To me the hardest part BY FAR is thinking in another language. If you keep thinking in your language & then try to translate all of that, expressing yourself takes way much longer, but if you think directly in korean then you're pretty much already there.

daegvboy I'm only a month or so in but I'm studying very hard and doing a lot of immersion through films and music. I probably hear more words in Korean per day some days than English. I almost said hello in Korean to a bus driver the other day and my brain feels a bit confused some days!

Learning how to read Korean is easy. Knowing the suffixes is easy. But with any language, it's just getting a larger vocabulary and learning to think fast enough to use the things you know.

Mihai Untu that's not true. japanese grammar can be a little easier but it does have a lot of particles and verbs endings that other languages don't have. the grammar difficulty levels are almost the same.

oi compared to Korean its easier. Here's an example. To modify nouns with a preceding verb, in Korean you have to make special conjugations (고기 먹는 친구) but in Japanese its just the plain conjugations, no new ones (肉を食べる友達). Its like 고기 먹어 친구.

It's quite easy because it's something really logical with rare exceptions but it's also quite difficult because we have too learn a lot of vocabulary (cause there's no common roots with any language) and there are all lot of particules even if, when we know each of them, they are quite easy to use

Thanks for making this video. From a perspective of self-educating person, who learned Japanese and is now learning Korean.. I have to divide it into two categories. First one, which is talking and understanding - I have to say korean language is very difficult, for sounds that does not natively appear in english or my native language. I had to spend hours of listening to grasp how and how are the sounds formed. Once your mind gets that it's like you got on a highway. Other part is writing system, which in comparision with jp is so easy to learn, write and use. Thank you king 세종. If we talk about grammar, it can get very hard - they have differente endings and suffixes which on one side are hard to learn (onebyone) but on the other hand i can express everything without using extra words(sentences). Honorifics are a breeze if you understand basic grammar. (but still needs to be pracitsed). Anyhow.. I think we learn language forever, it doesn't have an end ~

@Mary, la ragazza felice! I would say.. it depends.. haha ~~I think you should learn the one you should learn one, that is closer to your heart. Get to know the culture of both, set a goal. Go and spend a month in Korea and Japan. Thing that I paused Jpn and learn Korean doesn't mean I don't like it. I still love anime and a lot of things about J. It's just that people and culture of Korea somehow feels closer. Just to answer your question fully - I !think although Japanese -- grammar is easier and pronunciation is much clearer -I think it's harder then Korean ^^a . M-maybe one of the factors were also... the idol culture? I mean I might not like how someof them are treated, but after a long day of work it's nice to turn on your fav program and whatch f.e. Running man, with all members you knew for 7 years and take them basically as your ..family. ㅋ Of course that's just me, it took me half the time of learning jpn to learn krn, but jpns was a big help, similar grammar and small percentage of similar words. Also knowledge of kanji, or a least principle helped a lot too ㅋㅋ So again. You need to spend a lot of time actually learning it, reading (if possible h) and best thing would be to have an online buddy or--go to a korea. Good luck!

@Neah Honestly, it depends on a person. For me it was quite difficult to learn more languages at the same time especially if they are similar. You'd have to try. How I start learning language is this. I start with basic grammar and basic words. I study this and try to immerse myself in it, with this I do a lot of listening, just to grasp the sounds. This goes well with movies songs or podcasts. After that goes advanced grammar and vocab. Actually best thing you can do is to combine this all with conversation with someone who can speak the language. If you can do it live even better. At the end it's all about motivation, at least that is what keeps me on my learning journey.

As a foreigner who has been learning Korean for 2 years with dedication, I believe it is easy if you are dedicated and keep studying consecutively and use it in every opportunity you can, like reading a lot of children's books, the newspaper, putting up post-it notes of words you find difficult around the house and even label your furniture, food etc. In Korean till you get so used to seeing it. You will find that you've remembered those words a lot faster by seeing it visually till it's stuck in your brain. And for those who are also learning, do not doubt yourself and don't be afraid to start forming sentences of your own, if you feel like you are wrong, get a native friend from maybe a language exchange to correct you and help you progress. Have fun with it, be confident

For me it's easy to get to a beginner reading level but to breaking into fluency has been difficult. Kind of like English, I find Korean has many ways of expressing VERY similar ideas but with small differences in tone. Very confusing @_@. Also as an English speaker, it's been difficult to think such a different sentence structure but I hope I can improve this by practicing more at making sentences. Also, I will always concede to the fact that English is one of the most difficult languages to learn. Just look at how awful even some NATIVE speakers are at English.

I'm not even talking about conversational vs formal/academic settings. I'm talking about BASIC mistakes like you're/your or there/their/they're or less/fewer/much/many or even not knowing when to include a comma in a sentence. Or how about using the correct prepositions (compared with vs compared to). There are even people that use double negatives (I didn't do nothing). Don't even get me started on spelling, though I myself am a horrible speller. Korean pronunciation has been a challenge for me but there is all but NO consistency in the pronunciation of English words. Not to mention the subtle differences in verb conjugations! I'm willing to bet very few even native English speakers could tell me the difference between "He went to the store" and "He has gone to the store". In fact, I can say with relative certainty that I made a number of mistakes in my English in this comment alone xD . Not hating on people, just saying English is objectively difficult no matter where you're from!

I think if a language is difficult also depends if you enjoy learning it or not. For example I am italian and I have french at school, but I don't like the teacher and the way she is teaching, so I don't enjoy learning. I also study korean by myself and I noticed that often I remember words even better than french words (even though french should be easier for me). Even if something is difficult in korean I am happy while learning it and stay motivated. So if you like the language, you will have more motivation and it will be a bit easier

For me, korean is only medium difficulty. I am a native english speaker and the second language I learned (or half-learned) was Spanish. What's especially difficult when learning other languages is verb endings and pronunciation, but my tongue has found it relatively easy to adjust to korean pronunciation. I just can't speak as quickly as I can with Spanish or English. I love the fact that there aren't different verb conjugations based on the pronoun (1st, 2nd, 3rd person). Also, there aren't feminine and masculine objects. I can only understand seoul dialect, some dialects sound like another language. Spanish is spoken a little bit too fast for me to understand immediately, but my comprehension is very good. I think it's also hard for some people to learn because there aren't as many resources as there are for romance languages. It is not a language that you encounter very often in the western world. The writing structure is really nice. It has rules that are easy to follow. There is one writing system, which makes it easier for me than Japanese. Chinese is a whole nother ball park (too tonal and too many characters). Also, I don't study Korean everyday. I'm self-studying which makes it a lot more difficult. No one to give me assignments or readily check my work. No native speakers to talk to :( However, I won't let that hinder my language learning journey :) Edit: The sentence structure gets me sometimes as well.

If after a couple of months you're able to make very basic sentences, give yourself a pat on the back. Don't expect to be fluent in a few months though - I'd say it's impossible. But a few months is a great amount of time to get your feet wet. Good luck in your studies~!

I've been working on it for about 3 weeks now, using Billy's beginner Korean Course Playlist (currently at lesson 65), the FSI Korean Basic Course (currently lesson 7), and "Crash Landing on You". From a baseline of being a high-B1-or-low-B2 in Japanese and a B1 in Mandarin (and noting that I learn languages to have more interesting interactions when I travel - not for fluency by any stretch) I'm not having too hard of a time in Korean so far. Thanks to my knowledge of Japanese, the honorifics and word order are a cinch, and I find that a lot of the sino-Korean words are fairly similar to how they're pronounced in at least one of either Mandarin or Japanese. Where Korean wins, hands-down, is the writing system, which Billy's first 10 videos taught me in an evening. The fact that I can watch a segment of a TV show with English subtitles, and then replay it with Hangul CC's and play a game of "match the words to their meanings" as I read along with ease, makes picking up vocab way more fun, and easier, than it ever was for Mandarin or Japanese. All told, I wish I had learned Korean before Japanese because of the writing system - in hindsight, I would have rather wrapped my head around honorifics and particles first in a language with a phonetic script and spaces between words, and then used the familiar vocab and grammar as a crutch as I learned Kanji. All told, IMHO, Korean is not an 'easy' language, but I think it's the easiest of the 'hard' languages in that 2200-hour list.

i think learning Korean just like learning guitar..basically it's a very simple at beginner, everything is pretty easy. Yet, when you entering the 2nd level to think of you can have the conversation with Native Korean, you'll face the "bottle neck". It just like playing Final Fantasy 8....1st level Korean is so easy like fight with small monster, and 2nd level Korean is fight with Ultima Weapon..the JUMP of the difficulties is drastically.

I already can speak 4 languages aside from Korean but they are all european languages. I think the korean vocabulary is pretty easy (as they are a lot of english words 😆) but, as the grammar is totally different from all the languages I know, I think it's what makes it difficult to learn. So it must be difficult to learn at the beginning, but once you know all the grammar basis, it becomes easier ☺

Korean, as any language, depends on what your mother language is! Of course from a native English speaker point of view, Korean is one of hardest to master, but so is Japanese, Chinese, other languages with different writing system and grammar structure. As a native Portuguese speaker myself, I also have the same difficulties that an English speaker does when learning Korean, however if you take in consideration a native Japanese speaker, it's suddenly the easiest language for them to learn. As someone who is also struggling a little with Korean right now, I personally don't think it's a hard language by itself, but since it's so different from what we're used to, people tend to believe it's super hard. The writing system is possibly easier than the one we use, and the words are most of the time pronounced as they are written, something that English sort of lacks. Koreans conjugations are easy to understand, and the pattern is ALWAYS the same, after you get used to it, every conjugation is possible. Also, it's not hard to get used to it! There is one main positive point that I found while learning Korean that makes it easier for me, since Korean is SO DIFFERENT from the languages I speak, I can easily turn those languages off and think in Korean, doing the same with English took me years of reading and getting used with the language. Being able to think in the language is a huge step for proficiency, and doing that earlier speeds up a lot the process. Well, these were some considerations, don't be afraid of learning new languages, they may be different, hard even, but they're rewarding!!!

You're right about the depends on native language thing. Like as for example turkish, other uralic languages, mongolian, korean and japanese said to be the easiest languages to learn for hungarian speakers (if we only count the grammar and pronunciation). And i guess there is some truth in that based on my own experience with learning japanese as a hungarian speaker and nowadays also starting to get into korean too.

I feel like the basics are very easy to master. The early chapters of your books where you teach Hangul and all the pronunciations is simple, and straightforward. You could put almost anything in front of me and I could read it to you (had a friend's parent do that to me. Good times). Couldn't tell you what it meant, though. The grammar and vocab is a nightmare, but no more so than any language that English doesn't share commonalities with. I really enjoy it, though. Despite the steep learning curve, it does make sense eventually.

I think where most people get stuck after learning basic grammar and vocab is making sentences by translating from their native language. Sometimes it just doesn't work like that. You gotta start thinking in the language ur trying to learn, its hard to do at first but you just gotta grind...Grind HARD.

Yes it is difficult because they do not use the romanized alphabet. I took French in high school and college, then I visited Italy. I didn't think my French would help me but it really did because I was able to understand signs even if it was pronounced differently, it looked similar. Korean is completely different but I am enjoying the challenge! 파이팅!

I found the comment about 'just being confident' very interesting. I think native English speakers have a weird obsession with having to learn languages perfectly which stems from the belief that if they don't speak perfectly then they will look foolish or even that no one will understand them whilst people learning English as a foreign language don't worry about perfection as they know that as long as what they say communicates the desired meaning then that's enough. Even if your second language is no where near perfect, speak it anyway!

Korean is slightly difficult initially because of how it looks. I'm learning Mandarin so that initial climb of "what the heck do these symbols mean" is the hard part. Other than that, I think the language is beautiful and rather logical in its meaning (also quite close to Mandarin at times!) Loved the video and definitely felt more encouraged to keep going. Before I started studying Korean, I thought that Russian was difficult. Having married a Russian - whose English was, perhaps, challenged - I had to learn Russian, however difficult it was. But there are several parts of the language that escaped me for a long time. Korean made learning Russian look easy to me. I can detail some of the reasons. 1. Agglutination. At first, I tried to treat all those particles as if they were endings. And then as optional endings. It doesn't work like that, especially for verbs. 2. Adapting my thinking so that the word order seems natural. This is coming, but no matter how reasonable the word can seem to be, it is hell to construct the sentences, so that they are understandable. 3. I have gotten used to the honorific system, but I cannot say that I can use it easily. 4. I think that it was a mistake to allow two numbering systems. 5. If I study Indo-european languages, the common vocabulary really helps. If I study any of the Romance languages, my Latin and the other languages that I use help. There was nothing like that for Korean. I should have studied Chinese, if I wanted that kind of help. These are just a few of the reasons. I might note that I began study of Korean because I wanted to find songs of a particular singer on the Internet more easily. As I picked up more and more, I got sucked into going beyond looking for songs. I like Korea. My wife and I have been there three times already, and we are already planning our fourth trip. She was surprised - and gratified - that there seem to be a lot of Russian speakers among Koreans. One last thing. Your language videos does make learning Koreans somewhat easier. I think you have a gift for explanation that I have found quite helpful.

Yes, i know, i listen to k-pop since 2010-11 and i'm constantly watching a movie, drama or a variety program (i'm currently watching 아는형님 on netflix), and sometimes i can hear the difference between 가 and 까 in a word, but when i try to say that word i stumble everytime. Take for example "안녕하십니까", if i hear someone saying, i know it's written with 까 and not 가, but when i try to repeat after them, i can't speak normally like they do, i mean, in the same speed and entonation, and that's what frustrates me.

I learned Spanish as a child and Japanese as a young adult and I also grew up hearing Arabic and Italian spoken (if not shouted lol) frequently around the house. Now I am attempting Korean and I have to say that it is the most difficult of all the languages I have studied. I am a visual learner and after that I rely on sounds. I'd say that learning Korean is difficult because as some people said there are many endings to certain words. I'm not fluent, but am working hard on learning. I hope that others who are learning will be successful with their studies as well be able to speak Korean fluently one day. One tip I would give is try to connect yourself with people who are fluent or also learning as it will make it more fun and easy. Good luck!!

Nah, you don't need to be extra "smart" to learn Korean. It's a myth that you have to be really smart to learn more than one language. What you do have to be is hard working and exposed to the language a lot. If you're working hard to learn it, you'll learn it. If you're really smart, it can help you to learn it much faster than others, but that's not a requirement so don't let it bother you. I don't consider myself extra smart either but I learned it pretty well. I'm pretty normal IMO.

I think Korean is really hard to learn. :/ I think learning Hangul is easy, how to read is easy, however when it comes to learning Grammer and vocabulary....etc. I think that part is hard. I'm currently a Senior in college learning Korean, and I'm in intermediate. I don't know how. hahahaha XD I still feel like I'm speaking at a beginners level, even though I think I can read well. Yeah - Korean is extremely hard in almost any way you want to look at it. In my opinion the difficulty is caused by words tending to be very short, which results in a very compact language which again results in words being very similar and hard to differentiate. Take this random example: 기한 , 기헌, 기혼, 기흔, 기훈. All these words mean something different but only ONE letter is changed between them. Now add a SLIGHT difference in the fist letter, which btw. almost sounds the same: 끼한 , 끼헌, 끼혼, 끼흔, 키흔 and you will get another five different words. And this is just ONE example. And then there is grammar, then there are several layers of formality ... ... Extremely hard to learn.

Because I have been interested in Korean Culture, Art, Music, History, Food, much longer than Ive been learning the language. So for me learning Korean has been a way to understand better what Ive already been exposed to. So my goal was about understanding real conversations vs vocabulary memorization. Yes! I live in Korea atm and honestly it's being a couple of months and all I know is the basic (yes I will be honest I don't practice or study it) but for me it's so vastly different then English and Spanish -- which is my second language. All the Latin languages are incredibly easy for me to understand and survive in, but Korean is a whole new story. The language of interest for me that is widely different then my spoken languages is Arabic and even when staying in an Arabic speaking country very briefly I was able to pick up so much more then I have here in Korea. Maybe it's because the language doesn't really intrigue me, but I think I overall struggle in the pronunciation. Time will tell, I hope I am able to walk away with more then what I have gathered thus far though.

I realized that the Korean (simple) sentence structure is similar to German Nebensätze (subordinate clause). So when I try to compose a sentence I try to follow that and try to think how the sentence would be like of it started with the word ‚weil‘ (because). I usually then get the sentence right. Now if I figure out a way to learn all those endings.... Sigh. I find Korean hard to learn. I could read everything slowly, just don‘t ask me what anything means.

It's easy for them to say it's easy because they are Korean, they have been learning since the day they were born. If your native language is not Korean then it won't be that easy, it also depends on the person, some people will find it harder than others.

I think learning any language can be difficult. And even though I struggle with my Korean language learning currently, I still thank my lucky stars that my native language is English because having to learn English as a second language would be almost impossible for me lol! English is so difficult! I feel everything else is easy in comparison 😂. Mad respect to those multilingual peeps who have English as a second (or third) language!!
