @@TravelGxng there are plenty of great mountains with great paths and great height (relative to surroundings) but aren't as much as a slog. Ben Lomond is a good call as it's the southermost Munroe and if you do the Ptarmigan path as part of a circular toute it's easy but interesting (whereas Nevis' CMD Arete is not suitable for a novice). Goatfel on Arran is a beauty. Of course the Arrochar Alps (famous for Ben Arthur AKA The Cobbler) but also Nairnan via the South Path is gorgeous. Lots of other Munroes and Corbetts too, but those are some of the headliners.
