🚨PART FOUR: • The Nazis in Power | T... 🚨
🚨PART ONE: • The Nazis in Power | T... 🚨
“No one can doubt that this world will one day be the scene of dreadful struggles for existence on the part of mankind. In the end, the instinct of self-preservation alone will triumph.”
Hitler has been planning for war since 1928. However, the Treaty of Versailles has placed immense limitations on his ability to rearm Germany, and he must first overcome internal enemies, whether the SA or the communists. He will then need to build-up the Nazi war machine, to allow him to expand the Third Reich and gain his much-desired lebensraum, “living space”. But with Germany facing economic decline, will Hitler’s push for rearmament provide a solution to the economy’s manifold problems? Or will the Führer simply use foreign policy coups as a smokescreen, to hide the dire straits facing the German people? Hitler can be certain of one thing - Britain and France do not want another war…
Join Tom and Dominic in the third part of our series on the Nazis in Power, as they look at how Hitler, both materially and ideologically, prepared the country for war, and, as a brilliant opportunist, preyed on the Allies’ weaknesses in order to complete his rearmament of Germany.

I'm really enjoying the video versions of the podcast - I do think the images add to the the impact. I have to confess that I usually binge the episodes when they become available, and am enjoying revising the episodes again by watching them in addition.

Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is simply amazing - one of the best history chronicles I've ever read. Why do you think Churchill was able to recognize so early what Hitler was?
@kieranororke620
@kieranororke620 6 ай бұрын
Churchill initially felt that Hitler might be a good thing for Germany, capable of dragging it out of the mire it had got itself into and becoming a strong bulwark against Soviet style Bolshevism. However, on observing Nazi behaviour following Hitler's accession to power, his inherent liberal social values and his affection for Jewish culture and people he then quickly recognised the obscene nature of Nazism and the rest is...as they say.

The annoying thing about this series is that they keep injecting comments or phrasing things in ways to criticise modern day conservatives. This episode had constant references to “Make Germany Great Again” - never have I heard that before in the context of Nazi Germany. It’s clearly an a Trump reference. In another episode they compare Thatcher to Hitler. While the historical representation appears fairly straightforward and wide-ranging, this inability to distinguish between their own views on Conservative politicians and Nazis really impacts their authority to present sound history.
@plebius
@plebius 8 ай бұрын
The first time I saw that comparison was, and I had to check it. 2016. An article about Hitler from 1934 had that line in it. In that article from 1934, it says "Adolf Hitler, out of prison, took advantage of the groans. He told people that he would make Germany “great” again." So maybe they are aware of the original source. You can find it all online if you go looking. Search for Uncle Rays Corner Modern Leaders of men 1934, for the original article. It is well worth reading even now. It may be the case they weren't referencing Trump at all. That they were just using the campaign slogan he was using in 1934.
@Conorp77
@Conorp77 8 ай бұрын
Although not a campaign slogan, Hitler did indeed use the phrase 'make Germany great again' more than once, and it was the essence of his mission in his own eyes.

@@Conorp77 please refer to the speeches where he did. Regardless, the point is obviously to tie Trump to him in the modern context, which is beyond the pale.

Do you ever talk about an important thing fascist and liberal regimes have in common, i.e. anti-communism i.e. containing the Sovjet Union? What other reason could their be for Britain being tolerant towards Germany's rearmerment and such?

A correction Austria had never been part of the German Reich. Most of the German states had been originally in the Holy Roman Empire and headed by the Austrian emperor . But from1806/14 modern Austria was inside the Austrian empire after 1867 the Austro-Hungarian empire.

So does he not have at least some justification to try and end the treaty of Versailles??
@ltmund
@ltmund 7 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Does he have a point about uniting the oppressed German people into one state, maybe. Does he have a point that racial identity is the most important and determines character. That humans can be bred like thoroughbred horses? Nope. First proved by being defeated by the unison of all races. Then proved wrong again by science's advances in genealogy.

Hard to disagree with that opening quote really, considering the decline of the self-hating bleeding heart west; and considering the situation in weimar germany at the time. You don't know what you'll do till you're put under pressure; to cross 110th St. is a helluva tester.
