No mention of the disaster that was plastic free packaging and how it made MIB collectors quit and retailers dealing with unprecedented scam returns. So bad that they reversed course after only 6 months but it effected 18 months of product.

In a world where vast quantities of merch is bought via pre-order through online shops, this idea that "Plastic free" boxes actually hurt sales is ridiculous on it's face. Also, G.I. It's a pretty much known in the industry that companies over produce in order to keep production costs lower, so I'm not exactly sure of the details in this case whether the investors were purposely misled about the exact quantity or it's just business as usual and being salty after the miscalculation and not wanting to suffer loss. I think the larger issue is that of Hasbro's against Disney due to the fact they basically cause damage to their own IP which is part of what's causing toy sales to suffer which would help offset the over production aspect to some degree. And due to covid causing supply issues and and increase in material costs it's possible that companies had to increase production a tad bit more than normal to minimize said cost increase. Not to mention that some factories were basically running rough shot and setting minimum unit runs or they'd go with another company that would meet their demands. There's a whole list of factors and scenarios that pretty much impacted production all at once.

Personally speaking (for Hasbro's Transformers figures), this is the experience I have had in the last three years in no particular order. Please enjoy this vertical slice of what us TF collectors have had to deal with: ~ Across most stores, TF movie (kid) merch is shelfwarming like the Marvel/Star Wars figures with full pegs and shelves. Deep clearance in about six months after first appearing. I assume this goes to liquidation stores. ~ "Mainline" Legacy figures are a wave behind and don't start staying on shelves until the *next* wave is ready for order & shipping. It's always the less desired characters that reoccur and you'd have to ask if they have (insert name) in the back. ~ Studio Series Figures fly off the shelves the fastest unless they're side characters (ex. ROTB Pablo, still on shelves now). ~ Commander Class figures and Titan Class figures ($90 and $200) have not been stocked on shelves since CoVid hit and has instilled hesitation into retailers. Only option is to order online and hope it isn't scalped at 2x price. ~ All figures listed above have no plastic to protect the figures from the "head" thieves or customizers who call dibs by ripping the head off the ball socket. This is especially common in stores without security cameras looking at the aisle. ~ Customer service in the stores doesn't give a fuck and will return figures to the shelves from guest returns. This has led to figure swaps and stolen accessories. Hasbro won't directly replace your character either, you'll get a random warehouse figure around the same price. ~ Target exclusives aren't good character-wise and the boxes have plenty of open space to steal from, so four-packs or three-packs are incomplete or swapped. On the rare times a good character does appear (ex. ROTB Optimus Prime), they get bought out or hidden somewhere in the store so scalpers can flip them. ~ Walmart exclusives get scalped pretty bad based on who's shortpacked in the wave, they only appear once and Walmart doesn't order more since they have to sell shelfwarming figures from (insert most recent movie). Shortpacked meaning less copies per shipment. ~ Online stores have stock quicker than in-person by four months. Hasbro Pulse sells out the fastest but is sketchy (service is a total rip-off at $50/yr), TFSource/BigBadToyStore have been more reliable for reserving figures on preorder days, CMDstore is the fastest out of all and that's how I got Titan Tidal Wave. ~ Additionally, Hasbro is super slow to reveal anything and it got to the point that I had Voyager Class figures in my hands right as they "revealed" them for the first time ever. We get forecasts by leakers months ahead of what's shared.

@@trevordavis5053 Walmart's been terrible about that for years. I mean, YEARS. There were exclusives 15 years ago people would get on clearance in their region, that I never saw at all in 3 to 4 Walmarts within driving distance.

I think the problem is inflation is just making toys too expensive. That just makes it that much more likely the kids will switch to video games earlier. Also losing Toys r Us to a private equity firm basically doomed to the toy industry. Walmart and Target can put a lot more pressure on them now. What they really need is economies of scale so they can build large-scale automated production lines but they just don't have them. It doesn't help it birth rates are down in every first world country so there's just fewer kids to buy toys. It's frustrating because it's so incredibly important that children get toys so they can learn imagination. Exercising your imagination leads to learning and empathy skills.

@jeremygregorio7472 well, distribution is horrible, quality is shit, shrinkage of toy sizes and prices going up constantly. Toysrus and Walmart are barely have any transformers anymore too in Canada. I give less than a year for Hasbro to start selling their IPs.

@osenator it's because Chinese labor is getting more expensive. 15 20 years ago we had borderline slave labor making our toys and while the people making our toys aren't exactly rich they're not newly as badly off as they used to be which bites in the profits hard. And because every year every company has to be substantially more profitable than the one before because of how Wall Street works you can't just run a profitable company making a good product. You have to show large growth or Wall Street eats you alive

Hasbro never saw any writing on the walls for the future of Star Wars and Marvel when they sign the exclusive contract with Disney 2015. Ummm? Scott, you completely failed to discuss what the issue actually is. What the lawsuit is about. It's not that Hasbro overproduced and ended up with excess inventory. It's not even that they failed to react to their ballooning excess inventory in a timely manner. (and lets be honest, a lot of the excess inventory showing up at Ollie's and Ross had absolutely nothing to do with COVID. It's just an excuse.) The problem. The really really big problem, is they lied to shareholders about the excess inventory. They failed to disclose the problem. And outright lied when asked about the stuff showing up at Ollie's. In forums where they are not legally allowed to do that. God help me for using Funko as the go to example of doing ANYTHING right. But for this example Funko is the go to example. When during the same time period they had warehouses full of excess product that was beyond 18-24 months old and was not going to sell, they disclosed this on an earnings call. Took the massive write down, and publicly destroyed the excess product. They landfilled it. We made fun of them. Everybody pointed fingers and laughed. But what they did was actually proper. And they seem to be in a much better place today. Whereas Hasbro and our old friend Chris Cocks hid Hasbro's ballooning inventory from the shareholders. And in some cases from the employees. Hasbro apparently has warehouses full of shit that were not disclosed on the financials. This is bad. Really Bad. They have been trying to piecemeal run this inventory down by dumping it to Ollie's etc, so as not to fully reveal just how big the problem is to the investors. But in the process they trained their core collector customers to look for all of their stuff cheap. The "Ollie's Effect". Which caused the news to get out, and major investors to start asking questions. This is a really big scandal.

Not all movie franchises are toyetic. But franchises based off of superheroes like Marvel and DC it would dumb not to put out merch. The toy companies have no control of the quality of the movie they're just doing the product. Keep in mind they're making toy lines for toddlers all the way to adult collectors. No responsible parent is going to buy their child a Marvel Legends, they're going to get the cheap 5POA figures and 12" figures. Kids arent reading comics and there's no cartoon to promote those versions of the characters so the movies are it. Video games are 50-50 in terms of the character designs.

@@BatFan1 A lot of recent Marvel movies haven't been very toyetic though. The costumes are becoming blander and all very samey. The Eternals for instance and Shang Chi. They all look like they have the same outfit but in different colors. Then the increase in female superheroes which have never sold action figures as well as male characters.

My only question is & has been if they allowed cancelations by Diamond, EE, etc around the pandemic? Allocation closed an incredibly high amount of toy stores & comic stores and it took a while (and alot of store closings) before distributors allowed the stores to cancel orders. And you know they did not want to but saw the apolocolypse in front of their nose. So if Hasbro DID allow cancelations and ended up stuck with product and then lied to shareholders, then they will pay. To make a point, allocation causes companies to over-order by large amounts because they only get around 10-to-40% of what they order i.e order 100x SnakeEyes to get 15x. So during pandemic stores started actually getting the large amounts of stuff they ordered and it came all at once, creating an economic hardship for the ma & pop stores. Just in case that part was unclear. I'd love to hear details on this, Scott. It would paint a much clearer picture for the newer Ollie's/Ross'/discount store world were living in...and more.

I am a little curious as to when the Ollie's bubble will burst. As some Marvel Legends waves are not hitting Walmart or Target are they going to end up overproduced? Will production level off in the next year so that we don't see Ollies and Ross being overrun with stuff for the 2025 Christmas season or will 2026 be the year that it normalizes for lack of a better term? I know it is all speculation right now, but I am interested in what people think about it.

I think it will burst. years ago, Marshalls and TJ Maxx were getting good stuff, now I never visit them. ROSS is raved about. They finally opened one in my county and I was so disappointed. both by stock and the fact it's just another store that every local reseller and collector will hit before I do.

Great content as always. Scott, have u ever talked about why there is such a difference in terms of value and figure accessories between 6" GI Joe and SW figures? IMO: We pay too much for the SW figures and get less pack ins.
@shawnstark7622
@shawnstark7622 Ай бұрын
It's due to the Star Wars licensing fee being high, very high compared to say Marvel even. Hasbro 100% owns the G.I. Joe IP thus no fee to pay which means they're able to pack more value into the package at $25 the price point. There's also the matter of built in mold reuse with Joes that isn't as abundant within Star Wars except for trooper type characters, or ones where said reuse can be hidden if it's not entirely accurate.

Hascrap has lost its mind because of the classified series. Simple. Emily and Lenny are running the company into the ground.100 employees played off?! Wtf?! And what's up with Mattel bothering with the thundercats? Isn't super 7 doing a good enough job? They've finally got a Lionel with a ball jointed waist. This is good. @machineman6498 all I can report to you is that I was the first hascrap pulse member. Bought a couple of things. Got snake eyes off the site, then I pre-ordered that blue variant cobra commander, waited,then waited for about two years. By that time Lenny and piggy got started blabbing about the classified. By then I emailed hascrap pulse about a time frame for delivery. They get back to me telling me I had to pay again for the cobra commander. I get back at them telling me they were going to charge me even though I called customer service on the phone, and they ended up billing me 3 fucking times. 89$!!! Wtf ?! I had to cancel my debit card twice!!! U do the math. That piggy bitch is a fucking crook. Never doing business with them again 😃🤔
