Do you think Wing Chun chain punch is effective? Let me know what you think!

As you said, once you get inside and have already hit them once 3-5 chain punches to drive them back (or into a wall) can certainly be effective.

Definitely effective, normally use it as a finisher on combos myself or a diversion to set up another shot when it comes to sparring. Whether to the body or getting some strikes to the throat multiple punches are always effective

My first experience with mma, Wing Chun was part of the curriculum. In sparring, once a guy basically pushed me straight to the end of the sparring space by chain punching me in the chest (nice of him to not go for the head). But even against my chest, it was pretty disorienting. It knocked my breathing all out of wack. And he kept driving in and I couldn't get my composure or disengage properly. To be fair, I'm not good now and I was definitely worse then, but still like there's a time and place. You're probably right, I don't think more than 5 punches is all that realistic, but it's probably not even needed. You can get what you need from it within 5 seconds anyways. Ended up not following through with mma. Wasn't a big of kicks. But did a bit of boxing and bjj separately after that. AnywaysI feel like the shoeshine combo (3 alternating uppercuts) in boxing is really similar to chain punching

I practiced it at home a few times and at work my workmate got flustered when I did it and is much bigger than me. Think it's good to create distance when they are right in your face. So if you're actually trained I can't see why not

Boxing has flusters and shoeshining, which are matbe more tactical tools, you hardly can end fights with them. Seems to me that this whole video is more about correct punching mechanics rather than this pretty obscure technique, and perhaps that’s the real use of it: as a training tool, rather than as something you necessarily plan to use in a fight. After all, teaching the correct and proper punching mechanics is unbelievably hard. Some people get it right away, some people never seem to learn it.

I love that he's actually teaching Wing Chun in a more practical stance. Most people try to overdo the traditional square stance and they always end up making Wing Chun look weak. But this guy makes it look a lot like Western boxing

His lineage believes that the traditional stance is for training more than anything else. The way I had it explained is “if you can throw the punch in this awkward way, you can do it in a normal stance too”

Hi Kevin, Enjoyed your video, have seen quite a few wing chun videos, must say, yours is one of the best, really makes sense and I completely agree with your training etc, I have seen a lot of what you teach , and it is all very proper way to teach wing chun. I used to study and practice wing chun amongst other martial arts from age 8 I'm now 42 years old, I studied at various schools, exhibitions with masters in attendance, Don the Dragon Wilson, Eric Lee, William Chung, Master Wong. If I still done martial arts I would certainly train at your academy and maybe even with you. I support your video and enjoy watching very much. Thank you for your time. :)

When I train straight blast I train it generally as the opening moment of a fight when the verbal confrontation becomes physical. So I go from a squared off stance with the hands up in the "I don't want trouble" pose and then snap it out from there (presumably against an aggressive, but unprepared opponent). I'll train singles, doubles, and triples from that position. When I do triples, I'll sidestep/open pivot to the leading side, so it becomes sort of like a cross between a chain punch and a check hook after which I could trap or withdraw to boxing range. I'm mostly self taught, so my wing chun is pretty trashy -- its really gratifying to see that what I'm doing is sort of like yours.

Tactically the idea really is to initiate a continuous wave of energy that penetrates and does not cease... How that's done is what the system is all about & essentially what it explores...

The chain punch can be super effective if it's used on someone who is off balance or if used on something soft like the throat but I don't see a fight starting and ending with it. Maybe if it was someone like a powerhouse boxer but I doubt they would ever do it, I just imagined Mike Tyson trying it out and it would likely devastate the target but I'd like to see his face while he was being told to try it lol.

Okay sometime Kevin was doing a rolling punch(goes downward instead of a up and he then complained about it 🤣 ( they are done for going down and uses of gravity against alot of strength compared to the vertical) you will see the difference in movement in the hips alot when they wanna push forward during battle punch with it, arm wise it's a small adjustment to change a vertical to a rolling one so they works great together with like going higher or lower in ur striking or countering. personally use it in sparring for the solar plexus it litterally stuns someone back at every hit since ur two top knuckle hits for less contact time for more a small point of energie transfer (middle one and then top one) rather than the 3 bottom from middle to pinky of the vertical punch that drives trough ppl more. The rolling punches are more likely to cause small fractures in the face especially during the overhand version of it (very little contact time without gloves and alot more rotations power than just straith) Vertical is Def can be used In more ways (rolling punches are good for hitting the solar plexus/face from a high hand guard and the side of the knee,liver when lower) while the vertical is better while going upwards from a lower positions it's alot harder to do adjustments to higher strikes and often will lead to you needing to deflect with ur elbows get ur face protected witb ur second hand (ur last resort in term of countering) and slip any high strikes just like you would when doing a vertical and getting a hook to the ribs that's lower. Same motions inverted litterally Ur vertical can also be used sideways as a sort of cross way/hook/uppercut on the outside but also often used when adjusting to missed strikes or parry. the overhand rolling punch is used to repair a fucked up vertical parry where another vertical ain't possible bc you'll get hit so you deflect with ur elbows (all the defence i said ealier) and used the downward motions to slip left or rigth and overhand. The mixing of the vertical and rolling Def helps to repair ur fuck up in countering and reuses ur currently bad positions and counterforce for countering again (I'll never stop countering every hit I swear 🤬) The more I look at his wing chun, the more i feel like his trainer didn't have the full 'curriculum" with the ground grappling and clinch work that's excellent in its mix of striking and grappling (lots of uses of strikes to help ur grappling since it helps for counterforce, uses of legs on the ground for defence(the usual stuff pretty much) and offense (kicks,trips,pressure on weak points like the head, neck,groint,or any joints) small adjustments against locks and chokes like using ur fingers to make small gaps for air and release pressure to get time against locked in chokes.

I had to do something and came back to correct small mistake and explained it better. But its litterally just up and down movement being the key difference 👌 and knuckle placement for best uses of it. But knowing how to switch between both is so crucial since it's a spit second and generates counterforce
@nicolasbouchard6331
@nicolasbouchard6331 2 жыл бұрын
A good way to practice ur counter force training uppercuts to overhand or vice versa and for sideways movement it hook/elbow to backfist/back elbow and its all done with the same arm to practice ur smaller rotations and speed of attacks rather than rigth hook to a left hook that has bigger rotation but slower. So you train rotation power over short range that still applies to longer ranged rotations while also training ur arm at being used for more than a single attack while in close range of ur opponents Bonus tips a wc back elbow to a backfist done super tightly and close to ur body with big hip rotations works great too in close range but also still applies to long ranged elbows and backfist

Completely new to Wing Chun, don't quite understand why you want to be driving through punch, connecting when the elbow is still bent and then straightening out after the impact, doesn't the rest of your power after that just get rendered to pushing rather than hitting hard?
@jonharker9028
@jonharker9028 Жыл бұрын
It’s a general striking concept, not unique in my experience to Wing Chun. Pushing engages the muscles differently. I’ll try to explain it: For a move with no damage, I can throw my hand out like a jab, but with loose fingers and turn it into a tap on the shoulder. Same with the cross, or the 1-2 combo. It’s not gonna hurt the other person, because there’s no tension in the muscles and it’s at the limits of how far my hand can reach. For a punch that connects *only* at full extension, you have a similar problem. The body can’t go any further, so it’s about as damaging as grazing their cheek with your knuckles when they slip your jab. You’ve expended all your energy just getting there, and have no more momentum or impulse (physics terms) to give the target. A punch that connects before full extension lets you carry through the surface of the target. Your muscles can keep working to drive the punch deeper, and transfer the force into the opponent. A simple related idea would be having a knife or other stabbing implement in the hand: do you only stab 0.5 cm / ¼ inch deep with your 18 cm / 7 inch blade? If you want maximum damage, of course not-you drive the whole blade in there, or at least as much blade as you can / the target lets you. A more exaggerated but directly related example of Kevin’s explanation would be to look at how Kamaru Usman’s punch looked when he knocked out Jorge Masvidal. The fist and arm continue well past Masvidal’s jaw on that straight line, because that’s how punch mechanics work. Tense before impact and extend beyond the target, deal more damage without sacrificing speed.

Second your side stance is not correct wing chun and that torso rotation is ineffective. The knees are from where the legs derive power for forward momentum pushing the body as the punches are executed there is no movement of the upper torso

@@nintendonarutofan Everything? I'd have to go through and present the entire classical first lesson of the system, which does not cover everything about the punches. But by definition this is a first (punch) lesson so.... What I can say is that his stuff does not contain most of the classical elements of the system. In this case the position, energy explanation, horse, importance of travel/path vector, alignment, fist/wrist snap, clearing action, etc.... is mostly missing/different or not consistent with Ip's version if WCK which is actually what his lineage is if I'm not mistaken. Go look at the chisao stuff I commented on as well. I'm sure Steve is a nice guy but I don't agree with his admittedly revised "Wing Chun" .......

I will never understand why people waste their time on stuff like this, if you are practicing it for the art and exercise then I guess I understand but if you believe that this will work in a fight then #1 you have no idea what fighting is and #2 you will get hurt if you actually try this in a fight. What you see in the movies is not real, it is choreographed like a dance. If you want to see what a real fight looks like, watch an MMA match, that is what 2 real trained killers fighting looks like, these guys and girls are the highest trained fighters in the world today and you will never see them use chain punches. You can not generate any power with a chain punch, in order to generate power you have to have it travel from your feet up your legs and through your hips as you twist and then your shoulders, and then through your arms and fists, even a jab uses this same principle. There is no way to generate power with a chain punch. Chain punches are for video games and movies, not fighting. How many Kung Fu masters from China and around the world have to get the shit kicked out of them before people wake up? I believe Kung Fu was effective hundreds of years ago when everyone fought with weapons, there is no denying Kung Fu practitioners skills with weapons but with the advent of firearms these skill have become obsolete.
