I couldn’t believe what I was reading. The Emperor personally knew these Custodians, probably spent most of his time with them, and other than the primarchs and Malcador were the closest thing to what could be his friends. It broke my heart when he was trying to save one of them from being swallowed by a demon wall, and the custodian was screaming :/

And Horus was already insecure and distrustful of his brothers, he was just very good at hiding his ufly side. At the end what turned him during the visions was more the idea of being forgotten, it was his hubris. Also keep in mind that even without Erebus, Horus was already walking to rebellion (the whole Malkador situation and the resentment he had hidden showed that even without Chaos he would most likely rised in rebellion)

What a lot of people in the comments don’t understand is the Custodes we’re essentially in the warp and Horus at this point is on the verge of becoming the fifth Chaos God with all the powers of the other 4 behind him. The Custodes were not the only ones to fall, even Rogal Dorn is close to being turned by the Blood God when the assault on the Vengeful Spirit occurs.

However, he is currently attempting to create the perfect humans (and doing a pretty darn good job), simply decides not to believe in the chaos gods (as demonstrated in the book Primogenitor, where he tells either a keeper of secrets or a lord of change he simply doesn't believe they exist, and it caused them to get banished from the ship), plays a game of 4D chess second only to Tzeentch, and if Warhammer: Inquisitor is to be considered canon, has created a human that can literally non-exist a daemon. Not kill them. Non-exist them entirely. He also runs his own apothecary colleges for any chaos legions who are interested (also demonstrated in Primogenitor).

Just to clarify, not one Custodian fell to Chaos. Horus was the most powerful Chaos Entity in existence outside the Chaos Gods, and a Psycker nearly on par with ths Emperor himself. He controlled thier bodies and forced them to fight as marionettes, those that had the mental strength and sheer force of will to keep control of thier bodies were left in complete unimaginable agony as Horus twisted thier very bones. Those who could not fight back Horus's hold had thier minds fully intact, but locked behind impenetrable psychic barriers, forcing them to watch as thier body turns on thier brothers and thier Emperor. People forget that to Horus, a Custodes may as well have been an Imperial Guardsman

Full Chaos Horus was technically more powerful than the Emperor himself at that point (until the Emperor went absolutely God Mode). It was absolutely wild how completely overpowered he became. It's crazy how according to legend, the Emperor didn't control+alt+delete Horus after he killed Sanguinius, but only after Horus vaporized a charging Guardsman. Although the fact that the mortal Guardsmen wasn't controlled by Chaos on board of the Vengeful Spirit definitely speaks for his undaunted, noble and indomitable character. Considering that even Custodes were reduced to lowly pawns.

Yet in the last few months I learned Horus corrupted custodes and Slaanesh corrupted a Grey Knight. Not really sure what to believe anymore, I kinda liked the idea of the Custodes being uncorruptable.

Looking at the actual exposition in Part 2 of The End & The Death, what really had happened is that the Custodes who were handpicked to go with the Emperor have been thrown into a situation in which they were NOT accustomed to deal with, which disrupted the muscle memory of their own Modus Operandi in combat operations. This resulting drop of their mental guard gave Horus and the 4 Chaos Gods their opening to use their powers to control the Custodes guarding the Emperor! Is it of any wonder why the Custodes in the 40K era wear their shroud of shame?

If the custodes couldn't be killed then the setting itself would have no point. The custodes are highly resistant to chaos and nearly immune to it, BUT The setting in this story is the vengeful spirit WITH avatars of ALL of the chaos gods onboard. These aren't lower level daemons, these are nearly full fledged chaos gods aboard the vessel. This is why the custodes were able to be confused.

The point of the Custodians us they are immune to corruption. Recently, we see this with Idomtus fleet 4, which is almost completely corrupted apart from the Custodians, Grey Knights, and Sisters of Silence. It's silly to see them corrupted

The Custodes weren't technically corrupted by chaos. They knew what they were doing but had no control over their actions, which greatly disturbed and upset them. It adds that "Holy shit!" Factor. Horus is a complete prick to turn our favourite golden boys into puppets.
