Hearing the histroy behind your channel and your "teaching career" as a whole was truly amazing. There simply was a guy who liked to help people with their common interests and to make it more efficient, he started to make video lessons on youtube. This is literally the embodiment of what online communities are all about, helping each other to improve and I am really thankful that you took that step about ten years ago. Thank you for all those lessons, looking forward to everything that is yet to come

This is such a random thing but it was cool that we both have milestones the same years, and if I remember correctly we are the same age too. :) 2005 I graduated from an animal care school (in lack for a better translation), in 2007 I dipped my toes into learning Japanese for like a year or two, and in 2011 a friend introduced me to kpop and 2012 I moved to the US. I stubbornly considered myself an English learner up until I had lived here a few years and heard enough native speakers say I speak like a native speaker and through that I had to admit to myself that I rarely encounter new words anymore. I had to detach myself from the identity of being an English learner which I had been for 23 years (since 1996) and knew I wanted to still be a language learner for life and Japanese had felt too steep with the kanji. A random youtube video mentioned that Korean had the easiest writing system to learn and since I already liked kpop I figured it was a good choice because liking American music and TV had helped my English a ton. I typed in learn Hangul in youtube after that video and found yours so my Korean journey started with you. :)

I started in 2010 and all I knew of was going to Barnes and noble and buying a couple Korean books and watching k-pop. There was a Korean who went to my college who taught me some things. Recently I looked and saw I had bookmarked TTMIK in 2011 but I don’t remember using it back then. Crazy how today there are so many choices that it’s overwhelming.

I am very thankful that you decided to teach Korean, and make this channel. I am on a fixed income, and can't afford to take classes, so this channel helps me a lot. My reason for wanting to learn Korean in the first place is that around 2015 I started watching Korean Dramas, and it became one of my favorite things to do, I also love to read, and those are the two things I love to do to entertain myself the most. I am visually impaired, and I have to make yearly trips to see my ophthalmologist. Last year he told me that I am going to slowly lose what little vision I have. I decided that since that meant I would eventually have to give up one of my favorite things reading, I didn't want to lose the fun of my other favorite pastime. So I decided I would learn to understand the language. My reason for learning may seem kind of weird, but I'm going to do it. So once again thank you for this channel.

Hi Billy, I am a beginner at learning Korean. Earlier, I randomly saw your videos on KZbin when I searched for a particular lesson (Mainly your account and TTMK). Which I find very useful to recap what I learnt from class, help me to remember - understand better. Most importantly, I would like to let you know that your passion and love for teaching never get wasted and continuously making positive impacts to students around to world. Study nowadays is fun (Unlink my age, so analogue). Well keep it up, you make the world of learning easy, fun and almost free everywhere everytime.

Thank you for sharing your story, Billy! I initially started dabbling in Korean back in 2000 because I had started listening to Korean music in 1999 and wanted to be able to read along with the lyrics. I learned 한글 and lots of common words from songs. There really weren't resources back then! Sogang had an online course I did a bit of, and some Rosetta Stone. I had been interested in languages since I was little (English is my 2nd language) and I was also studying a bit of French and Italian around 2000. Then I ended up focusing on Japanese instead for a while. Around 2011-ish I did the first 2 levels of TTMIK and some time later I found How to Study Korean and Mango languages. I took another long break and restarted TTMIK from the beginning around 2016. I don't remember how many years ago I found your channel but your videos are super helpful and you are great at explaining concepts. I hope you can continue to teach Korean forever also!

I teach Korean on a platform called outschool that’s just for kids. I started with just how to read and o had so much fun so it was the motivator for me to work hard to get better myself and start a few grammar things too because students and parents enjoyed it so much they keep asking for more. But now I’m getting tired on working online. Not sure how long I can keep doing this format. It’d be fun if a school in person ever wanted to add Korean language. I used to be a classroom teacher and a trained ESL teacher so the teaching part was easy for me.

Thank you soo soo much for all that you do!! You're an amazing teacher and I'm thankful for people like you!😁 If you have time, I do have a question that I haven't seen answered anywhere. So you know how people can have accents when they speak, like Spanish for example. And if someone's native language isn't Spanish, they sound foreign when speaking and not just because of the mispronunciation, but because they just say the words like they would in English. So my question is, when speaking Korean, should we try to emulate the accent to pronounce everything better? I don't even know if this makes sense haha, but hopefully it does!
