The real problem is how programming is taught in universities. You're not alone and many people have the same issue. Sadly universities are stuck in their ways and refuse to change how they teach programming. Having grad students teach programming is completely wrong and not effective. To be a good teacher, you have to explain things in a way the students will understand and grad students generally don't have those skills.

@@TemiOlukoko Thanks I’m going to self teach a lot first to be 100% sure software engineering is what I wish to do. After looking around a lot I feel like it would be very difficult to get a software engineer job without a CS degree, nearly every entry level software engineering job asks for it. I’ll see how it goes I’m currently checking to see if I could complete a cs degree in 2 years instead of 4 years considering my current qualifications. I wouldn’t mind doing 2 years for a cs degree but I could not go back to uni for 4 years 😂
@TemiOlukoko
@TemiOlukoko 3 жыл бұрын
@@hellothere8812 I think CS degree requirements are heavily dependent on where you're located. For example, here in the UK we have a lot of entry level tech and SE jobs that don't require CS degrees (SE grad schemes, apprenticeships etc). Also, once you self teach, you could start taking on freelance projects as experience before applying to full time roles as a lot of companies value experience over degrees. I know a lot of SE's have taken that route and been successful but again this is all dependent on location! 😅

Don't bother with those conversion Masters in CS. I've been working in the computer industry for over 20 years and you almost never meet anyone with a degree in CS and never a Masters. It just isn't required. Most programmers in the industry seem to be self-taught, same with the computer engineers. How do you even know you'll like coding? Best to try something like Code Academy for an intense 3 month course, at least you'll only have spent about £50 for the privilege.

data structures and algorithms is the most important module in a CS degree, which is also why employers prefer employees with a CS degree. not saying that you cant learn it without one, but employers will always go with the safe route and pick CS graduates, which makes sense. plus most of these big companies have some software that looks at key words in your resume to screen ppl who dont have a relevant degree like CS. so although you can find a job as a software engineer without a CS degree, you will certainly find it harder to get the job compared to a CS graduate with a good grade, especially with how many people studying CS, it reduces your chances tremendously. just to clarify i dont find it fair, because i can imagine someone without a CS degree be a better coder than someone with one, this isnt unheard of but a CS graduate will always have the odds in their favour.
@maxpower7086
@maxpower7086 2 жыл бұрын
Don't think so. From experience the hiring team are interested in one thing....how well you can code. Can you solve the problems that they are working on. What Degree or grade is way down the list. I don't know where a lot of graduates think they'll be applying to, they imagine it'll be some large corporate where everyone is a grad and only the best will get in. I've been on that hiring team for small-medium companies and it's your skillset we're interested in, if you've got a degree then great but I have to say that a lot of grads fail the code tests. They just don't have the experience.
@TemiOlukoko
@TemiOlukoko 2 жыл бұрын
I can see your point but I have to disagree. I don't have a cs degree and i've been approached for swe roles at Microsoft, Amazon etc. Doing a CS degree will definitely help with your understanding of ds & algo but this is something you can learn yourself - I lhave indeed learnt it myself! I also think location is important. In the US I would imagine that companies still value cs grads over non cs grads but in the UK (where I am) very few companies require you to have one.

It depends on your situation, i.e. how much money are you willing to spend on uni/college or a bootcamp? Or would you rather go straight into the work force? The title of this video is misleading. It gives the impression that you have never coded before which if you watch the video isn't the case. You have experience in using two different programming languages in STEM subjects you studied at university. This alone will get you a job as a software developer straight out of university! I have a friend who did R during her Natural History degree. She graduated during the Pandemic and now works as a programmer using that same language.

Hi Temi, I really like your video it kinda opened my eyes to certain aspects for the journey to become Junior Dev, I'm currently on a Bootcamp with FireBrand I'm studying MTA Software Delopement Fundamentals 98-361 and MTA 98 -381( Introduction to Programming Using Python) they will also prepare me for a Job interview I am aware that if I get a job offer as junior dev I would have to go for a pay-cut, that's a sacrifice I would have to make then hopefully later I would start to earn more as time goes. May I ask you what should I learn after those ? Many thanks 😊

@@rudycarv2197 I am about to start my bootcamp next week. So does that mean bootcamp are pointless? Because you left this comment 8 months ago? And you still have to study more before finding work? What’s the point in bootcamp then? I’m still confused!

Hi Temi, Are you currently in employment, or perhaps working for yourself? I have an idea, well afew but 2 main ones. I am looking for a tech developer to put my ideas into action. I am unsure how to go about it. You are the first video I have come across involving tech eigineers in the UK. Would you possibly be interested in taking on projects

Depends best contracts for devs tend to top out at around £700/day. Best case as a perm up to £120k if you are in a lead/senior lead position.

There's a common misconception you need a computer science degree to be a software engineer. You clearly didn't watch the video as the whole point of it is that you don't need a degree to be a SWE.

Its like saying: How I became a Surgeon or a Civil Engineer without a Degree. Please, lets make a distinction between a Software Developer, and a Software Engineer. A Software Engineer is a protected title in countries like Canada and the US. To become a Software Engineer in Canada, you have to: 1. Earn a 4 year accredited BEng in Software Engineering. 2. Join a Professional Society. 3. Acquire 4 years of supervised experience. 4. Pass a Certification Exam. 4. And finally, be Licensed to practice as a PROFESSIONAL Software Engineer. What this means is that when I make a software update to a critical system, for e.g. a Rail Terminal Management Software System, I Endorse that update with my Official Stamp: So that in case my update screwed up, they come after me and screw me. Thats how serious it is to call yourself a Software Engineer. You are a Programmer(or a Software Developer at the very best).
