not everyone on the internet likes to see religious stuff but even as a christian i admire how you dont shy away from showing such interesting sites as these buddhist temples, id never seen such historical korean architecture that hadnt yet been fully renovated and repainted, as only the redone stuff gets photographed usually. but seeing those "rundown" older buildings was quite beautiful in its own way. Id love to see more of what other religions have done around korea in their architecture and such. another great video though, counting down the days to my trip in april!

Tip: there are some very small temples on mountain sides, close to cities or a hike away from them that are very authentic. You may stumble upon them by accident. For example a temple in a cave, just rock, hardly visible, but very elaborate inside with gold, candles, paintings and statues. We didn’t go in because a man was praying there for a long time and we didn’t want to disturb him.
@lostthenfoundАй бұрын
@mach1neg thanks a lot for watching and for the kind words! We also really loved looking at the older more traditional style buildings, and Tongdosa had such an amazing atmosphere that I think everyone can enjoy. The temple near Songnisan (속리산) called Beobjusa (법주사) also has a really old looking pagoda that's interesting if you ever end up around there. Must be getting excited to head over here. All the best with planning and hope you have an amazing trip!

Happy relationship anniversary! So glad to see a return of the random spinner, it's how I discovered your channel in the Seoul Metro series, and such a great concept. As a noted temple and hillwalking enthusiast, this was especially great to watch. I mean you're doing something right if you run into a random gang of classical guitarists, haha. Great to hear a description of the big three Korean temples including Tongdosa which I have also had the good fortune to visit. It's hard to communicate the privilege it is for believers such as myself (full disclosure) to be near relics believed to be from the historical Buddha, and I'm really grateful you guys present that setting with such sensitivity. Slight tangent-- I love the fact that I have pictures of my devoted Presbyterian halmoni (grandma) enthusiastically visiting Tongdosa and Bulguksa-- for a lot of Koreans (in my experience) the diversity of Korean religion and non-religion throughout history is a strength. I hope that tolerance can continue and strengthen for a long time. Whoops, wrote a novel. Great video as always! Take care

@jkang7265 thank you very much for all of your support! Really glad that Ulju-gun was up your alley, as it is such a beautiful area, and I can't believe nobody ever told me about it before haha. Also Korea has some of the most precious and special temples I've ever seen. They are so powerful, and we are so fortunate and lucky to be able to visit these places. Also that's so awesome that you have photos of your Grandma visiting Tongdosa and Bulguksa! Also totally agree that Korea is quite respectful when it comes to tolerating its different religions/non-religions. It's always interesting especially during holidays or things like funerals to see different families using different customs, and they don't force each other to do things that go against their ways. A lot of beauty in that which a lot of the world could learn from. Thanks a lot for sharing, and have a great day!

Many temples, including Tongdosa, have well-established "templestay" programs where you can sample some of the monastic life and schedule. I don't want to come across as a missionary, so I'll emphasize that these programs are absolutely for everybody whose interest in temples may be cultural, historical, or some other POV not necessarily religious. Worth a google if you're curious, quite a bit of English resources out there thankfully!

@classickdramaclips thanks so much for watching and for all your support! Ah that's interesting to hear about Ulsan's history, and you're right I think that 경주 is one of the origins of the Kim Clan. I think there are a few other places with Kim Clans too. Hahah 노비 side too eh! Your ancestors must have worked hard to get your family to where it is today! That's so cool how Koreans can trace their history back like that though. Would be super interesting to learn about!

I’ve never been to Korea, so I’m really enjoying your videos. I’m a vegetarian that don’t eat meats, but I do eat eggs and dairy. Are there plant based options available at most restaurants?
@lostthenfound28 күн бұрын
@@JudyJean-gi1ty thanks a lot for watching! Korea is not super easy for vegetarians to be honest because even a lot of the vegetable side dishes use seafood products to make the marinades and sauces. However, in the cities that tourists visit (Seoul, Busan, Jeju, Gyeongju, Jeonju, etc) there are definitely restaurants that cater to vegetarians luckily. It might just take a bit of research on Naver Maps and Google Maps in advance to find the restaurants.

Hey, planning to ski in seoul in January, which ski resorts do u recommend in terms of convenience and price? We are a group of 6 intermediate skiers needing rentals with no korean language skill or korean credit card😅 Loved all your ski resorts videos but just couldn’t make up our mind, thanks!
@lostthenfound16 күн бұрын
@resurate7603 for intermediate skiers I think it'd be worth it to make a little overnight trip to Yongpyong instead of the resorts nearby Seoul. It has a little village attached to the resort so you could easily take a bus from Seoul, rent skis there, and then enjoy your time after skiing as well. If you want to ski for the day near Seoul, I'd just pick Elysian. It's not amazing or anything, but it's just as good as the other resorts nearby and typically less crowded on weekdays.

I've been to that rest stop. Food wasn't great when I was there, and a lot of the stuff in there was tied to a gaudy Christian wealth doctrine stuff. Not a huge fan of the spot, but it was nice to see something familiar.

Nice video. I know this is probably old hat, or maybe you have some older vids I've not seen, but have you guys ever done any urban exploration? Maybe abandoned places. I used to watch MikeInKorea (Michael Arnold) back in the mid to late 00s before visiting Korea, he had some fascinating videos, even just riding around on the subway.
@lostthenfoundАй бұрын
@Protonoto1 thanks so much! We've made videos where we picked a random subway station in the Greater Seoul Area exploring around which included some abandoned places, but it would be cool to do more "raw" style exploration videos as well just exploring the streets without much editing. I stumble around my words so much when we film (hence the reliance on tons of voiceovers), so I'm not sure how exciting it will be though! 🤣 Btw I'll check out his videos as it's cool to go back in time like that!

Because I grew up conservative Christian, my parents never took me to temples in Korea. When my wife I visit Japan, we always go to a temple. I am now a pastor but every relgion interests me. When I visit Korea again, I will definitely make an effort to visit some temples. The only thing is I am not thst into hikes although I grew up taking hikes up to the mountain to get mountain water. That group of guitarist was so wholesome. It reminded me of when we were in Japan, a cafe had live music and at one point everyone were singing together. They invited my wife and I to play guitar and sing and we did. One of the best travel experiences I have ever had.
@lostthenfoundАй бұрын
@DanLee8884 that's great to hear, and visiting the temples in Korea is really amazing because a lot of them are in really nice locations where you can go on a little walk through the forest (just avoid the ones on top of mountains! haha). Also that must have been a really cool experience in the cafe in Japan! Can't imagine how it must have felt to play guitar and sing in front of a bunch of strangers in a cafe! Haha. Thanks a lot for sharing, and take care!
