The right side driver is obviously influenced by the UK ..but interestingly enough I believe Thailand is the only country in SE Asia that wasn't officially colonized by the Europeans..therefore has been able develop their own culture with an underlying western influence. Unless someone on here can correct me if I'm wrong.

Welcome back to Bangkok! That's a lot of distance you covered on foot form Lumpini Park to Asoke intersection via Ratchaprasong intersection, all without breaking sweat in this unusually hot January but usual dry season air pollution. Bangkok AQI index has measured over 100 almost daily since Jan. 7th. Last Friday, the 19th has been particularly high (above 150). Please consider protecting yourself and your dad's lungs if you're sensitive to high concentration to PM2.5! BTW Thonglor is a good place to stay if you want to be close to the expat scenes, especially Japanese. 😉

Thank you! You know the pollution doesn't bother me that much here to be honest. I've been places where it is significantly worse. Maybe if I spent a year here it would affect me more but for a month it's not bad.

1 It is a line of communication. not electrical wire 2 Bangkok is currently bringing electrical wires into the ground. Many areas already and will all be posted soon. 3 Therefore, there has been no investment in above-ground poles because the process of bringing them underground has already begun.

Your question about why we drive on a particular side of the road: Originally as Horesless carriages came into common use roads were mostly left hand side traffic. This was because cavalry used the right hand to fight with swords. So both needed to be keep their enemy to their right side by riding on the left. The Brittish Commonwealth and its territories for the most part kept that in their traffic plannning (typical of English bureaucracy), even as cavalry days faded into the past. Canada however followed the American change to right side traffic flow because they share land boarders. Thus it made it safer to have traffic smoothly move between the countries in the Americas. Europe likewise standardised in their move to right hand traffic flow as they shared land boarders. You will not that all Commonwealth nations (except Canada), the Islands of the Pacifis, lower Asian nations (former British colonies) and most of sub-Saharan Africa still drive on the left with driver positioned on the right of the vehicle. Not that we use swords anymore... lol.

I will keep on being my own kind of handsome. In the central USA and in the Midwestern USA you can still get a nice efficiency apartment for $1000 per month or less. Have watched the Two Mad Explorers on You Tube that have just recently left Thailand. They visited some smaller cities in the South of the country and their rent was much lower for some less elaborate looking Air B&B's and over night accommodiations. They found some really great beaches there that were no over crowded and some great temples that offered spectacular views. They also rented and drove scooters without the fear of the roads and crazy local scooter drivers. They didn't seem overly afraid of the locals. The heat seemed worse than Bangkok. Great video on Bangkok, a city, that they didn't cover much. They claimed the best way to travel and see Thialand was by train.

What areas in the Midwest would you recommend? I'm from the Colorado Rockies, but it's getting financially out of reach. And which airport to fly out of in the Midwest?
@AlinaMcleod
@AlinaMcleod 5 ай бұрын
Sure, you can get some accommodations in Canadian small towns or cities for that as well, but they aren't even remotely close to what Bangkok has to offer. For a fair comparison you need a city of around the same population and the same amenities which in the US or Canada would be well above $3000 USD.
@informationcollectionpost3257
@informationcollectionpost3257 5 ай бұрын
@@flutingaround My $1000 is based on efficiencies in Marysville, OH. Marysville has lots of plazas to shop at but no public transportation. Its economy is manufacturing, mostly Honda and Honda sub-contractors/suppliers, Miracle Grow or Scotts Lawn (pesticides, nitrogen based fertilizers, and other cancer causing chemicals used in agriculture), and a division of Parker Hannifin that makes hydraulic pumps. Most of the work involves a lot of lifting ( heavy repeat lifting) and assembly type work. There are little to no white collar jobs. A lower cost and larger city to live in is Fort Wayne, IN that in my opinion is more urbanized and has a more diverse economy than Marysville. It has some financial headquarters ( mostly small insurance companies), a retail corporate headquarter ( hardware chain), several hydraulic and pneumatic manufacturing plants, the GM pick-up truck assembly plant ( a huge plant), several asphalt plant manufacturers,a large grocery store warehouse, 3 military equipment manufacturing plants ( 2 that involve electronics), about 3 building fabrication plants ( for large commercial type buildings), 3 small universities, and lots and lots of shopping and resteraunts. It also has a public air port that offers flights to other major airports or small cities ( like Huntsville, AL; Chattanooga, TN, Erie, PA) by major commercial airlines. The local economy has less job openings than Marysville but the city with the apartment prices that I paid when I lived there offers far far more than Marysville. It is one of the lowest cost smaller to mid-sized cities in the USA. Loved living there. Celina/Marysville, OH is making an economic come back mostly due the expansion of Crown Equipment. (my wife grew up in Celina) Central Ohio from Columbus to Fort Wayne currently has the lowest unemployment in the USA even if most of the jobs are blue collar. Columbus, Ohio has lots of employment and low rent for a major city which is kinda high in my opinion. It has Amazon regional warehouses ( 2 or 3), a new Intel Chip plant that is under construction, about 3 regional bank headquarters, a Budweiser beer and bottling plant, of course state government, & of course Ohio State University ( along with all the world class hospitals, 3 or 4, that Ohio State medical research supports) Columbus has an international airport and is about 30 to 40 miles from Marysville. Dayton, OH has an international airport but other than the air force base ( Wright Patterson AFB) the town is dieing slowly.

If I recollect, you visited Thailand for first time just a few years ago during Covid and maybe subsequently. It's changed a great deal through the decades as anywhere else. Just the current usual post-covid complaints and the usual ex-pat harping.
