You should check out Deep Rock Galactic too if you want a live service game where people buy the cosmetic dlc just because they feel guilty not giving them more money than the initial price. It's even like you're still playing Helldivers but with tunneling underground.

Deep rock is ok. Similar but very different and nowhere near as good. I was getting claustrophobic playing it at one point and had to shut it off. The npc bugs arent that great either.

I've played the game for 70 hours, and earned enough to buy the premium battlepass and still have enough left over to get something from the premium shop. And better yet, the game isn't stingy at all (like some titles I could name) about handing you premium currency in-game. I've only got about 30% of my premium currency from the battlepass itself, everything else has been through exploring the map and finding little treasure spots. Helldivers 2 isn't one of those games that goes "well TECHNICALLY you can get premium currency by just playing" and instead gives you a trickle so insignificant you barely register it's there, no. It's very easy to get, it just takes a little bit of time and effort, and the game is very generous when you do put that time in to go treasure hunting in giving you battlepass-currency or premium currency. When you find it, you aren't thinking "FINALLY I found something! Too bad it's not nearly enough to unlock anything worthwhile!" Instead you're thinking "Oh cool, free Medals, I'll have enough to get that new gun I want when I complete this mission."

The only live service games I like are the "The Crew" games, and maybe Forza Horizon - because there's something new every week, but it takes only 2 hours to do it, and there's no time consuming battle passes. Other than that I have resolved to completely ignore any and all attempts by games to sell me MTX, use FOMO tactics or make me play when I don't want to. I'm super done with having my free time being dictated by game companies. I want to be able to play games and work on things in games on my own schedule. Truth be told I hardly played any actual live service games, but it's time to stop that.

The problem with live service games is that they are as difficult to make as mmos, and just like with mmos back in the day, they all ripped off wow and died. Now it's happened with everyone ripping off destiny and warframe, but both of those games were made by veteran studios that had pioneered the genre so of course they knew how to make a good live service shooter. We will eventually get to the point we are now with mmos where a few big games dominate and some smaller ones survive, but there will be a lot of more failures and layoffs along the way.

Also, an interesting thing with the battle pass is that the free one gives you 800 credits of the 1000 you need for the premium. And in an hour of trying the game by myself in the easiest smallest maps i got 100 credits. By the time i get the 800 free credits ill already have the rest for just playing.

The term Live Service is both a blessing and curse. It makes piracy challenging but not impossible. Like all forms of code there's vulnerabilities. Live services require one thing, internet access. I'm not going to ignore previous games that are such. Diablo 3, League of Legends, Torchlight Infinite, pretty much any game you have to connect with other people and only other people. Helldivers 2 seems to be that one game that people have fun despite the blunders. I've killed players and been killed by players in combat. I've lost missions. I've played by myself and gotten overwhelmed. Despite this the game is fun. There's a need for more content but for what's currently available it'll keep you busy for a while. Missions have a time limit. This prevents players from wandering the map for too long. I should do a review of this game.

Another good thing about the “Battlepass” is that it’s not really a battlepass. It’s more of a permanent expansion to the shop. You don’t need to rush to unlock anything. They are just going to add more on top of it, instead of replacing it soon to force you to grind it.
