I lived in Hawaii for 10+ years. I flew Hawaiian most often (HNL, ITO, KOA, LIH) and found them to be utilitarian for most inter-island flights using DC9's, B717's.. Flights to the Mainland were generally on DC-10's. Some flights had genuine Hawaiian warmth, others were cattle-car experiences. Go to the islands often, you WILL FLY Hawaiian. My favorite Island airline is Mokulele Air which flies to smaller airfields throughout the islands using Cessna 208B Grand Caravan aircraft. With maybe 8 passengers in the aircraft you get up close and personal with the pilots. Slower, maybe, but you get a real aviation experience!
@jimandmandy4 жыл бұрын
I prefer Mokulele, but the average person expects a big traditional airliner, TSA hassles, etc. Decades ago I flew interisland on Royal Hawaiian with piston engined Cessna twins. Felt like a private charter. Single pilot operation. If you let the pilot know you had a pilot certificate, you could sit up front.

Southwest Airlines is starting to dominate the inter-island flight now. Hawaiian still has more frequent flights . Well they did pre-covid. But now its about equal. Sadly Hawaiian was price gouging flights for many years since they held a monopoly and tried to discredit SW Air. The deal here is that those aircraft probably have the right physical size and capacity for the operation they serve, especially since this is a short hop operation that they see in Hawaii. The 737-700 is a bit heavier and wider as well. The wing span itself could actually be demanding remodeling of airports, and that's something that has to be taken into account as well.

Had very nice 717 flights on Hawaiian from Honolulu to kona. Interestingly kona has no terminal! Everything is outdoors. You wait under wooden shelters and board via airstairs. I understand newer planes would have issues with hawaiian’s duty cycles. Something about the engines not spending enough time at cruise, something the 717 has less trouble with. This may only be a rumor, but one of the reasons they’re holding on to the discontinued planes so fervently.
@AZbarbu14 жыл бұрын
KOA Kona does have terminals, but they are outdoors, under thatched shelters. Waiting areas are patios between those shelters. I think it has a certain charm, but it gets very crowded for the late evening rush when most airlines have overnight flights to many mainland destinations. New terminals are in the planning stages which will hopefully keep some of the Hawaiian charm. Aloha.

Hope they can keep them for another 10 years, but wouldn't be surprised to see them slowly retiring them and replacing them with E-Jets, A220s, or even A320neos.

Can you do a video on how small planes cross the Atlantic? Its really fascinating, but also tense

I always wondered why Hawaii didn't go with the ATR 72 turboprop for interisland as it's a fuel sipper. That's what most of Asia uses to access many small regional islands. Between the two I prefer flying on the Douglas, it's smoother.

My parent love Hawaiian. They have Hawaiian miles card. They use their miles for flights to California. I have flown with Hawaiian twice recently. Both times was via Airbus A330. One was a 10 hour flight from Honolulu to Kansai International in Japan Second was a 5 and a half hour flight from Honolulu to San Diego. The flight to Japan is very long. I payed a little extra to get Premium Economy and I picked the row that was right behind businesses class. That means infinite leg room. The seats themselves are no different than the regular economy seats. They have very little cushion. 10 hour flight on those seats are not ideal. If you sit in that very front row of premium economy gives you that leg room but the in entertainment and meals become worse than standard economy. The reason is both tray and tv come out of the left hand rest. The tray is so flimsy and has a bend in the middle. It makes eating inflight meals or snacks worse than regular economy. The TV does not come out all the way. To watch the inflight entertainment, you have to hunch over to the left to view the screen. To get a better experience. I recommend getting premium economy but not front row. The San Diego flight I picked the same seat as the Japan flight going to San Diego. At the time that was the only seat available. No choice as it was a flight for work. I was fortunate to get a seat premium economy on my return trip that was not in the front row. It’s a better trade off. Good leg room. Since there is a seat in front of me. The TV is at the optimal location, front and center, and the tray is the normal tray not the flimsy one.

Never flown with Hawaiian but flown on the magnificent MD95/b717. I would never change that for an Airbus... strange that the best plane made by Boeing is a McDonnel-Douglas!

Past-tense: "was" made by Boeing. It's too bad they discontinued it.
