Hey, I have 2002 tacoma stepside with a trd supercharger installed from day one. It is simply the best add on you can purchase. Back then it was $3000..I don't remember the dealership even charging me for installation. Now..I've had it 22 years. Currently has almost 280,000 miles on it. Never had any issues. Never been rebuilt. And yes, I drive it hard. It runs just as good as the day I bought. Only use premium in all my vehicles and toys. Change oil every three thousand miles. Do the PM and it will last forever....thinking about putting a supercharger on my new 40th anniversary 4RUNNER...only have 531 miles after six weeks of ownership...

I supercharged my 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium at the end of 2019 and I have never had any issue! To be fair, I have never daily driven my 4Runner though, which obviously helps, having less mileage. I only use it for overlanding, camping, off road exploring, adventure rig and recently drove it from Canada's west coast, all the way to the east coast, then back, (from Vancouver to Halifax and back), and my only issue was running over a nail in Quebec lol. The Magnuson sc is still by far the best mod I have done to my 4Runner! Finally being able to pass on the highway was a dream come true lol I love seeing these updates from others who installed it! Great video! It was fun to hear about your experience. I came to the same cross roads of what was I going to do keep my 2013 4Runner and put a $9,000 (with labor) super charger on it, or trade it in and get a Lexus GX 460 (Lexus' version of the 4Runner) with a 4.6L V8 (this decision was in 2021). I'm sure you made the choice because of the same reasons I did, which is as much as we love our 4Runner's they are absolutely gutless once you load them up with people and gear. I chose to trade in the SUV and got a great deal on a 2019 GX 460 and that V8 made all the difference in our towing and off roading experiences. It ended up costing way less when factoring the cost of the super charger so for me it was the better choice. What I did do to the motor was have it re-tuned so that it lets out more of that horse power and torque that is available in the Lexus LS 460, so for $900 instead of 301 hp and 329 lbs torque which is stock in the GX 460, it now puts out 386 hp and 367 lbs of torque just like the LS 460 version of the same motor. I am glad you are happy and it is running great for you.

Good video and setting the right expectations with the plugs/coil packs & pulley problem but Magnusson needs to step up and quit selling it if they cant get the Mopar 4cyl idler pulley part# and coolant connections right from the get-go. Had mine since spring '21 about 20k miles so far 18 mos later. The coolant hoses/fittings are sized wrong for each other they slightly leak. And the china man Pulley is also a COMMON problem with these kits. Magnussen ships the kits with an el cheapo Idler pulley that WILL bounce around and cause problems under load and thats probably why your bearing is wallowing out not the dust. Maggie will eventually ship you a free BETTER design one not made in china... but you have to 'prove it' to their tech line with video of it wobbling around. Put the truck in Drive w Ebrake on and turn ON the AC and wait for compressor to cycle...you will see the blower tensioner rattle around making the phantom clicking noise. Maggie will give you the better Dayco one eventually. The fact that you can be on a long distance trip or up in the rural mountains/desert and this $30-40 garbage idler could leava ya stranded aint cool. Id suggest a spare new idler and belt for future trips especially w the lame covid supply chain problems. To fix the wrong sized coolant line connections you need a 5/8-3/4 brass hose adapter. Its a low pressure system and the leaks are minimal but for $7k you would think maggie would get the KNOWN hose connections and KNOWN Idler pulley prob right from the factory and ship out replacement pulleys for all existing unsold kits. Very maddening already going thru this since month #2 hearing the noise on mine and dealer saying nothings wrong. Fixed it myself under warranty, and the newer better pulley is WAY stiffer so its not easy to get the belt back on. I drove from socal to Houston round trip with the idler pulley noise not knowing yet thats exactly what it was. I was blaming my AC clutch bc it only made noise in Drive w AC on. It was the low rpm motor loaded while in gear that the idler couldnt control the belt. Very un-nerving and not inline with Toyota reliability. Your not going to visually see it screwing up unless the car is in Drive at idle. Blown/worn Pulleys are not normal and should not be expected much less the coolant leaks you will have unless you put the kit together with smaller 5/8 hose or get the step down adapters($2-3 each) at the reservoir/pump junctions. OEM boosted applications do not do these things. I assumed bc Toyota and TRD history this would.beba seamless experience, not a problem having dealer do it all and the high price. It always goes back to hot rodding 101 - nothing aftermarket is perfect always going to be something to work through. Good life lesson for me to always buy it from factory w boost or none at all.

@@ToTheDirt We have had a great experience with ours also just the idler pulley problem should have never been a problem due to magnussens bad decision. I had a slight increase in my fuel economy right after putting the supercharger on. The supercharger was the first modification to the vehicle, which is a 2016 TRDPro, and it went from 18mpg to 20mpg. I put a lot of miles both highway and city with it this way and the mpgs remained around that level. @@mryikes9602 so I know when my truck was stock, when I would shut it off sometimes it would sound like that for a few seconds. Sometimes it would happen a few minutes after the truck was completely off. I was told it was the "air pump" and it was normal. With the supercharger I had an issue early on where the installers didn't hook up the supercharger coolant system correctly and it would slowly leak coolant. When the coolant was low you could hear it sucking through the supercharger coolant reservoir.

The Magnuson tune is for the factory air box. I had the K&N CAI originally and it did not fit the supercharger. One of the inlets for the CAI tube got in the way. I’m not sure if they have redesigned it in the meantime.

One thing that irritates me is the fact my 4Runner kicks down quickly when going up a hill and will hunt back and forth between 4th and 5th. So I pull it down right away and leave it in 4th until I crest the hill. Did you notice and difference along those lines? Will your 4Runner pull hills in 5th where it would have kicked down into 4th before the supercharger. Thank you Gary
@ToTheDirt Жыл бұрын
Don’t quote me on it, but I think the Magnuson time may re-map shifting? I’ve noticed less gear hunting when going up hill, even when towing. I remember coming out of death valley heading towards the California side it’s literally up hill for an hour and the truck sat right in 5th gear the whole time. Luckily it was in October so we weren’t overheating in the cab or on the motor lol.

Hey man! I had my supercharger installed back in Oct. the shop working on it was working on another 4Runner and it had a pedal commander and they said it was night and day difference from mine without. Are you running a pedal commander on yours? Plus my supercharger is only at 1700 miles and when temps dropped to 15° I noticed a pulley would make a little noise and go away when it warmed up. Now it makes the noise for a few minutes if temps drop below 40° then goes away when warmed up. Have you had any pulley noise when temps dropped?
@ToTheDirt Жыл бұрын
Congrats on the supercharger, I bet you're loving it. I'm not running a pedal commander, I like the throttle response and have never been left wanting something else. I've actually seen people left stranded on the side of the road because of issues with the PC... that's not really an option for us. We're based out of Florida, so we rarely get temps below 40 so I haven't noticed that with the cold. I've had to replace pulleys because of dust and mud intrusion into the bearings. I'd make sure you don't have anything getting into the bearings?
@willskip2795 Жыл бұрын
@@ToTheDirt thanks man! Your video helped me decide to get one. Yea I’m pretty sure it’s not dust since it only happens when it’s cold and only started when we got a cold front come through and dropped the temps to 15° a month ago then when it warmed up to 78° the pulley sound went away. It only happens on cold starts in cold weather. Tomorrow we’re back to high 30s in the mornings (crazy Houston weather). Lol. I did contacted Magnuson before I installed the kit and they said the pulleys were a supplier manufacturing problem and they’ve since updated it with the newer kits. Hopefully it won’t cause a problem. But yea I love this thing even more with the added power. I pull double waverunners and now it’s not a slug on the freeway and small climbs anymore. Haha. Even my wife who’s not a car person can tell it’s not struggling towing our skis.

Absolutely. When I didn’t have the belt connected it was a dog. We did a TON of uphill climbing and long ascents (30-45 minutes of straight uphill climbing) and the truck did so much better with the supercharger. Getting on the highway and accelerating in general was much better too.

I tow a single jetski every other week 80 miles one way and hate the gear searching when going uphill on cruise control. But $9.3k installed on a 21 is pretty painful for 80hp gain. I want it, but I am afraid of buyer’s remorse. It will be mostly daily driving for me.

@@willskip2795 I don't think you'd have any buyers remorse once you take your right foot and push down on the skinny pedal. It wakes up the 4runner and makes driving substantially more enjoyable. My only hang up on these is I wonder what it’s really doing to the motor internally. I’d like to see a 100k mile stock motor vs. a motor that has had a magnusson installed for 100k miles. Tear them down and have a look, as well as perform compression/leak down tests, etc. I’m curious how much they’re tearing stuff up that can’t really be seen until it’s pretty bad
@ToTheDirt2 жыл бұрын
IMHO I really don't think it's adding too much additional wear on the motor. The reliability of the Toyota motors can be attributed to the fact they are over built. The supercharger runs at 6psi which is on the low end of boost. It would be cool to be able to do a teardown test like that but this is my daily driver currently!
@kichaa13 Жыл бұрын
Toyota used to provide these as OEM parts. Maybe the higher power chargers would result in more wear but these engines are built with lots of headroom.
