How effective is Wing Chun Chain Punch?
I personally use chain punch as a finisher or a follow up. My setup to chain punch is when my critical distance becomes close enough for me grapple or control the guy. I also have a few other setups using boxing combination into a chain punch.
Let me know what you think of it in the comment section below!

Just found your channel last week, and I've been practicing Chinese Martial Arts since like I was in 4th grade back in 2007. Have applied Wing Chun to my arsenal too, and have been practicing for like 7 years now. I am absolutely loving how you are teaching Wing Chun Kevin! Giving it an angle towards every form of combat, or street fight which can possibly arise for anyone. You're giving it a great angle and keeping it authentic. ❤️🗡️💪🏻

Fantastic. Great analysis and brainstorm of the ranges and angles, and ideas for follow up strikes. It makes a lot of sense to save the shorter punches for the mid or close range, and can blend grabs, elbow, jamming, etc. When able, that bursting leap forward JKD punch can be quick opening, then add more. Seeing you discussing principles of boxing, wing chun, muay thai, etc. helps round out multiple skills. Thank you for taking the time to make this and other videos.

Nice break down well done demo. We use different entry techniques in Cheung style WC to close the gap to apply chain punching. Chain punching straight in can be a disaster! That’s where the check hooks live! Chain punching “It’s high risk high reward “ when not applied properly.

Great teachings. One thing i remember from Wing Chun training was the emphasis on keeping your shoulders straight (on line) when doing chain punching (and other moves), this makes punching much faster than having to twist your upper body like you do when punching in boxing or muay thai.

I would say do a stun blow and quickly follow up with a chain punch to provide maximum damage. Get in and get out. No one wants to go toe to toe for a long period of time. Explosive aggressive attacks can be a game changer.

So unless you are facing a trained fighter most people kind of freak out when someone slams into them chain punching and your bic bo is hitting their shin. But if your attacker starts circling and rests his elbows on his chest, no chain punching, wait for them to move in..great teaching and drills Sifu, I thing all WC folks should learn some boxing and takedown defenses

This is my personal experience in wing chun. I have been training wing chun for almost 4 years, I am in Biu Jee, and a few months ago I sparred with a friend who is a kickboxer, he broke my face hahaha and that led me to first understand that I am very technical but in the chaos of the fight the technique is lost sometimes, especially due to stress. So I decided to start Sanda and also study ground techniques, honestly I feel much more prepared for a real fight now. Sparring gave me the experience that I lacked and I can apply wing chun in moments that wing chun really works. Wing chun sincerely changed my life and made me be constant and feel passion for something, I think that is the most important thing in any martial art, that it makes you happy. Greetings and sorry for the length of the message.

@@leandro5840 thanks for sharing your experience. I was interested in knowing how a pure wing chun practicioner does against the western fighting styles. I guess it's more meant for spontaneus close combat without gloves. I imagine a TKD fighter would destroy a WC fighter in an arranged match simply due to the range advantage.

I used to use the VT chain punch exclusively...until I got my ass handed to me by kickboxers in sparring. Nowadays, I use it like a Muay Thai elbow. EXCLUSIVELY a close range weapon to attack soft targets.

@socialist-strong Ай бұрын
Any technique used exclusively becomes easy to counter... like rock paper scissors if I know your strategy is always "go paper". Of course, some masters can break scissors with paper, but for most of us, we have to carefully choose the right tool for the job.

I'd like to respectfully point out that the demonstration punch was executed with a tight arc and was aimed at the chin; when the Bil Da was demonstrated, the punch had a wider arc and was aimed at the side of instructors' head. Most people, even untrained assailants, want to put the business end of the arm, their fist, on their victims targets. So even sloppy punchers will tighten the arc of their punches. And driving forward to execute the Bil Da against a tightly arced punch would take exquisite timing; likely get you knocked out. And it would be very dangerous against a taller person.

Without structure the chain punch is not a finisher. It just becomes a distraction like in JKD. With structure it’s probably over in the first few punch’s and the guy falls out from under you. The power is in the structure.

This is true. However: A) Dai SiFu is in Turkey for the time being and the odds of him returning stateside at the moment is low. B) he’s near 60 and honestly has already proven his system. At this point it shouldn’t be just on him to prove the validity of his art. It’s on all of us, his students C) as a student of his, I agree with your stance on the use of wedging. But wedging seems to be a predominately WT (Leung Ting Lineage) tactic. I don’t think I’ve encountered any ppl outside the line who wedges with their chainpunches But it’s also undeniable that a lot of WC ppl get knocked the F out charging in out of range and with bad timing. Their hesitancy to rely of chainpunching is understandable. Other lineages have answers based on their experience, trials and solutions. One thing I’ll applaud my other WC brothers for is unlike other CMA practitioners, we are more open and flexible with experimenting and adapting to address the current climate of martial arts 🥋

In some countries they refer to Wing Chun “chain punching” as “piston punching.” The reason they do this, is because some users with bad habits simply roll their punches, one hand over the other in a circular motion to the point where it’s no longer a chain punch and is totally ineffective. You need to punch through each punch like a piston… When “arrow walking” and piston punching cooperatively, Wing Chun still requires grounded power and you shouldn’t shuffle towards your enemy with tiny little 8 inch steps. It should be a rapid and commanding attack with the distance closed explosively in tandem with actually landing the punches. Make your sparring partner wear a padded chest guard and simply punch that as you drive through him. This guy probably needs his student to have a longer pole as he didn’t want to hurt him for the benefit of this video, or alternatively wear head gear and gloves… but the conclusion is we now have a representation of Wing Chun that looks awkward and a bit ridiculous.

If you hit with just three knuckles you will explode your wrist. Even boxers don’t do this and they are some of the greatest strikers. This is why wing tsun doesn’t work in real combat.

Proof of the pudding is in the eating. WC chain punch will not work against trained boxer, particularly muaythai fighters. WC fatal flaws are not keeping the chin tucked ( muaythai calls this floating head), guard jaws with shoulder, and keep the hands up. WC punches are also weak. Vertical fist cannot be compared with boxing power punches.
